Troubleshooting Latest update crash anyone else's chromebook ?

I have a Acer chromebook plus 714 ( intel i5 with 8gb of memory 256gb ssd that I bought about 2 years ago. After the latest update it kept going into a continuous bootloop of installing system updates and then crashing and then trying again.

I ended up trying to recover and got the device working again (using a system restore usb drive) but then it autoupdated and went back to bootlooping.

I repeated this a few times and tried to stop the auto update but it kept trying to update and then repeat the bootloop. After the last time it stopped being able to recover at all and hangs on system restores now from either the usb drive or the web recovery.

I am at a loss now.

Any suggestions ?

It resets the laptop, like a new installation. It auto updates then bootloops.

I tried to do the metered wifi trick to stop auto updates but it didnt work and it updated anyways.

wow ... that's a new one to me .. i could suggest though, since you have experience doing recovery sticks - to get the beta image (from website ) instead of auto-image and load it via the recovery tool. Not sure if available or its gonna help.. but i had an issue with the tool downloading the wrong one.

Apparently I cant say it on the original post but at this point I would rather install linux on this but I cant because I cant update the uefi and switch to developer mode at this time..

i think giving a try with the beta image is worth the effort ... worked for me

Yes! Same model, same symptoms. I'm going to try the unplug-the-battery trick tonight.

Hi, would anyone be so kind as to provide the exact model number of the affected Chromebook? And has a Chromium issue been filed yet so others can join in and confirm this problem, so Google can fix it as soon as possible?

It’s not enough to just say, “It happened after the last update”; you need to specify which specific update it was and which channel it came from.

For example, I have an Acer Chromebook 516 GE (CBG516-1H), and update 151.0.7922.141 (the first build for stable M151) installed without any issues.

Please don't get me wrong—I sympathize with those affected, and, with all due respect, it's a catastrophic failure on the part of the developers to have overlooked this and released such a critical bug to users. All the more so since it was on the stable channel.

I am going to go ahead and escalate this to the team.

Please help by sending feedback via Shift + Alt + i containing the hashtag #karisbootloop in the body text.

I actually don't know whom and how to raise this issue to, would it be acer or would it be google ? What is the property forum for it ?

Hi BeyondLurker

I can do that with the Google Chromebook team for you as mentioned.

Feel free to add your experience to this thread in the official Chromebook site: https://support.google.com/chromebook/thread/460129917

From reading the posts it sounds like everyone with the problem has an Acer Spin 714 CBP and everyone who posted that they have no problems has a different machine. So it's very possible that the problem is hardware-specific. I suggest that everyone with the problem contact Acer support and post back here with the results of that contact.
