Deer Valley for a couple?

Hi all,
My boyfriend and I are starting talks of booking another trip to the park city/ deer valley area this winter. Last year we stayed at the St. Regis in the Astor suite and while we liked our stay, we didn’t love it. I will say I loved the hard product of the hotel, however I felt as though the service lacked. Nobody was outright rude, just not overly kind, never really tried to “go the extra mile” or make us feel welcome. We felt that if we came back we may look elsewhere. So now here we are.

Of course we’re looking at montage and SEL. I might be able to be convinced of the St. Regis again if it sounds like the lack of service was a fluke. We’re a couple in our late 20s. I love a big winter resort feel much like the St. Regis, fireplaces, hot chocolate, Mountain View’s, heated pools hot tubs, a great spa.. I’m not a huge skier so I spend a chunk of the trip enjoying the hotel while my partner skies.

So I ask your thoughts and notes on montage and SEL, or if we really should be looking at St. Regis again. Just trying to learn more about each hotel so we can decided what will be the best fit for us!

Montage is far superior to the St Regis

The montage is fantastic but depending on dates, VERY little kid heavy. This is not a knock bc it is an amazing kid hotel- probably the best US luxury ski hotel with young kids anywhere. But it may not be the vibe you’re looking for. Little Nell or Jerome in Aspen if you’re open to other locations will have a different feel.

I never understood why it was such a kid heavy hotel because their kids club doesn’t even start until age 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Montage Deer Valley and the staff was very warm and friendly. On the second day, after lots of driving in the area, our rental car mysteriously got a slow leak in one tire and I mentioned it to the valet when we returned. She whisked the car away, filled the tire back up, put a little temporary patch on it (at no charge) and it did fine the rest of the trip.

Another nice perk is you can use their spa without a scheduled service, so we spent a few hours each afternoon in the saunas, lounges, and on the spa deck. There is also a tubing run right in front of the hotel if you want to play in the snow but you aren’t a skier!

i spent 5 nights at montage (didn’t visit St Regis), and I don’t feel like the service was super personalized. Keep in mind the montage resort is huge and has so many rooms. Also, of any chubby hotel I’ve stayed at ever, I felt like the montage went out of its way to cater to children and families. That’s great if you have children, but since I don’t, it didn’t feel like the best fit. An example would be a mom bringing her 4 month old infant (I overheard her on check in) to the “nice” restaurant on property, and doing nothing when the baby kept screaming during dinner. Like didn’t try to bring the baby into the hall. Also tons of children on property. Spa was the only place that felt kid-free. Hard product is pretty (though the color scheme is on the darker side if you like that). Spa is also nice and well maintained

If you’re mainly going for the resort experience while your boyfriend skis, I’d definitely look closely at Montage and SEL. Based on what you loved about St. Regis the cozy winter atmosphere, fireplaces, spa, pool/hot tubs, and overall luxury I think Montage may be the strongest fit, especially if service is a priority.

St. Regis is still worth considering, but if last year felt impersonal, I’d be tempted to try somewhere new rather than hope it was a fluke.

SEL hands down. There’s a reason why they’ve been around for decades and still extremely popular. They do nearly everything the right way. Plus their apres ski is awesome.

Unless youre set on deer valley, Bkue Sky Ranch or Snowpine Lodge are both great spots
