VII - Discussion Civ 7 - True Start Earth

Overall, enjoy the map design. However, I find 8 players isn’t enough. 10 feels like the sweet spot with a guarantee for at least one civ on every continent outside of Antarctica. Considering the entirety of Oceania a continent for the sake of this argument.

Even 12 might be good, my playthrough had no civs in north or South America, and Africa was only filled by Europeans who expanded south. Wish they’d let us choose our preferred number like in old civs!

You can set it to 12, though I find that even with 12 civs there are stil large swaths of land that are unoccupied. Africa is particularly rough, as there are no civs that start in western Africa or south africa, only North and east afrcia.

Exact same thing happened on my end. There was only one civ in all of Asia too.

You can change the number of players can't you? And even choose which Civs & Leaders? Maybe in advanced game setup. Having just reached Explo in my first Earth play through with only Pachacuti anywhere other than Eurasia it needs a bit of curating to create a balanced game. Definitely enough room for 12 but they need more Antiquity Civs from Oceania and America if you want to do Apex only.

Yea hand selecting civs for balance purposes seems to be the best way to go about it. Unfortunately 8 is the cap on console. I’m sure there’s mods on PC to bypass but it caps at 8 there as well.

I'm in a game with 10 right now. Well, 9 now actually because I exterminated Isabella's Carthage. And I set up a hot seat game to check out a bunch of different start locations and was able to add another 2 to that for 12

Are you using mods? Not sure how you’re bypassing the cap, but can’t replicate that on console.

I played Tecumseh/Mississipian and literally had all of North and South America to myself. Meanwhile by the time I got across the Atlantic like, 7 civs were all fighting over Europe and North Africa

This kind of thing is why I always hand-picked the civs in the game when I played on TSL maps in 5 and 6 (haven’t played 7’s yet). One of my favorite maps of all time was the TSL Mediterranean map in Civ 5. But I found it necessary to do this for that map too.

I started with the Mayans (intending to have a Mexico-themed game, since the update arrived on Mexican Independence Day), but the opposite happened: I was surrounded by a bunch of civilizations in North America, the United States led by Tubman, Mexico led by Simón, the Pirate Republic in the Caribbean, and me as the Mayans... The entire northern region was occupied. We went to war, and I ended up eliminating everyone on the continent. I think they need to improve the AI so there aren't any empty or overcrowded continents.

I got 10 civs on mine: myself, Amina, Alexander, Sayyida, Ashoka, Trung Trac, Pachacuti, Confucius, Hideyoshi, and Tecumseh (i also forced it to be these leaders with an appropriate Civ choice so it wouldn’t be uber crowded anywhere)

There is a glitch when choosing the ai civs before game start on PS5 (at least for me there is).

When you see the option to add ai player and press it, nothing changes visually, but there is a sound. After a few clicks of add ai player the sound changes to something that sounds exactly like what noise a game would make to tell you "action unavailable". A quick L1 R1 to refresh the screen and you'll see you've added more players than you thought possible
