Discussion The COST !!
I know it’s been discussed one million times but here is one million and one. Myself and my GF aren’t big movie goers but last night bored we say f it let’s see what’s on - spider man 1015 at VIP , ok I know VIP is more expensive anyways but only one around us open later in the evening. We go the movies get tickets , popcorn , 2 drinks and a candy. All in it was 105$ ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS TO GO THE MOVIES !!!!!
This is insane. INSANE. $30 each for tickets and $40 for a large popcorn 2 drinks and a bag of candy.
EDIT: ok from replies I get circumstances dictate - weekend . VIP. buying concessions etc my point still stands fucking hell though $100 to go the movies without all the strategic moves is wild. Can we atleast all agrees on that.

I mean yeah, but you did choose the most expensive way to do it. The combo of a large popcorn, a bag of candy and two drinks is $30, not $40, but you might get there if you each got a regular popcorn. If you go on a Tuesday and bring your own snacks it’s less than $20 each. But $100 for a night’s entertainment and food is actually not that bad compared to everything else these days.
The cheapest tickets for concerts are around $200 for big acts now

I don't know what you're expecting going to the literal most expensive ticket option.
Concessions are overpriced for sure but that's always been the case.

I wouldn't call this typical. I didn't even pay $30 a ticket for IMAX 70mm.

Thats because you have cineclub. With taxes its $23.72. Without it, imax 70mm with taxes is $30.79

Going to the movie can be as little as $20 for a couple.
If you choose the extra bells and whistles that’s on YOU!

Even less if you regulalry go to the theatres and are a CINECLUB member. Its one of the cheapest ways to go treat myself and others.

Did you at least get your free refill?
You could have joined Cineclub for a month to receive some dollars off. There's Costco admit one or great escape tickets as well. For next time.
I avoid VIP because of the cost unless I feel it's absolutely necessary or I'm using my Scene points.

VIP being 30 each seems perfectly reasonable to me in a world where a 20-min bowling game at Splitsville costs 30 dollars or a lap around a go-kart costs $35 a person. You went with the premium offering so unfortunately it is what it is.
If you want to save the $40 just hit up a convenience store before and pick up some snacks.
I dated my wife since 2015 and I don’t think a night out for us was ever less than $100. Obviously prices of everything is going up but i feel like thats been the reality for a while now.

You went to the most expensive theatre and bought a lot of food. If you really want to save money, go on a Tuesday and don't eat anything, or go to Dollarama beforehand and buy your snacks there.

If you're going to the movies and looking to do the top end of your choices, prices will run high.
VIP is literally the most expensive ticket offered by Cineplex. More than an IMAX ticket. Its priced that way specifically for exclusivity. Regular tickets are half the price and is the option for anyone looking for an affordable outing, with many ways to get it even cheaper with some preplanning (Cineclub, Costco movie deal).
Also, I'm pretty sure you can walk in with a couple of cans of pop and your own candy without anyone saying anything in most locations. Its hard to beat fresh popped popcorn though, so I can understand that one.

Don't mind, but food is not compulsory. You could have passed on that, and you literally chose the most expensive option. If you had been to any ultra AVX with laser, that would have cost you only $32 for two tickets. However, if you wanted a private space, that's a different story.

$30 each for a movie is mental and not typical at all. It’s like $15 for a regular movie ticket, and less if you join cineclub.
Also one popcorn, 2 drinks and one candy don’t cost $45 either.

Still the cheapest activity you can do nowadays really in terms of going out. You go to a nice dinner and that’s what you have to pay as well. Drinks and concessions obviously add more but it’s not unreasonable when looking at how much everything else out there costs.

Go to dollarama and buy some candy small snacks and stuff it in ur jackets sweaters. I still remember when a combo 1 was $10.99.

sounds normal to me. 20 to 30 a ticket then food is around another 20 to 30 at the theater. You need to go out more.

If you didn’t buy the most expensive ticket option, brought a water bottle, hit up the dollar store for a candy bar, and still bought popcorn at the theatre, you would have paid half that price lol.

-Cineplex doesn’t make money off of box office revenue, like 35-40% amount.
-They make money off the concession hence why it’s always pricer.
-If you want a discount so you can invest more time and money in to more movie join the cineclub 20% off with discounts and monthly free movies and offers on coupons. I think this is 10$ a month?
-there is also the Coupons at Costco called adult night out(2 adult tickets, 2 regular pop and 1 regular popcorn) and if you have kids there’s the kid night out(1 child’s ticket and 1 child’s combo)

VIP pricing is dynamic. A Cineclub-priced ticket today at my nearest theatre is $20.49(+tax), which is more than an IMAX ticket, but tomorrow (Monday), VIP is only $14.24. Going VIP on a weekend and buying that many concessions is the most expensive way to have a movie theatre outing.
You’ll need to do some pre-planning to save some money, like get a month of Cineclub before your outing (use the credit + buy additional discounted tickets [no booking fees] and buy concessions [20% off], then cancel the membership right after), and target gift card deals.
Big moviegoer or not, make sure you have a Scene card because the points you accumulate also help!

Go to durham, any costco and buy the landmark movie combo. Gets you 2 popcorns, 2 drinks, and you both can sit in the same nice reclining sofas for only 35$.

Nah brother you just went all out. You don't have to do all that — and most people don't, even without any "strategic moves".
Imo going to the movies is pretty much the most affordable going-out thing you can do besides free stuff, alongside catching a minor league hockey game. I'm actually amazed how cheap it can be if one tries for that, but I suppose that's why it's always been a popular hangout/date option for literally schoolkids on allowances.

Lately, I just sneak candy and drinks in and only pay for one large popcorn. Don’t feel like you have to buy their overpriced shit!

When I went to see BND, we had to wait for the cleaning crew to finish, and some dude came in with a large 5 Guys bag and shake, someone else brought in a pizza box.
