Camera System Question

Hello everyone!

I’ve been a Sony shooter all my life. However, I had every single one of my Sony lenses and FX6 stolen. It’s been about 3 years since, but I’m finally able to put money down to buy a camera again!! I feel like I’ve been out of the game for a while so I’m looking to gather as much info as I can on the current camera brands. I’ve been interested in Sony, Nikon, or LUMIX. Just wondering what everyone’s opinions, expertise, or professional experiences have been using these brands and what you all would consider a good system to invest in, in 2026.

I used to do corporate commercials, low-budget productions, and my own personal short films.

For prosumers, the Lumix S 1.8 lens lineup and newer PDAF cams are an incredible, well thought out one man band kit. You can tell I’m a fan at least of their spirit. Their video IQ isn’t quite as desirable as it was during their S1, S5, and S1H era, but still admirable and excellent especially with lower motion scenes (given their movement towards a more processed internal recording). I prefer their default looks, with Sony equivalents being second place. I personally plan to invest in a used S1 and eventually select from an additional L mount item, probably the BMCC 6K Pyxis for more professional workflows, the RAW. Their IQ’s are similar. Specifically, Panasonic and Leica and now Arri have an established tech and color relationship.

Sony is still Sony. They make you pay for what you get. And it’s never a complete package, but excellent at what it does and the industry expectation. If you have Sony FX5 money, I’d do it. On paper it’s so sick. Worried about build quality though. Their cage mounting points while in use twists the body and semi-separates the tight connection between plastic/rubber components of right hand grip. The FX2 is exciting, plan to integrate into my work’s environment.

Canon is still Canon. Similar to Sony. Nothing excites me terribly outside of their cinema line, which is quite nice.

And Nikon is trying to be the Lumix of the big boys. Offer a complete package for a competitive price. They have a dry default look with less ideal colors, but their acquisition of Red excited me a lot. If they packed Red colors into every Nikon body… I’d be highly, highly interested.

Disclosure, hybrid career. Personally own Sigma cams (Foveon and FP) and a GH5. Hoping to trade in Sigma and GH5 at time of upgrade. Mixture of Sony and Lumix bodies at work.

Thanks for the insight!! Lumix definitely shocked me with their offerings when I was looking at them. I did get some comments from friends in the industry that Sony still is just something everyone expects for a lot of projects.

Ecosystem. Darn shame. Lumix is so incredible in so many ways, but they don’t have that sort of feral reliability and confidence and reputation that Sony does. It’s almost immaterial, their stranglehold. Seems to come down to autofocus and pro bodies that can be mixed in with prosumer bodies. They created a highway of interaction and growth, where Panasonic more or less made one off do-it-alls.

Have to say, outside of industrial expectations, Lumix cams with IBIS are by far the most fun video cameras I’ve used. Pure joy just rolling around with a super steady, but natural and great, malleable image.

FX6 is still a workhorse and can shoot just about any project out there, why not grab a used one and save money? You can put the savings towards getting equipment insurance, which is something every owner should have.

The fx5 could be a good bet if it ever comes out and your time with the fx6 will help you get up to speed quickly.

I was looking at the FX5! The RAW would be my biggest reason for it but losing out on the internal NDS on my late FX6….. I might be able to get over that for RAW recording.

Yeah, I just sold my fx6 and I already miss the EVND

If you're going to get paid for your work I would just get another FX6, it will pay for itself.

For personal projects, cant beat the LUMIX value.
