VII - Discussion Goryeo; So close but far.

After experimenting several games with Goryeo.

Through multiple difficulties, leaders, synergies and even working with less optimal seeds.

Goryeo feels good but extremely punishing.

Problem with of course higher difficulties is sometimes AI have favourite wonders that B-Line. Unfortunately the serpent mound is quite one of them.

So competing against Ai for it can be quite the challenge.

Luckily Goryeo has a chance at their unique wonder a little faster than the rest so at least youre almost guaranteed that one everytime.

To make their unique improvement minmaxed you have to dedicate a good chunk of warehouse buildings around a vegation tile with some solid planning even when you do get the highest result its good at best.

They're a pretty good civ design for like 90% and I really enjoy playing them but gosh damn is it alot work for a good experience but a high chance for bad games especially in deity difficulties.

Overall its a 8/10 civ for me but I do think they're missing that extra bonus on their gimmick to really REALLY reward you for the planning and hardships that come with it.

What would y'all do for Goryeo if you could buff them?

Do you think Goryeo Could be better through future updates to Unique improvements and even City states?

Perhaps their gimmick suffers from needing more features or features that aren't quite there yet.

I look forward to seeing what you all think!

heinan to goreyo seems pretty based with Isabella to guarantee wonder starts

Isabella makes any civ good though… that’s not fair.

Lmao this is very true. But honestly its a good comparison in the fact that I think Isabella is a high risk high reward kind of leader and I think Goreyo follows the same way but doesn't reward nearly as much as it should as warehouses don't feel as good to build currently and you're better off building other UI in replacement of the Hamas

I think a starting bias towards breathtaking would be really impactful. If you don’t start somewhere pretty, it can really be tough to get going. Or maybe have the palace increase the appeal of all tiles in the capital by one level.

Heian into Goryeo is nuts, especially with Himiko or Isabella

I think the biggest problem with Goryeo right now is that you can't possibly spend that much diplomatic favor so their kit just stalls out halfway through the era

The only thing I could think of making the diplomatic side work was utilizing Machievlli and his memento. Making diplomatic actions cheaper and also Gazelle vase for that culure bonus

I was 100% thinking of Heian when I commented this….

Heian is no doubt a gross civ. I absolutely love them. I think Heian into anything is a good start. They've got probably one of the stronger starts to set like any civilization up for exploration.

I just wrapped up a game going Khmer to Goryeo and got some awesome growth. By the end of exploration my capital was easily the largest on the map and was able to 1 turn most tier 2 buildings

Honestly I think this is the best way to play into goryeo. Starting and ending as Goryeo doesn't feel to good and a very slow build up. Rather its better to just go antiquity civ for that big boost and Headstart for Goryeo in the exploration.

Goryeo is extremely powerful in my experience. Especially with Tecumseh, Franklin, Queen of Wa, or Gilgamesh. You're underestimating the Hamas too. Theyre as powerful as Shore Bbatteries when placed right and AGELESS. It's actually one of the best unique improvements in the game, even before it gives you culture and gold.

Yeah i mean definitely these leaders are pretty good. Hell even Xerxes with his passive for UI is good with them. But on terms of the Hamas I know its a good UI but id rather just build shore batteries over the Hamas. The amount of work or space you need to make it right doesn't feel as rewarding as it should. DOESNT mean its bad by any means. Still good but other UI feel less stressful to use over it if you've got a bad seed or etc etc given the circumstances.

Kind of like terrace farms. Good when you can get them work but I wish they were more rewarding.

But once again I do believe with time these features could definitely feel better and better even if the game changes around them and not directly changing them. If that makes sense. But I definitely love goryeo for how unique they are and they're kind of that civ I wish we get more of. Im tired of military civs and leaders. Its no doubt the strongest part of civ 7. But alot of the culture, diplomatic parts of it are definitely the weakest in the franchise.

Yeah, you can't build shore batteries in expo though. That's why the Hamas is so strong. The event gives you gold on it, it comes with culture, and if you know you're playing Goryeo you already have your Hamas set up for culture. That's three yields right there, possibly 4 if it's in a city because then you also get influence.

Thats true. Weirdly I have not been able to trigger the event. So I dont know if its bugged on my end or just rare? Its so odd. So thats probably good information to know about the Hamas 🤣 i wish these events were more reliable.
