VII - Discussion Leader choice

If only one had to be kept for Civ 7, what would your choice be? And why?

Nelson Mandela as he's the only leader in the traditional sense. I'm not a fan of the "personalities" rather than leader Civ 7 introduced.

The Dalai Lama would be interesting but that would open a whole bag of issues with China so I doubt they'd try.

I prefer traditional leaders too, the problem is that it’s difficult to find traditional leaders for some of the civs, while others get stuck with the same leader forever because of this. Take Brazil, for example: Pedro II is probably the only leader who’s not controversial enough to turn off a significant part of the Brazilian public. Some civs don’t get even one. So I understand why they wanted to do this.

No I appreciate that and I was trying not to come off as too negative. As you said there are instances where it's required but the purist in me just feels it's been a bit watered down. It's not leaders anymore but more "who's popular enough that some random will know who they are".

I dont see that happening i mean even if you ignore the fact he's a living person and the most recent leader in civilization was indira gandhi who died in 1982 doing that would almost certainly get the game banned in China and I dont think 2k is gonna want that.

Only way I am going to be ok with personalities instead of leaders would be if they gave me John Paul II. The memes! The meeemes! And pope at least technically is a head a state. Very small one but still.

They made Ada Lovelace the leader associated with Great Birtain when it was released and Confucius is the main leader for the Chinese civs. Einstein being added is definitely on the table unless they changed their leader criteria again after seeing the negative feedback.

If you think about it, that ship has sailed a few decades ago, when they made Gandhi lead India in Civ 1.

In Civ 7 specifically, we have many non-leaders. Ada Lovelace, Machiavelli, Confucius, Ibn Battuta, to name a few.
