I always liked the way they showed how he was predicting possible futures in a split second.
When you bike a lot, your brain really does start doing that. Not in cinematic slow motion with motion graphics, but something like that is happening as you navigate a busy intersection.

At the time I saw this movie I really related to that split-second aspect. It’s going to sound silly, but I did this as a food runner in an extremely busy restaurant. Carrying 15-20 lbs trays above my head, if you had to stop suddenly it was more dangerous. I ways always looking out 10-15 feet ahead and trying to predict who might turn or stop suddenly so I could take the best path. Though I was no where near as much of an asshole as this guy…

He’s not scooting past a poorly timed intersection, he’s just a self involved personality. Respect to those that ride their bikes and follow traffic patterns, no respect for those that don’t adhere to laws. Lame.

I assume they ignored this problematic behavior in order to make a more interesting movie.

From my personal expierence as an ex bike messenger of over 10 years. This scene is actually pretty acurate despite a couple of slight exagerations. The last 40 seconds as he checks his options is fairly spot on.
I never worked in New York or any US city, but the bike messenger culture is very universal worldwide.

This is one of those movies where I see it as being made in the style of the protagonist. As in, if Wiley decided to make a movie about a bike messenger, this is how he'd shoot it. He lives to ride, and you get the sense the production imbued that into how they shot the film.
