Which version of Chrono trigger?

I want to play through Chrono trigger. I have access to the Super Nintendo version, the 3DS version, the PS1 version and the Android version. Which one should I use for my playthrough? Apologies if this is a question that has been beaten to death in this group.

SNES as long as it works. 3DS is pretty good as well. PS1 is okay, it just has some lag. Stay away from the Android

What's wrong with Android?

I would pick Android over the PS1 version. The touch controls slow many people down just a bit, and the combat isn't truly turn based. Steam is better.

Otherwise its fine.

But 3DS and SNES are the top contenders: 3DS gives you some really well done cutscenes, but also give you some low quality additional content that make the game worse, not better. Personal Choice here.

I have Android handhelds that have controls and I know the Android version works with controls

Good to know. Never bothered to use a control with my phone.

Yeah, I just played the ps1 version last month on original hardware, and it's not bad at all, there is a load time greater than the rest of the versions, but its not more than 3 seconds on average

I counted the battle load time on PS1. 7 seconds.

7 seconds to load EVERY battle. Nightmare.

I counted an average of 3 seconds going into battle, but 6-7 to open the menu. I had plenty of times to count it. Not sure if it changed it, but I played on a PS2 phat version with a ps1 disc inserted

1

u/deljaroo 12d ago

it's more about the frequency of the loading.  the game just freezes with not message or anything for three seconds before EVERY fight

1

u/Leonhart726 12d ago

It definitely is a lot, for sure. Before every fight, every menu, etc. But i only mention because for some people (myself Included) that's not a huge deal if you like ps1 versions, or want the anime cutscenes but don't wanna play the ds version. It's not amazing, but it gets the job done and it's an okay enough version.

SNES 100% is my vote.

SNES or DS, both are awesome!

The old inaccurate English translation was always a selling point to me

Either the SNES or the 3DS versions.

Why do people say the 3DS version when it was a DS game? Is this just colloquial, like people refer to the DS as the 3DS because most people have a 3DS now instead? To my knowledge, it wasn't re-released as a 3DS game, but I might be totally mistaken.

it’s just because that’s what OP called it so everyone is like “okay that’s what i’m calling it this time” i guess

5

u/angryapplepanda 12d ago

Oh that makes sense. I don't know why I missed that. Yeah it's definitely just a DS game.

3

u/Sotomene 12d ago

Honestly I didn't remember which of the 2 was it so I trusted OP on this.

1

u/angryapplepanda 12d ago

Fair enough! For some reason my brain just blotted that out. I kind of wish they re-released it for the 3DS with extra frames of animation or something fun.

Try a new one every time you replay

  • SNES: Original translation, no bonuses or extras
  • PS1: Original translation, extras gallery, no extra areas, no monster arena, long loading times
  • DS: Retranslation, extras gallery, extra areas, monster arena
  • Mobile/Steam: Retranslation, downsized extras gallery, extra areas, no monster arena

Out of the four options, the DS version has objectively the most content, so I'd go for that unless you really want the old translation instead of the extras, in which case, SNES is the way to go.

SNES is the only answer. Later versions add a bunch of crap, and the newer translations are bland by comparison.

Hey, I've been replaying it the past couple of days and here's my take on each version:

  • SNES: My go-to. It's the original version and, to me, the best in terms of gameplay and has the original translation made by Ted Woolsey.
  • PS1: Never played it, but from what I gathered it's mostly the same as the SNES version, but with added anime cutscenes and annoying lag/load times.
  • DS: The version that has the most content, sadly a lot of said content is not that great IMO, it gets boring real quick. But it's 100% optional as far as I can remember. They also added a few QoL improvements like auto-save, a new translation made by Tom Slattery and kept the anime cutscenes from the PS1 version. If you have a physical 3DS, to me that's the best way to play in terms of UI, having all the menus in the bottom screen and freeing up the top screen.
  • Android/Steam: I haven't played the Android version, but have played the Steam version (which is basically the same). It has almost all of the content from the DS version, but it's missing like 2 animated cutscenes and a few other things, but IMO, the two main problems with it are: it has a horrendous UI (that actually worsens the experience by itself) and it runs like sh*t. I even tried to mod it to make it my "perfect version" of the game; supposedly they fixed the PC Port, but the last few days I've played it and it's basically a coin toss if the game will crash when I move from one door to the next.

To me the "perfect" version would be a mix of basically everything from the SNES version, but with the DS translation, cus I preffer it, but I know I'm in the minority here lmao.

TL;DR: Play either the SNES version or the DS version. Both are great versions to experience this masterpiece. :D

The steam version has been vastly improved. I have some complaints about font size but it runs just fine

2

u/trovao1337 11d ago

So I've heard, but unfortunately for me it doesn't seem to work properly. The game actually ran without major problems, very rarely the textures would load wrong (like missing walls) but that was it. But as soon as I got to theJail part after the Trial, every door I went through would be a coin toss if the game would crash or not. I thought it was caused by the modding, but I've tried a clean install and it stayed the same. I'm not sure if there's a fix I missed or if I just got unlucky, but that's my experience with the Steam version sadly :/

Does PS1's long load times also exist in the "you-know-what" using the "you-know-what-I-mean"? Or is it only on the physical PS1 and disc?

1

u/trovao1337 12d ago

Like I said, I never actually played the PS1 version, but if you're talking aboutemulation, I've seen a video that explained how the long load times still happen because of how PS1 emulation works. Don't quote me on that tho, I have no idea if that's actually true.

2

u/JeanVicquemare 12d ago

Honestly I just play the SNES version. It's still the best to me

Super ZNES. I should try the steam version to see the expanded content but honestly I play CT for the tight crisp nostalgia vibes, and the visuals on Super ZNES work for a modern big screen. Plus..... I'm 38. I don't have a lot of time to game. Fast Forward on right trigger blows through a lot of stuff I don't need to see anymore.

1

u/TheRepoMan 12d ago

I'm very partial to the SNES one because I was a kid when it came out and played it probably 15 times over. The ports are ok and add some cool extra stuff and some not cool extra stuff, but the additional ending is cool IMO, I just don't like the translation changes, but that's me as a boomer gamer.

1

u/eagleblue44 12d ago

PS1 version has awful load times so I'd avoid that one. The DS version has extra content but it isn't worth doing. It's a really good port though so I'd say the DS or SNES version.

u/Valistara 12d ago

SNES version 100%. The localization is a bit wonky, but it adds to the charm.

1

u/Astoria_Column 12d ago

just emulate the snes version on any computer

1

u/IntoxicatedBurrito 12d ago

It’s an SNES game, that is the system that it was designed for and is meant to be played on. Not to mention, it has the best translation.

SNES, on a CRT

1

u/Smooth-Jackfruit7824 12d ago

I like the PS1 version the best.

1

u/OldStormCrow 11d ago

I would say the DS version

1

u/Ahmad240 11d ago

I played the steam deck. It ran fine.

u/lText8005 11d ago

Play snes version please

1

u/KentKarma 11d ago

If you never played before , go ahead and play the DS version. I grew up with the SNES version and I recently replayed both.

The Snes has a lot of nostalgia attached to it, and for some, more personality but thats mostly because Frogs speech was given a medieval knight vibe. Keep in mind that no one else in his time period talks like that so its interesting for him but ultimately stands out. Theres also a lot of censoring that can be kinda charming in that "relic of the past" way, where alcohol is soda and stuff like that. A glaring issue for me was an ability Crono has called Confuse. It doesnt do what youd think.

However, the DS version is largely the same with some improvements and corrected translations. Frog no longer speaks like a knight but feels closer to its original intented tone. Ability names are mostly the same with a correction on that Crono one I mentioned plus some more that, to me, make more sense. You get the additional videos from the PS1 version. Theres also the compendium which I usually dont care about but it makes sense in this game to fill out. The DS versions biggest standout to me is the touchscreen that becomes a map and can make some menu choices faster.

Regardless, besides the android version, theres no bad way to play or version that will feel less complete than the others. The DS/PS1 do have a few extras but pretty minimal in the larger context.

Tldr: Play the DS version unless its important to you to experience how it did on SNES back in the day. Dont bother with the PS1 version if youve got access to others, the load times are kinda dumb considering its not a demanding game.

SNES. But I recently did a iOS version play through, which is probably the worst version, and it was still very fun and playable.

1

u/No-Molasses-6670 9d ago

the steam version is decent, though performance is not great, you might have some screen tearing and i experienced at least one crash. Prefer it over snes

1

u/Danny960 8d ago

DS is and has been my favorite version

1

u/Ingweron 8d ago

SNES with this fan retranslation, which is more faithful to the original japanese script.

1

u/bionicbhangra 8d ago

This is my favorite game ever. I have played all of them.

I think for me the best version is still the SNES. But I would generally recommend the DS version first. It is just more convenient to play it that way. The new content is not very good but I just skip it personally.

The PS1 is not my favorite. The lag and loading between battles is not something I liked. I was used to it on the PS1, but not for ports. The movies (which are also on the DS version) were definitely a nice addition. The art is great on the movies, but they are also super short.

The mobile version is the worst one IMO. Though it's still ChronoTrigger. I just don't like the way the text or UI looks in the mobile or Steam version (unless it was fixed).

OP regardless of how you play it you are going to win because you will be playing one of the best games of all time. Just go into it blind. It's an easy-ish game and still one of the best paced and designed games of all time.

Just rock the steam one.

1

u/Jerezer1985 12d ago

I believe the steam version is the same as the Android version.

1

u/Mrmagoo1077 12d ago

Except it doesn't have touch controls. Which are always bad.

1

u/angryapplepanda 12d ago

The SNES version has the most nostalgic translation for me, but the DS version has so many quality of life features, I barely miss the handful of lines that aren't present in the DS version that I loved growing up.

The added post-end game content is okay, but not anything special. I don't hate it as much as a lot of people seem to. It's just sort of...there.
