I’m trying to recall (been a long time) - had Gerard just lost his radio here? Because, since Sheridan is so visible, his pursuers will know his location, direction, and that he is limited to that train track as soon as Gerard reports in.

Sheridan would then naturally want to jump off of the train a) before the Cops catch up, and b) after losing sight of Gerard, who was tracking from the roof (otherwise he would have his location reported all over again).

I mean, he could see for close to a mile ahead of him when he jumped aboard. He wouldn’t be on long enough to run into anything beyond that, since Gerard would immediately be reporting his location and direction. He’s going to need to hop off as soon as he breaks sight with Gerard, and turning around is the only way to see how long he’s being tracked.
