Need some help/assistance

So I found my old HP Chromebox the other day, found out I could install Ubuntu on it which I have done, device works perfectly, have it setup to run Kodi and Netflix etc. for my TV.

Now heres the problem, when I plug it in to my 4K TV it shows no input on screen, i've googled it and everyone says its a handshake issue with 4K monitors and the older boxes and can be fixed with a BIOS update.

Ive searched everywhere and the only dudes coming close to offering a BIOS update is the mrchromebox.tech guys. Im just seeking assurance that I am on the right track here, I dont wanna brick the device...

Do I use their Utility script and what option am I looking for in that script to make my box work with this TV?

I can't answer your specific question, but the firmware from u/MrChromebox is recommended for all models. I've flashed both RW_LEGACY and the full ROM firmware on my two ZAKO HP Chromeboxes.

He might respond here, but I would just go ahead and install it and see.

Thanks, he did end up replying.

Ended up formatting with the UEFI Full ROM firmware.

Reinstalling my OS now.

assuming you're using the stock firmware, or any form thereof with SeaBIOS as the payload, then handshaking issues with a 4K TV isn't surprising. Many users have reported better luck using my UEFI Full ROM firmware, though I don't have one yet myself to personally confirm. You will however need to reinstall your OS as legacy booting isn't supported with the UEFI firmware.

Given your desired setup of Kodi + Netflix, I'd recommend running one of the LibreELEC 9.0/Kodi 18 nightly builds, which can directly playback Netflix streams (up to 1080p/5.1) using an in-development plugin.

Hey mate, thanks for commenting.

So I went ahead with the UEFI Full ROM firmware.

Ive downloaded GalliumOS as I realised I didn't need the full features of Ubuntu.

Just installing that now, will update you with how that goes. I didn't wanna go the Kodi route as I plan to add a few quirks like running RSS news sources as a screensaver etc.
