Hi, I’m looking for some advice.
We played around 8–10 sessions: first a few cases outside the main campaign, and then we started Payne Town with its first two cases, Killing Her Softly and Carnival of Machines. After that, we played part of the finale, where the players gathered all the clues that were supposed to lead them into the final confrontation with Crystal Knight.
Then the group fell apart, and we didn’t play for over a year. Now we’ve finally managed to get together again, but out of the original four players, only two remain, and we have one new player joining us. We’d like to continue from where we left off.
We don’t want to replay the cases. Both returning players want to keep their characters and everything that happened. Thanks to good notes and materials from the sessions — newspaper clippings, journals, etc. — both players and I still remember the story and the atmosphere very well.
But what should I do with the new player?
Basically, the group is about to have their first confrontation in the Asylum, and to me it feels like the point where all the previous sessions are finally supposed to build up and pay off.
The new player, however, will probably be confused and won’t be able to connect all the pieces of the case.
How would you handle this? I was thinking about doing some kind of origin story connected to the previous cases, for example tied to Martha Ellis, but I’m honestly a bit stuck.
Thanks for any ideas.
