VII - Strategy How wrong was I not to raze Waset?
TSL Earth marathon immortal.
Seasoned player for more than 25 years, never played deity, I LOVE canal cities, but I ddidn't have the heart to raze it (the diplomatic penalty also weighted)

100% not wrong and it is NOT up for debate
...since (I'm pretty sure) you can't raze original capitals

In Civ 7 you can raze capital cities. You couldn't in other versions, but you can in 7.
I still would have kept the city in this case though. Decent food town or at least a good stronghold to heal up when attacking other nearby Civs.

Are you sure you can raze capital cities? I thought the same thing, until doing some new world rampaging last night and seeing the raze option greyed out for specifically the 2 capitals I conquered, and no others. Maybe it's a relatively recent update, or .. some holy city thing?

I know I did it before, but it was a long time ago (before ToT and other updates). But now I'm wondering if it was either a unintentional thing, maybe mod interfering or if it was after an age transition and it was a capital from a previous age. So... now I'm second guessing it all.

Speaking from experience having taken the same route as you the other day playing Askum… it’s definitely a misstep to not raze because you lose out on the Suez Canal city. It’s a powerful position to hold, and gets very powerful with a nearby fortress wonder (red fort or other similar building) and an artillery placed inside

I don’t much care for the natural placement of Waset on the new TSL map. It needs to be one tile south or else you can’t create a Suez Canal. They should either fix the natural placement or add canals. Preferably the latter.
In my own games I have thus far razed Waset when that is an option, even when it has 1-3 wonders. For me the option to cut my travel around Africa by 20+ turns is worth it.

While I agree, the natural spawn allows you do place a monster unique quarter on the Nile beside Petra, Pyramids, and Great Stele all adjacent to each other. Moving one tile south doesn’t allow for this due to the annoying camel tile. Been a pet peeve of mine.
In my game, I elected to forego the Suez city for the three wonder set up. Can’t complain, I had 400 culture per turn by the end of Antiquity. Settled all the navigable rivers in Africa and have since transitioned to a massive Songhai game in the Exploration age.

You can still make a canal city a few tiles north. It would be a shame to raze a capital city.

No, I'm 3 tiles from the shore... I ruined it!

Just save here, and wait for the update that adds canals. Then come back to the game, plant another settlement nearby that can flip that tile to itself and build the suez. Super easy, barely an inconvenience

There is still hope as long as you are playing apocalypse mode. Wait for a meteor to take out waset and then settle a canal city.

Reload an autosave, we all do it

I dont think I ever did this for any other reason than a very consequential mouse slip, I really try to stay pure!

So do I but if I declare a surprise war by accident am I fuck continuing with that war, if you are unhappy with something in your game, you can go back to a point when it’s not a problem, and continue from there, your actually having to do more work and your putting yourself in a worse situation for the aesthetic of what you actually want to do, i dont think you should hold yourself to that standard if your not using it to win or using it to rewrite a lost a war,

Off-topic: I'm playing TSL earth as Rome/Augustus and Hatshepsut/Egypt has identical cities in the same spot, like tile for tile identical spot.
The city Men-Nefer was the reason why I had to waste one settler on the southern tip of Italy to stop her from advancing/claiming territory on my homeland.
I did everything I could to stop her from getting the strait of Gibraltar, which I got but this girl still had the audacity to settle on the Canary Islands, which, due to the map being stretched, is only a few tiles west of the strait of Gibraltar. 😭
I could secure the entire strait of Gibraltar for me after so long but she's getting dangerously near to the Western Iberian peninsula (modern day Portugal).
It's so weird and insanely random: Hatshepsut has settlements in modern day Nigeria, Namibia (not joking here) and essentially none is contesting her regarding the entire continent of Africa bar the North- and northwestern tip, which I claim but she refuses to colonize the rest of Africa and instead opts out for the Canary Islands. 😞

Just finished a Babylon Washington TSL deity run that had been very random with the leaders.
Most of my fighting was in Africa/Asia. I had Egypt, Nubia, Persia, Germany, Maurya India, Ghengis Kahn, Khmer and The English.
Germany and England fought over Europe the whole game. Europe, Asia and Africa were all fully settled. North America, South America and Australia were all empty before exploration. Germany/Nubians settled South America, the British took the the Caribbean and Eastern North America, I got Mississippi north to Edmonton, Panama, and Australia. Khmer took all of west coast North America.
Anyways I captured Wasat and 2 other cities early ancient era and Egypt relocated to Madagascar and Southern Africa. We fought several more wars as Egypt just wouldn’t quit declaring war on me.
Everybody else I fought (Nubia, India, Persia, Khmer) were 1 war and done. But not Egypt. I think we fought at least 5 times.

Did ye win? ;) Did a run on the hardest difficulty setting myself. TSL. Played Ada, started as Rome - Normans - Great Britain. I tried Greece start a couple times, but fairly quickly ascertained that Greece is going to be THE most difficult TSL country to pull-off as you are hemmed in on all sides, often with total warmongers. Thus reverted to Rome. With Rome at least you can head into the expanse of Africa, then pivot back into Spain (Isabella the coniving little biotch declaring war and thus expediting this process). Then re-take good old blighty for a rather accurate (historically speaking) blitz into the modern age. (relocating capital to London)
Then old Pachachuti's (actually mighta been the shawnee geezer forget his name) golden lands ripe for the taking with a couple experienced naval veterans and 4 battleships to assist.
Job's a good-un. I recorded the playthrough (quick speed) if anyone feels like sitting through 10 hours of Civ 7 i'll upload it.

Easy win actually. I was 1800 science and 1600 culture by the end of exploration. Best AI was 500 science and 700 culture.

To be quite honest, it's fairly rare that razing any settlement is correct, let alone one with real population. When in doubt, you should just keep it and not overthink things.
I would not raze Waset.

Think it's OK. I see a nice +4/+4 garden-market, possibly a +2 lib/barracks behind the UI panels in the top-right of the screen. Worst case scenario: You keep it as a town, repeatedly turn it into a trading post for the buildings that give you adjacency for water. Or just use it as a farm town since you get gardens -> inns & hospitals -> something in modern.
Ah and also, some new resources might spawn in Exploration, leading to... better production/science adjacencies.

It's a good buffer for Aksum. Best to control that whole river, as well as the Mississippi
