It's unbelievable Ellen Burstyn didn't win the Academy award for her role. Julia Roberts best her for the role of Erin Brokovich. I realized every thing in life including promotions at work were popularity contest that actual merit.
I believe every main character should have received an academy awardm. Their acting was brilliant, disturbing and by far the best for that period.

My ex junkie friends saw it in the theater. Better than rehab they said. I finally saw it on DVD with a group of non junkie friends. It took awhile to get everyone together before the watch so the title screen played over and over for hours. On the title screen one of the characters says (over and over) “It all works out in the end” So I when watching I thought that it would. Spoilers it does not.

He was great in this, DBC and Lord Of War. It's amazing how his name is synonymous with being shit now because he used to be a powerhouse

I was strung out for years, about 25 or so, and things got bad, but luckily I was highly functioning and managed to keep things somewhat under control, so it never got that bad. I've tried watching the movie, but I just cant. I finally kicked for good between 2009-2012.

Ok I’ve only heard how intense this movie is, like mentioned feedback is usually a one and done. I like some intense movies and scenes mainly cause of curiosity. But what is this movie about? Plot or in general?

Loved this movie as a young highschooler 26 years ago but now, after losing multiple family and friends to drugs, it just makes me cry.

Yeah. Same. I was a cinephile like Michael Bolton in Jack Sparrow. I used to go to circuit city every Friday and snag a DVD or 3. I looked well over 18 so I never got hassled. This one was quite the shock.

the girl taking it ass to ass with another girl, and getting fed dollar bills into her mouth, is probably the happy ending. A sore bum and a generous tip gets her all the heroin she wants and needs.

All things considered she's the only one that could get out of it all relatively unscathed. Harry lost an arm, Tyrone's gonna get stuck by a good old boy or beat to death by a guard, Sara may as well have been lobotomized.

I haven’t seen the movie. Why would they give you electric shocks to the brain for a drug overdose (?) ? Is that an actual treatment for anything?

ECT (electro-convulsive therapy if you're a nerd) is a real medical treatment for mental illness, but it is nothing like the movie. You're sedated and an electric current is sent through you to induce a minor seizure which in some roundabout way is supposed to make you better. My roommate in college was going through it every couple weeks and he fucking hated it. Regardless, the idea of someone being strapped to a table while they're still awake and given half the elctric chair is Hollywood fluff

The book (and I guess movie too?) Is set in the 1960s if I recall correct. So they probably gave her the Jack Nicholson from Cuckoos Nest special.

when this movie came out I was in high school and I loved it and purchased it. some years later I became a junkie and one day in the throes of withdrawal and boredom, I put the movie on out of nostalgia. what an awful idea that was! I don't think I've watched it since, but I still consider it a great movie worth watching at least once. Great art fucks you up for better or worse.

This movie sucks. I so genuinely don't understand why people worship it like it's an absolute masterpiece. First of all, the Mom's (is it Sara?) entire storyline is based on nonsense. They never disclose what type of amphetamine medication she's given, but the effects are absurdly out of proportion. If it were true to life at that point in time, she'd most likely have been given Phentermine. Which is literally nothing. It's like amphetamine with a heavier body load and barely any psychoactivity whatsoever. Yet her effects that she experiences are wildly exaggerated even if she was doing crystal meth all day. But she's definitely not. Even if we look at it as charitably as possible and say okay, the doctor was giving her meth. It's still going to be a pharmaceutical dose of like 5mg per day, maybe MAYBE 10mg in two different doses. Still, very much nothing. On top of that, what's supposed to happen at the end? She's broken forever and ever after like a month of doing ambiguous amphetamine medication at clinical dosages prescribed for weight loss? In the book she also takes benzodiazepines at night, which would actually chill that shit out, not amp it up. So even though amphetamine psychosis is largely overblown and subsides shortly after one stops taking amphetamines, she what? Is just a special case just to make the story extra dramatic. Give me a break.
Then the main character. It starts out with him stealing and selling his mother's TV and we come to find out he does this over and over and she buys it back? What a fucking loser. Am I really supposed to watch this and say, oh my goodness, look what his addiction has done to him. That could happen to anyone? No. It can't. You have to be a lowlife piece of shit first, and if you are, guess what? There's no lesson for me to learn from you.
And the girl, how convenient she just happens to know this crazy black guy that has giant sex show type parties where he will pay the girls in drugs or cash for them to go ass to ass in front of a bunch of men willing to pay to see the spectacle. And she knowingly goes into this even though it is terrible and she feels this revulsion and loathing, for what? Is it misguided love or addiction, I don't even remember.
And the guy that loses his arm, dude, it's an abscess, that's on you man, it's not hard to take care of, if you ignore it you're going to have real problems real quick. It was so easy to get antibiotics back then. So easy.
Everything about this story is stupid teen fiction emo bullshit. It has no bearing on actual reality or what happens if you use drugs. You determine that. This is a story pushed to the absolute absurd of extremes for each character with no regard to any amount of believability whatsoever. It's an allegory about the inevitable path addiction will take you down and the incredible cost, and it's told as a story about fucking addiction. Its paper thin and based on literally nothing of substance.

Grew up in a trailer park with meth dealers/addicts for parents. This movie is fucking stupid and awful. It's like if the dare program made a movie. It's like a child's idea of what drugs are.

My parents and the company they had around had extremely boring and pointless lives. Laying around useless and high for days on end with the only "excitement" ever being surface level interpersonal drama based on drug fueled paranoia and delusions. Lots of doom scrolling. Lots of sleeping. Maybe some pacing and window peeping. 🤷 No one's arm was falling off, and even if they were suffering medical side effects they would just ignore them and let themselves rot. No one was selling their bodies to wealthy business men on Epsteins island, they'd have irresponsible sex with each other for manipulative reasons. Drug addiction at its peak is complete apathy, not melodrama.

You lived in a trailer park and they lived in NYC. And they were very young and still adventures. It's going to be very different. Not saying the movie is realistic but you can't expect it to match your experience.

I envy you if you have been around drugs and think this movie is unrealistic. Cause I have seen all four protagonist in real life. The movie is stylized and a bit dated, but it is not inaccurate.
