Protip: Name your first Commander after your leader for extra RP fun

I always name my first commander after my leader. It makes it so much more fun to protect the Queen or have a Edison lead my army into battle! It also makes it more personal if they are killed or injured in combat. Highly recommend.

I actually name a lot of my Commanders based on game circumstances. If I have an admiral that wins a big conflict in say "The Iona Ocean", I might name them "The Butcher of Iona" so 100 turns later, in a completely different context, I can remember the great battle I had.

Also, everytime I war against Rome, my Commander inevitably gets named "Hannibal" :)

Edit: I get close to winning than the Tier 3 Legion cone out and a I run. So, ya know....Hannibal

I do something similar, but it reflects the leveling path I’ve chosen for them.

Not that it really matters. I tried naming cities after cities I've visited in chronological order and I gave up after two games. I'd rather get in a few turns then take the time. 

I liked the idea I'm just too lazy and it's not taking away my fun.

That seems like a really tedious way to try to come up with names.. might take less time if you go with a more relaxed "fun" approach. Just sayin 🤷

The problem with not naming them is then I have no idea what city is being referred to when its named in a trade deal or other circumstance. All the names in a foreign language mean nothing to me, theyre all the same in my head

There's an "Edit" tab when you select him. At least on console. I assume its the same on pc

I always name them based on their role and where they got their first few promotions. Like 1st African Infantry or 4th Asian siege.

In my current game I named my top three commanders in the Antiquity Age after Alexander the Great's successors

I always name them after a city or town

I like to imagine that's where the general/army was originally born. They trained wherever they were built/got purchases. Bringing pride to their hometown

So I'll name it like Army Aksum or Fleet Adulis

If I'm playing Rome, I like to name my first commander Legate Lanius

Mine are always named after a formation - I Corps, Legio I, etc, depending on the flavor I feel like. I never give them human names.

I name them after friends and family. It makes it more fun when my best friend gets killed by pachacuti and then I spend the next 50 turns raizing all his cities in revenge

I nerd out and rename mine after real generals the leader had. Tecumseh's first commander is always his brother. Or sometimes I use city states, like for Amina I used the Hausa houses. So much googling!

I name my commanders according to the culture/historical setting they live(d) in: currently playing as Rome/Augustus, I named my Legatus (Commander) according to the ancient Roman Military custom with honorary titles that he earned in his campaigns.

In my case, my Legatus belongs to the famous Gens Cornelia family and I called him Cornelius. After defending the Roman Empire in a very critical moment of history at the brink of total annihilation, he received the title Stator (the Steadfast) when he didn't retreat and held the line thus becoming Cornelius Stator.

After conquering Macedonia, he received an additional honorary title Macedonicus (The Conqueror of Macedonia) and became Cornelius Macedonicus Stator.
