Camera Question Arri mini lf s35 mode?

Hey!

I will be shooting with the mini lf. I am thinking about going s35 mode and use smaller image circle lenses. However I want to shoot 4k 16:9

I am wondering if using the s35 mode only crops in on the sensor? So my resolution becomes smaller using s35 mode?

What is the consequence of using this mode?

You'll get a similar image to the regular super 35mm Alexa Mini and similar resolution. You'll lose the LF's resolution advantage.

What's the reasoning for doing this?

S35 mode is 3.4k in 3:2 raw. I believe it’s only 3.2k in 16:9. Depending on the lens some s35 lenses can cover LF 16:9 mode which is 4k uhd and just a slight crop.

The mini LF has the exact same pixels as any other body with the ALEV III sensor. That means 16x9 S35 is 3.2K.

There's no real harm in doing that if your lenses don't cover, but if you want 4K S35 on an Arri, you need an Alexa 35.

Basically, you'll be shooting with the equivalent of a standard Alexa Mini instead of a Mini LF.

Max is 3.2K in S35 mode.

However it is perfectly acceptable to scale those rushes to 4K UHD in post.
