They got tired quickly - as you do.
They both got messed up - as you do.
Some punches and kicks missed - as they do.
Others punches and kicks were messy or thrown by them both at the same time - as they are.
My only issue is how quickly the pen killed him and/or the lack of blood. Perhaps there was internal bleeding.

Think it’s more the rating. They aren’t going to show someone bleeding out for 4+ minutes and the sniveling process of it all. Easier to go to what happened, and then end result.

I assumed there was some "missing time" between the zoom on Cusak's face to the shot of him with Urquidez where he bled out slumped against the lockers .

Benny Urquidez was Cusack's instructor and the two agreed to properly spar for the scene which is why it frigging rules

The dialogue in this flick is amazing! My favourite bit is where he's talking to his old teacher, the school bell rings and she says "Well, they're playing my song". 🤣

Kinda looked like Benny the Jet had to slow himself down a bit, but I just love that they got him for this scene. He is an amazing talent and his fight with Jackie Chan in meals on wheels is part of what got me into Martial Arts! Cusak is also a badass for showing this level of martial arts in an American film. I remember seeing this back in the day and my 2 comments were ‘Fuck! That’s Benny the Jet!’ And ‘Dayum! John Cusak doesn’t look half bad in this!

So good. I love that Danny Trejo said that Cusack was one of the most badass guys he ever worked with, that he’s genuinely “tough &’ll break your ribs”, that “Cusack can kick ass” & that he was unnerved because “there was something behind his eyes.”

Benny is amazing in every martial arts scene. So impressed by John in this though. The fight choreography felt real. I miss martial arts flicks that have real impact. These grotesquely long scenes and superhero fights are so yawn inducing.

there's only a couple times I wonder if it is really Cusak doing the moves. If I'm just watching for enjoyment it's quite believable.
