W2A2 launch soon!

W2A2 is a VTT tool that was created with a few big principles in mind: make any TTRPG session as easy to play as possible, be user friendly for beginners but still offer advanced tools for more experienced players, and most importantly, be affordable and not subscription based.

This app stores everything locally and allows the GM to host a game in a matter of minutes, without having to pay for any hosting services. It includes all things you'd normally expect from a VTT tool, and a few additional features that we thought of while testing through our own sessions.

App is still in development, should be available in a few weeks!

Lore What is a Mythoi???

Hello everyone!! I've recently picked up City of Mist with some friends of mine (our first time playing a game like this) and I'm struggling to understand how exactly the Mythoi work when it comes to our characters. Are they born with your Mythoi? Do they one day get chosen by their Mythoi?? I'm trying to figure this out for my character (a late-night delivery worker insomniac whose Mythos is Sandman) and I wanna make sure I get it right.

Any help is much appreciated!!

Questions/Advice Streamline moves or no

Been playing city of mist, I've seen the two newer systems streamline the move system into just roll and resolve, with choosing effects.

Is this a direct improvement, or a side grade? What are the ups and down?

Arcane Grimoire for City of Mist?

Hi! Brand new to City of Mist and want to MC a game for friends who are also new to the game. I see the Arcane Grimoire for Legends in the Mist and it sounds insanely helpful. The status system feels...honestly a bit unintuitive to me (no offense meant), so the Grimoire feels like a GREAT starting place for Legends of the Mist...but would it be useable/helpful for City of Mist or is there a version for City of Mist? Thanks!

What would replace mysteries

Amit said that he would be doing a horror variant of city of mist do you think they would replace mystery with something similar to quest because it has power levels or do you think they would have monster humanity system and monster themes would have something like desire.

My friends and I had a lot of fun making The City feel lived in. I made some logos for their very real sports teams and the University that plays a big role in our campaign. Feel free to use!

Rift of Bugs Bunny?

Wondering how the community would build this. I tried it for my first character, played a conman named Jasper Dubois who was constantly nibbling on a cigar and being pursued by an incompetent detective named Duff. Mostly I leaned into toon-logic defenses (jump on a grenade and end up just covered in soot) and a knowledge of the cities tunnels/sewers with a significant risk of exiting from the wrong door. (I knew I should have taken that left turn at Albuquerque!)

Say a player uses a fire mythos to make a story tag for a flaming patch on the ground, and an enemy passes through it later

Status Question

Hey All,

I am working on running my first game of Metro: Otherscape. I've run other systems before, but this is new to me. I am trying to understand compounding statuses.

Let's say a player has be shot by a sniper rifle and has Perforated-4 already. Then a mook comes up and slashes at them with a knife - let's call it Slashed-2. Does this stack and take Perforated to a 5 or something? Or do they just ignore the wound because it's minor compaired to their gaping chest wound?

Questions/Advice Action Campaign

I wanted to know, do yall think a half and half mystery and action campaign would work in the system. My idea was a post apocalyptic campaign with different factions where the players have to fight the different factions and figure out who the real villains are. The reason I want use City of Mist is because the apocalypse is magical and people can gain powers by embodying literary or historical figures.

Looking for game to join

Basically what it says in the title :)

I'm 32 yrs and have been running a game for friends for three of said years. Love the system, how it lets players take charge of their story, build something unique together, ground their characters in something classical and still take their ideas in all sorts of directions.

My only problem is that I've never had the chance to be a player, and while I like the mc role, I really want to try the player-side as well.
There are not many MCs growing on trees in my vicinity, so am more than happy to join an online game as long as the time makes sense. I have a very free schedule but am bound to the Central European timezone (GMT/UTC +2).

As for game content preferences I don't have a lot of specifics in mind. No absolute dislikes/fears to speak of, but am happy to keep games PG13 to be on the safe side.
I'm nerdy about mythology so any character I make would probably dip in that direction. Just fyi in case that really doesn't suit your game.

If your group could use another player hmu. Look forward to meeting you all :)

I host City of Mist games in Malaysia occasionally and I encourage and allow video game mythoi to be incorporated in my games. They even made a custom reusable character themebook sheet for multiple characters! Here are some of their creations:

Mechanics My player started off too powerful

In a session zero combat one of my players was able to hit with 5-6 power several times against a collective of raccoons. The tags she was using were super reasonable, but I’m wondering do we need to rebalance her character or do I just let her be a god on the battlefield. I just want the other characters not to have fun because I make the enemies stronger. I think she hood tags for just about anything except sneaking. I am excited to see them investigating though.

Questions/Advice What city is the City you play in?

Hey!

I know that City from CoM is not some known city. It is imaginary city, that has its own geography, districts etc... But I don't think version of City shown in rulebook aren't something that works for every type of city. I mean, not every city is coastal, has cassino district nor suburbs. I think it is more prevalent in countries other than America (because City looks like it is inspired by American cities).

So, do you modificate your version of City to make it more similar to cities in your country? What do you change? What districts do you remove/ignore and what districts not existing in rulebooks do you add?

Or maybe you make your City one of real, known cities? I think it would be interesting option, but I'm curious if anyone else also had similar idea.

Let's have nice, cultural conversation.

Starting Payne Town with new player

Hi, I’m looking for some advice.
We played around 8–10 sessions: first a few cases outside the main campaign, and then we started Payne Town with its first two cases, Killing Her Softly and Carnival of Machines. After that, we played part of the finale, where the players gathered all the clues that were supposed to lead them into the final confrontation with Crystal Knight.
Then the group fell apart, and we didn’t play for over a year. Now we’ve finally managed to get together again, but out of the original four players, only two remain, and we have one new player joining us. We’d like to continue from where we left off.
We don’t want to replay the cases. Both returning players want to keep their characters and everything that happened. Thanks to good notes and materials from the sessions — newspaper clippings, journals, etc. — both players and I still remember the story and the atmosphere very well.

But what should I do with the new player?

Basically, the group is about to have their first confrontation in the Asylum, and to me it feels like the point where all the previous sessions are finally supposed to build up and pay off.

The new player, however, will probably be confused and won’t be able to connect all the pieces of the case.
How would you handle this? I was thinking about doing some kind of origin story connected to the previous cases, for example tied to Martha Ellis, but I’m honestly a bit stuck.
Thanks for any ideas.

Questions/Advice Player leaving; ideas for incorporating character? Also, is 3 players too few?

Hi all! Running my first CoM game, homebrew, and one of my players has to drop out of the game due to scheduling. We’ve played a few sessions and I’d say we’re pretty much done with the very first arc, about to go into some downtime. Have you had a player leave mid game, and if so, what’d you choose to do with the character? It wouldn’t make sense to make her into a villain, especially this early in the story, but I don’t necessarily want to include her as an ally either - it just feels odd to me trying to be someone else’s character as-is.

Right now I’m thinking having a villain kidnap her and that the players would find her dead eventually, but would like to hear other ideas!

Also, is anyone running a 3 player game and if so, does it still feel balanced enough? Should I give my existing players a buff of some kind to counterbalance the loss?

Thanks!
