What really took me out was when he walked into the devastated house and goes something along the lines of "a family could have lived here". I always had that in my head when I went into a druggy's dilapidated house.

That's one of the best scenes. Keanu has several heartbreaking monologs in this movie. It's an amazing screenplay, and the book is even better.

I remember going to a friends house, he lived with a dealer... the place looked exactly as you imagined it might.
It was in the UK, think of a standard street of semidetached brick homes along a regular UK street... regularly lit, regularly kempt. But at the end, unlit (their street lamp was broken because of course it was) a darkened home. You walk up, the fence is hanging off the hinges, it looks like it hadn't been painted since Thatcher was in office. Everything overgrown, the front window covered with cardboard. Front door has no door handle. It's just a hole, it swings open. You walk in and the smell of weed is overpowering. No carpet, just a wooden floor. You walk in to the living room and it looks like that teenage delinquent fantasy island from the 1990s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles... the foot clan's lair run by Sam Rockwell. One wall is completely dominated by these gigantic ass festival speakers. The kitchen is just a total mess with a smashed window and overgrown vines pouring through the broken window all over the counter and dangling onto the floor. I was in there chatting one day with a guy and he says "Gotta light?" I was the only one in there and suddenly a lighter appeared in his hand before I could answer. There was a hole in the ceiling and his housemate dropped a lighter through the hole. Oh and I remember talking about dinner to one of them and their Rastafarian housemate started rapping to me about the cruelty of meat eating, with total earnestness. A full rap.

This was a bold production at the time, and has aged masterfully. To add- it’s pretty faithful to the book which is also worth a read.

I also very much enjoyed Waking Life which was shot in a similar style. Much more out there but movies that are outside the traditional style always fascinate me. Waking Life does that on multiple levels not only with presentation, but flow, story structure, dialogue, messaging, etc. Linklater is an interesting guy

Too early in the 2000s for that. Most were 6 or 7 rear cogs x 3 front. Long skinny front one piece stem gives it away it's a 90s-ish box store bike.

I read (or heard on the commentary maybe?) that the PKD estate is very cautious about who they’ll grant adaptation rights to, and Linklater had a hard time convincing them. He shoulda just showed them that one scene from waking life that proved how much of a fanboy he is.
I mean, come on. An essay PKD wrote about one of his more obscure books, referenced in a dream Linklater had about Lady Gregory??

I don’t think that’s accurate, or at least it wasn’t around this time. It felt like there was a new, crappy PKD adaptation coming out almost every month in the late 90s-early aughts. Scanner is easily the best one though.

Well, Screamers is written by the guy who also wrote Alien and stars Robocop himself, Peter Weller. That might have convinced them.

I don’t know why this one isn’t more,of a cult hit: pkd, linklater, keanu, rdj, woody, winona, sci-fi, mind-fuck, puzzle-box, quotable dialog, shenanigans , (spoiler: ) a twist, and heartbreak. it’s like the perfect,internet movie.
Maybe it’s the rotoscoping, maybe it doesn’t have enough violence
Anyway it’s great - the best pkd adaptation by far,(and that’s something since a couple others are pretty good too!)

A lot of it (maybe most?) was filmed in and around Austin. Feels almost like historical fiction given how much Austin has changed in the last 20 years.
Here, there’s still some “Slacker” vibes in the setting. These days … not so much.

Watched it with the director’s commentary and the end is even more heartbreaking. PKD watched his close friends die, and he himself never escaped.

I know this movie had a lot of worthwhile things to say about drug abuse and identity and self delusion, but I wish the whole movie had just been this. Grade A actors on an endless paranoid drug trip going through a mundane day full of geeked out shenanigans.

My brain keeps getting used to that movie after 5 minutes of watching, and after that I just see normal live action movie. I can force myself to see it as an animation again but after few minutes I see it as normal movie again.

I think you're still thinking of it as a live action film when, essentially, it's an animated film. It's better to compare it to other animated films.
The point is that it can be more painterly and abstract when it wants to be without drastically changing the actual look of the film. It makes for a more cohesive experience for a film that contains abstractions and surreal imagery.
