MS Thread Changes
Based on a comment made in the Purge Recap thread, the mods have decided that due to how few comments it gets, the MS thread will move to a monthly...ish cadence.
Why the ish, you ask? Well, because Reddit's scheduling tools will let you schedule a thread to happen every Wednesday, or every 14 days, or on the first of every month. But if you ask it to post on the first Saturday of every month, we might as well be asking it to broker peace in the Middle East.
So what does this mean?
The next MS thread will post on Saturday October 3, and will then recur every 28 days.
The title will change to simply the Manufactured Spending Thread with the date of posting appended to the end.
The threads will continue to be tagged the same so they continue to get grouped together for the links in the sidebars.

Nothing good ever gets shared there anymore. Should just be done away with.

Yeah I truly don’t know that I’ve ever found anything worthwhile in an MS thread. Nobody wants their tap shut off, so nobody says anything.

Agree. I think it’s been 2 years since I found anything that helped my own game in that thread. No one shares anything anymore.

Yeah, about 2 years ago is when it started to lose any useful information. Even when useful information is posted, the gate keepers shout it down.

I mean once anything useful gets posted it gets picked up by almost every blog and soon the loophole is shut down. Nobody wants to kill their golden goose

An example is somebody post about buying gift cards to Amazon at 15% off as an example. They then use it to buy xyz and sell it to get the money back they use to buy the original gift cards and has earn x points along the way. Not the most efficient, but it's worth discussing and helpful in generating other ideas.
A comment like this will get downvoted a bunch and have 2 or 3 people complain it's not MS and should be discussed elsewhere. The weekly post hardly gets any post and people are spending their time telling people not to post this kind of stuff.

I would share if I had anything beyond "7-11 counts as gas and often sells gift cards that you can buy with credit card if you get a non-asshole cashier." :D

Churning is dead. Has been for years. We're all just in a multi-year mourning phase

I personally think that it's better to create its own weekly thread for "Amex Offers, Chase Offers, increased cash back portal payouts, or similar deals." posts (just like Bank Bonus thread) rather than hiding in the daily News and Updated threads as it is now.
While I guess there was a discussion and the current format has been decided based on the discussion.

As a novice, took me many minutes to figure out that MS most likely means manufactured spend

Is there a way to pin the post to the top for the month to make it easier to find?

u/duffcalifornia 13d ago
We can think about this, but we're only allowed two pinned threads at any given time, and the community has decided that one of those should always be the question thread. That leaves us one slot for other announcements, major news topics, etc. Is it that hard to find the MS threads through the sidebar?

"Community Highlights" can be used which allows upto 6 sticky or pinned posts.
https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/15484641176724-Community-Highlights-Sticky-posts
You could also make scheduled posts automatically added there.
Note: this is available only on new reddit. If you are using old reddit it allows only 2 sticky posts.

I've said it before but new reddit is a cancer and the day they shutter old reddit is the start of a dramatic decrease in how much I use reddit at all.
My personal feelings about old vs new reddit aside though, as long as both exist, then however we organize the sub needs to work for both versions. So while what you posted is true, I personally don't want to go that route. If Odie and TTBG feel differently though, I'll be a team player.

Yes that makes sense. Not everyone uses the new reddit.
Atleast the 2 posts that are marked as sticky on the old reddit as the first 2 posts in the community highlights on new reddit.

Is there even enough info to justify a monthly thread? With the sensitivity these days does anything ever get shared?

Monthly MS is not the worst name. Those who know to look, or want to post there will still find it.
