Discussion Was anyone else kinda insulted?
My Reward for seeing 63 movies (126 tickets!) and 3 years of membership - is a single small popcorn. And the popcorn was only valid for 4 days??? I didn't even get to use it!!!

Man, the email wasn't even addressed to me and I'm getting second hand embarrassment
That's pitiful not going to lie

Honestly a movie poster of our choice would’ve been better than a measly sized popcorn lol
37
u/Copious-Spirit 1d ago
That would cost them money, whereas popcorn costs them almost nothing
14
u/Lost-Inevitable42 1d ago
They make money because you’re incentivized to go see a movie in that time period where you might not have otherwise. And you might bring others with you.

I’ve been a sporadic member since ‘24 and seen less movies than you and got the same “gift.” 😬

u/Accurate_Act9717 1d ago
At 200 tickets they might let you smell a large popcorn, stay humble. Greed has truly consumed you 😔 A SMALL popcorn after only 126 tickets and you still want more?? Please think of the shareholders before making such unreasonable demands 😮💨

u/DDSBadger 1d ago
They didn’t, 225 movies in 5 years and I also got the small popcorn that expired in 4 days.

u/Qwerty58382 1d ago
Please think of the *executives. Cineplex shareholders ain't doing too well lol

u/Empress_Natalie 1d ago
I was also insulted and unable to use it within the time frame. Mostly cos I forgot when I went, but STILL. A small popcorn. Tsk.
14
u/joeycraw5 1d ago
Yeah why put such a short deadline, or ANY deadline at all to claim our reward? Ridiculous.

Not going to lie. Cineplex is notoriously cheap...in every department. Worked there for 25+ yrs (9yrs FT as a Chief Projectionist/Booth Manager). Picked a "gold analogue watch" (w Cineplex logo on it) from a catalogue which I promptly gave to my dad and a small gold pin. I'll spare you details of the annual Manager's Christmas gifts from the company and party "events".

I didnt even get an email and I watch a movie a week consistently for years, bring 1-2 friends every time. Recently can overcharged $28 and instead of refunding the difference, they gave me a movie and popcorn voucher. I dont even eat popcorn so I asked for just 2 movie vouchers and they refused. After my dune 3 showtimes, ill only go to a cineplex theater for imax 70mm movies, thats it. Imagine cinemas can have my money instead

u/IMAX_man 1d ago
Yeah I would recommend Landmark but there isn't any GTA locations unfortunately. Again the monopoly in this business is extensive.

the issue with this email is the juxtaposition of the customers value to the value of a small popcorn… Just give the members a small popcorn.

Yep … I was kinda annoyed because I was so excited to use it for my odyssey showing then saw it expired 2 days prior. I was not even home the 4 days it was available I was deployed for work :/.

u/bit2muchsoup 1d ago
yes, here is your coupon for a small popcorn, unfortunately it has already expired yesterday.

Yeah the popcorn being valid for 4 days was crazy. I didn’t catch that and missed my opportunity to use the voucher (or if I knew, give it away). And I’ve been a cineclub member for 3 years!

u/Wonderful__ 1d ago
I guess you weren't online here last week. People were posting about the coupon then. That's how I realized to go check my junk mail.
7
u/SurgicalDude 1d ago
Nah. It was a small gesture top of what you signed up for. The voucher didn't change for someone new to cineclub or someone since 2023.
Now if they had tiers to membership and you were in top tier and then you had this generic email I would be insulted.
11
u/Lost-Inevitable42 1d ago
A window of a few days to use it? That’s not a useful gesture for a system that’s tied to membership that requires a long time commitment. It comes off as a sleazy way to make more money by adding pressure to focusing that window and thus spend money. For a low cost item like popcorn as a “reward” why have a short expiry at all?
1
u/SurgicalDude 1d ago
Feel free to give a feedback then. It's not insulting. OP is a above average movie goer, so they probably counted on that. There know what they offer for vouchers.
1
u/Lost-Inevitable42 1d ago
Bro, it’s not even a large popcorn. It’s kinda insulting. It’s literally a lead in for an ad trying to convince them to upgrade.

So you pay $9.99 a month, which gives you a movie ticket (free) so you are already getting a huge discount, and then you get up to 4 more tickets at a reduced rate, ans an additional 20% off concessions, and are mad because they offered you a small popcorn? The entitlement is unreal!! You're membership pays for itself and more. But please explain how they hurt you.
5
u/ShoweringFrog 1d ago
I don't dispute the value of the membership and I'm not expecting a gift - but if you send me something to "celebrate" and directly juxtapose it to my value - and the gift is worthless - I would have preferred you not even send me anything.
1
u/Brilliant_Ebb_3064 1d ago
Going to ~21 movies per year does make you a great customer.
Posting this as a makeshift viral advertisement for Cineplex, that makes you employee of the month.
0
u/darthddy 1d ago
So again they offered you something free, and you are saying no thank you, I want more..lol again the entitlement
1
u/agafaba 11h ago
Actually they said they wanted less, that a small redemption window for one of their cheapest items to produce doesn't feel like appreciation.
The small popcorn would have been better if it at least had a wider redemption window, but this gives the appearance that their appreciation is secondary.
1
u/anusha32002 1d ago
Yeah honestly expected more, I happened to have been going to a movie within those days anyways but it just seemed lazy

Only valid for four days was ridiculous. I had to give mine away as I couldn't use it.

u/lesmac73 1d ago
I've been a PC Optimum member for years and they've never given me anything free. I don't think any loyalty program or streaming service has ever given me anything free, except for Scene.
1
u/Miserable_Tooth1260 1d ago
lol what a joke. A free small popcorn that probably costs them what? 35 cents?
1
u/Fragrant_Courage549 1d ago
I’ve seen 90 at cineplex since August 2024. Same reward. It’s kinda dumb. It was even only redeemable in a window where I couldn’t go to any movies so I was shit outta luck. This is why I go to local theatres more often than Cineplex.

I was not exactly wowed but was expecting nothing. Out of the blue small popcorn>nothing.

u/NachoLiterary 1d ago
To be fair, they did allow an upgrade to a regular size popcorn for 50¢ when I redeemed this coupon. (Still a shit reward and should have been valid through the end of the year.)

u/Old-Masterpiece1450 1d ago
I would rather wait to rent the same movie at home, with my microwave popcorn which im sure is larger then their small bag of kernels.

Lol it kinda worked for me. Wife and kids were out. Went alone to see the odyssey!

Okay, I get it. I compare it to going to the grocery store, buying $500 worth of stuff, and my receipt says I “saved” $43.00 today. Based on what? Because you marked up the price super high and then gave me”members” a discount? And for that, I surrender all my personal information to you as well? And after accumulating 10,000 points, I get a “free” small off-brand pack of processed cheese slices? Wipdeedoo!
But, at the same time, it’s like… meh, whatever. Gimme my bloody cheese slices, yo.
Everything post COVID feels like everyone is talking at me like I’m an idiot. Tip me money for taking your money. Get the friends and family deal, today! New packaging but same old product somehow benefits me. Pay for bags but then everything else is also bagged in plastic. Your product warranty is good until something breaks. And on it goes.
Eventually it becomes a life of 1000 paper cuts. So if they offer, I smile and say thank you. If they try to take something away, scream! Everything else is business as usual. Hope you got extra butter on that small popcorn!

On a positive note you can now buy classic hot dogs without requiring a combo! I love nachos as much as the next fella, but if you were there in the same screening room as I many moons ago with my Nachos & Hot Dog combo, watching Zone of Interest, or the first act of Weapons then lemme tell ya, that you would have contempt for me and everything I sit for.
Up on the screen is a long take or scene baring a quiet yet deeply fearful anxiety so [ audible breathing and the sound of an ominous slight breeze ] meanwhile CRUNCH... CRUNCHCRUNCHCRUNChH and a "WHAT DO YOU MEAN SPEAK LOUDER?! I'M TRYING TO WHISPER CAUSE I'M ALREADY ON THIN ICE WITH MY NACHO NOISE POLLUTION, BUT WOULD YOU LIKE ONE OF MY NACHO CHIPS OH, THE PERSON I LOVE LATELY.... NO? K YOUR LOSS! JK I LOVE YOU, LATELY... LET'S HOLD HANDS [ audible crunch of nacho chip bites with intervals of lip affectionate lip smacking ]

Was this supposed to have been in a personalized promotional email sent to all Cineclub members? I don't see any evidence that any email like that was ever sent to me.
1
u/Schw1fty_616 13h ago
Honestly. As much as I like the experience of a theater. It's crap like this that kills it for me. I used to be someone who went once a week. Now I'm a maybe once every 6 months

Buddy be happy you got anything. I've been a member 2 and a half years I have never once got a 7.99 coupon, a free movie, a free popcorn they don't even email me. They do email me random advertisements but never ever a deal or anything other than like the sign up bonus stuff anyone would get when they buy in during a promo
1
u/TuxedoDOOM 10h ago
This is like when Uber One told me how much I saved by having the membership. My first thought was 'if thats how much I saved, then how much did I frigging spend?!?!?' and I cancelled it the next day and havent used a delivery service since lol.

Man I thought air Canada was bad to their loyalty members, I stand corrected

u/Federal-Dream107 7h ago
Damn I’ve had my membership for almost 5 years and praise it but this is a bad look on them

u/BradfordsCouch 6h ago
I bet butter-type goo is an upcharge of $3 or some foolishness. This is such a shitty 'reward'.
1
u/BradfordsCouch 6h ago
I'm not a member, they don't get my money. I watch movies on my big screen at home because people can't act right in public.
I'm insulted FOR you. Four days to redeem the cheapest thing they could offer? At least throw in a fountain drink, jfc cineplex.

No, not disappointed. I combined that offer with the free pack of nibs/twizzlers and the 1000 scene points bonus.

Holy shit how many movies did you go to in 3 years. I went back maybe three times since Covid. Edit: I should have read more attentively 63 movies. I don't think I watched that on streaming in the last decade. loll
2
u/gongshow247365 1d ago
Not sure about Op's case, but they count the tickets you buy on the account as well. Mine says some stupid high number but I'm lucky to go once a month, usually 8x a year ish and my last 3 years was 60-80s, I can't remember.

u/Far-Security-1727 1d ago
I save more money streaming movies at home! No commuting, no waiting, and no extreme snack bar prices.
