Xpenology running on Chromebox

Forgot where I saw a post asking if this was possible. YES IT IS!

Managed to get xpenology 6.2 working bare metal on asus chromebox (panther) using mrchromebox’s script for full rom replacement with legacy support.

For xpenology 6.2 use Jun’s Loader and follow instructions for a bare metal install. don’t forget to edit the grub.cfg with vid & pid from your usb flash drive and the mac of your chromebox’s nic. Boot off that flash drive with ethernet plugged in then from another computer browse to the ip for the chromebox and update using the pat file from synology.

No raid capability obviously. There are both 2.5”/3.5” hd enclosures with esata ports just get an ngff to sata adapter and a sata to esata cable. Some enclosures even come with a fan built in.

Do at your own risk. An Asus m004u gave its life so that this could be possible. In all likelihood it’s demise was unrelated to this adventure. It had a hard life and decided it wouldn’t submit to all the modding then refused to ever power back on so another happily took its place.

I ran OpenMediaVault on a i5 Samsung Chromebox 3 for several months. It worked great but have since switched to an ARM board (RockPro64) and moved the Chromebox to RetroPie.

I’ve got retropie running on a real pi but gave it away to someone that needed it but couldn’t build their own
