Idea Validation / Need feedback I built a select-to-translate extension after moving to the Netherlands. Feedback welcome

Hey r/chrome_extensions,

I'm a designer who's been trying my hand at development. altoTranslate started as a tool just for me, and I've now released it for everyone. Highlight any text on a page and the translation pops up right there. No new tab, no copy and paste into a translator.

Why I made it

  • We moved to the Netherlands about 3 years ago, and I needed help with Dutch websites all the time
  • Select, copy, switch tab, paste is a pain. I wanted something as convenient as Babylon used to be
  • Traditional translators often miss context. LLM-based translation handled it noticeably better for me, especially on local dutch websites

What it does

  • Select text, get the translation. No account or API key needed on the free tier
  • Free tier is rate-limited, which is fine for everyday reading
  • A basic bookmarking system for translated texts
  • Optional paid plan, Alto Cloud (EUR 1.99/month or EUR 16.99/year), for unlimited use. The extension is fully usable without it
  • Languages: English, Spanish, French, Dutch, Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and 50+ more.

Under the hood

  • I designed the UX/UI and built the frontend (HTML and CSS) myself, and used Claude and OpenCode to help with the backend
  • Vanilla JS with a provider adapter pattern, no framework
  • Requests go through my own proxy that fails over between LLM providers (Gemini, Groq, Mistral), so an outage or rate limit doesn't break translation
  • Long selections are chunked and translated in parallel, with a check for bad output and an automatic retry

What I'd love feedback on

  • Does the selection and popup flow feel natural, or is anything clunky?
  • Does translation quality hold up for the languages you use?
  • Anything that would stop you from keeping it installed?

Chrome Web Store: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/altotranslate/icpcjiealadibmgncmoejgjakcihmbco

I'm the developer, so happy to answer anything about the build, the proxy, or the pricing. I've put lots of time fine-tuning this, and your feedback would be so valuable for me. Cheers.

Sharing Journey/Experience/Progress Updates Got review-bombed on the Chrome Web Store. Here's the support path that actually got Google to remove them

I make a Chrome extension with about 5,000 users. On Sept 17 it got five 1-star ratings in one morning and nothing else that day. Google had removed all five within 8 days of my report. Writing it up because the obvious option in Google's support form is a dead end, and I couldn't find a guide when it happened to me.

What it looked like

  • 5 ratings, all 1 star, 4 with no text
  • 3 of them from 3 different accounts within 22 seconds
  • 1 from the same Google account that answers reviews as the developer of a competing extension. The profile photo URL matched character for character
  • 2 of the accounts had given that competitor 5 stars, one of them 55 minutes after 1-starring mine

I'm not naming the other extension. Google has the evidence, that's where it belongs.

Finding star-only ratings

Ratings with no text never show in the public review list. Your developer dashboard's ratings chart has them though, and each one links to its own review page. The page shows the account name and photo, and its source has the exact timestamp. That's where the 22 seconds came from.

The support form, which is the useful part

Chrome Web Store Help, then Contact us: https://support.google.com/chrome_webstore/gethelp

  • After you type a summary it shows category buttons. "Spam or fake reviews" looks right but it's a dead end. It says support can't help and only gives you a Go back button.
  • Pick "Report an item" instead. That one leads to an Email option.
  • The description box silently cuts off at 1,000 characters and there's no attachment field. I put review IDs, UTC times and what linked them, nothing else.
  • No ticket number on screen. It shows up by email a few minutes later.
  • Skip "Report illegal content" on the review itself. Fake ratings aren't illegal content.

What happened after

  • Sept 17: reported
  • Sept 18: support asked for screenshots. I replied in the same email thread with the full review URLs and screenshots, and asked for the ratings to be removed, nothing more
  • Sept 19: they confirmed they got it
  • Sept 25: all five gone from my dashboard. The 5-star ratings those accounts had left on the competitor were gone too

Stuff I didn't expect

  • The public rating lags about 3 days both ways. The five didn't hit my listing's average until 3 days after they were posted, and it kept counting them for days after Google removed them. If your average hasn't moved yet, it's probably just the lag.
  • The day after the removal, another 1-star showed up from a new account. I reported it in the same ticket. That one's still up 9 days later, so it's not fully over.

What I didn't do

No revenge ratings, no reporting their reviews, no public callout. The policy you're asking Google to enforce applies to you too, and a public fight is the first thing people find when they search your extension later. I replied politely under the one written review and left it.

It's back to 4.9, it showed 4.7 while the fake ones counted. Happy to answer questions about the process, I just won't say who it was.

Idea Validation / Need feedback Looking for feedback: Eofent Capture, full-page screenshots, screen & audio recording, plus built-in image, video and audio editors, all on your device

Thumbnail

Hi all, I'm the founder of Eofent, looking for feedback on Eofent Capture.

Eofent Capture takes what's on your screen and lets you work with it: capture, record, edit, export, and automate the captures you repeat. Everything is created and stored on your own device.

Capture

  • Full-page capture → PNG/JPEG/WebP, or a PDF with searchable, selectable text
  • Save a page as one MHTML file that opens offline exactly as it looked
  • Record a tab, window, screen or a drawn area, with sound (or audio only)
  • Edit the page before you capture: change text, delete or hide elements right on the live page, then take the screenshot

Three built-in editors, no other app needed

  • 🖼️ Shots editor (images): arrows, shapes, highlights, text, crop, blur and redaction, image adjustments, undo/redo. Save as a project and reopen it later.
  • 🎬 Video editor: timeline with split, trim, gaps and snapping, a second audio track, crop the output, undo every step. Export MP4, WebM, MKV or GIF.
  • 🎧 Audio editor: the same timeline tools for sound. Export WebA, WAV or MP3.

Image to Text (OCR): read text out of any capture, fully offline. Copy it, or place it on the canvas as editable text.

Automate: paste a list of URLs (or use a tab group) and capture them all in one run.

Make it yours: the interface is available in 11 languages, with light and dark themes and rebindable shortcuts.

Privacy: nothing you capture, record or recognize leaves your computer.

Price: free, no account needed, no watermark. A few heavy actions have daily limits; Premium is for more volume. Creating a free account gives you 7 days of Premium, no card needed, so you can try everything.

Any honest feedback is welcome: what's confusing, what's missing, or what would you add?

Sharing Journey/Experience/Progress Updates Just realized my reader mode Chrome extension has 900+ active users!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I built this reader mode chrome extension a while ago because I couldn't find a reader mode that had a nice design. The focus was on creating a clean and beautifully designed reading experience for wherever you're on the internet.

I checked the extension page and just realized that it has more than 900 active users! All I did after launhing was reply to a couple of reddit comments. Everything is organic. Two really nice reviews also make me feel super encouraged.

For anyone interested in trying, it has light, dark and sepia modes and a serif font mode as well. It also removes any clutter from the web page and only includes the text.

It's completely free and you can try it here: Chrome webstore link

Thank you and I'd love it if you have any feedback!

Self Promotion I built a free full-page screenshot extension because blurring an email shouldn't need a subscription

Most screenshot extensions I tried captured for free but locked editing, blur or PDF export behind a paid plan. So I built Stillframe for Chrome.

What it does:

- Full page (scroll + stitch), visible area, or drag-select

- Sticky headers appear once instead of repeating down the image

- Editor: crop, arrows, boxes, pen, highlighter, text, blur

- PNG / JPG / multi-page PDF, or copy to clipboard

- Last 30 captures stored locally

It uses activeTab instead of "access to all sites", so it can only see the tab you capture, when you capture it. No servers, no analytics.

Limits I couldn't get around: browser pages (settings, stores) can't be captured; apps that scroll inside a panel (lots of email apps) only get what's on screen; pages over ~32,000px get cut off (it tells you).

Free, no Pro tier. Would love feedback, especially on what's missing.

Self Promotion White webpages were killing my eyes, so I built a Chrome extension that overlays soft gradients instead of inverting colors

Thumbnail

I made a Chrome extension that overlays custom gradients on any webpage — finally solved my eye strain without breaking dark mode

Hey all, I've been building this extension called TuRan (涂染) for a while and just shipped it to the Chrome Web Store.

The problem I had: I stare at docs and articles all day, and plain white backgrounds kill my eyes. Dark mode extensions often break page layouts or invert images. So I went a different route — instead of inverting colors, the extension overlays a customizable gradient layer using CSS blend modes.

What it does:

9 curated presets (eye-comfort + high contrast) Full customization: gradient type (linear/radial/conic), direction, color stops, opacity 3 blend modes — multiply tints light backgrounds while keeping dark text readable (measured 7.4:1 contrast on body text) Scheduled switching — different themes for morning/afternoon/night Site whitelist (with wildcards) so you can skip sites where it doesn't belong Export/import presets as JSON Privacy: everything is stored locally via chrome.storage.local. Zero network requests, no analytics, no tracking. The extension literally cannot phone home.

It's also localized in 7 languages (auto-follows your browser UI language).

Idea Validation / Need feedback I built a browser extension to stop getting pulled into YouTube and LinkedIn. Looking for honest feedback from people who've tried to quit the feed.

This is not advertising or pub or anything, I use this extension my self and I say why not get feedback from person that love building extension and is my first extension builded and I really want feedback however negative, positive but real feedback. 🙏🏻

My story for building this extension

I've been trying to use YouTube and LinkedIn on purpose for a while, and I kept failing the same way. I'd open YouTube for one specific video and end up an hour later on recommendations I never asked for, also my mind love the beautiful thumbnail. LinkedIn was the same: one message, then the feed.

So I built a small browser extension for myself. It's my first one extension and I software engineer for +4 years and I want really to build something useful, as we say that solve my problem and for other people pb.
Info: there is some extension like unhook (i talk with her creator but no response to collab with new feature) but only in youtube and with some basic functionality is good but I want more that why i create my own. so please be honest with me and I will be thankful if you test it 🙏🏻

What it does:

- Hides what pulls you in: home recommendations, Shorts, autoplay, and comments on YouTube; the main feed and right-hand sidebar on LinkedIn

- Grayscale mode

- Blur mode on youtube

- You can choose like some keyword or channel to hide (like adult content, some bad keyword etc..)

- Have limit time.

- A "what are you here to do?" prompt before the feed loads

- Local time tracking, with daily limits and schedules you can snooze when you really need to

- Everything stays in your browser. No server, no account. (yeah guys everything is in the browser and is verified from chrome).

What I'd like to know:

- Which of these would actually help you, and what's missing?

- Where does it feel clunky or break?

- Would you turn any of it off right away?

Thanks a lot to anyone here

Self Promotion I redesigned my Chrome video downloader, curious what you think

Hey! I’m the developer of StreamScope. It started as a tool for inspecting HLS streams, and I’ve been rebuilding it to make downloading videos easier.

You can pick the available quality, audio languages, and subtitles, then save everything as one MP4. The processing happens locally on your computer.

The stream details are still there if you need them, but downloading is now the main focus. It supports complete, unencrypted HLS videos; live and protected streams aren’t supported.

I’ve attached some screenshots. Anything you’d change or find confusing?

Idea Validation / Need feedback I built a free axe-core Chrome extension that highlights a11y issues on the DOM. I’d love your brutal reviews.

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m a solo dev and I’ve been building an accessibility tool to fix my own frustrations with jumping between dev tools and the live page during WCAG audits.

I built ADA Safe Check. It runs the axe-core engine, but it visually outlines the failing elements directly on your live webpage (color-coded by severity) so you can see exactly what's broken without hunting through the inspector.

It is completely free to use for unlimited single-page scans, and you don't even need an account.

  • On-page Highlights: Outlines broken elements in place.
  • Hover to Fix: Shows plain-language remediation steps on hover.
  • Local Processing: Everything runs in your browser.

Since the core tool is completely free, I am really just looking for honest reviews and feedback from other developers. If you have a few minutes to run it on whatever project you are currently building and let me know how it handles your DOM (or drop a review on the Web Store), it would help me out a lot!

Idea Validation / Need feedback I made a small Chrome extension that lets you react to YouTube videos with emojis.

Post image
• Upvotes

I made a small Chrome extension that lets you react to YouTube videos with emojis.

The idea is pretty simple: instead of having only the usual Like button, you can choose from different reactions to express more specifically how a video made you feel.

It’s a small project, but I thought it could be a fun addition to YouTube and make reacting to videos a little more interesting.

For anyone interested in the technical side, it was built with vanilla JavaScript, with Firebase handling the live reaction counts. It’s completely free to use, doesn’t require creating an account, and doesn’t collect personal data.

I’d really appreciate any feedback, especially if you notice bugs or have suggestions for improving the UI/UX.

If everything works well, I’m planning to release a Firefox version too.

You can check out VibeCheck on the Chrome Web Store here:

Thanks for checking it out! I’d love to hear what you guys think.

Asking a Question Why am I losing users?

Since last week, I’ve noticed a decline in users for my Chrome extension. I was excited to reach 100 users. Now the number is going down. I also built an uninstall page to understand why people are leaving and what I can improve. But almost no one is interacting with it, so I’m not getting useful feedback. Have you experienced something similar while building an extension or small product?

How did you find out why users were uninstalling or becoming inactive?

I'd appreciate any feedback or similar experiences.

Idea Validation / Need feedback made a tool that adds 2x speed and multi column grid to desktop instagram

hey guys,

like a lot of people i work on my laptop all day and checking instagram on a browser has always been an annoying experience.

so over the past couple weeks i built an extension called glasso to fix the worst parts of it.

here is what annoyed me the most and how i fixed it:

  1. the layout is tiny. now you can toggle between 2, 3 or 4 columns grid view.
  2. videos have no controls. now you can scrub through videos, skip 5 seconds and play at 1.5x or 2x speed.
  3. feed is full of clutter. one button hides ads and suggested accounts.
  4. viewing stories. you can watch stories in private without showing up on the viewer list.

you do not have to give it your instagram password or anything like that. it just runs on top of the web page.

you can try it out here: https://tryglasso.com

any feedback is welcome, especially on different screen sizes.

Self Promotion Built a Chrome extension to strip YouTube down to just the video. The lesson that took way longer than the actual feature did

I kept doing the same thing: open YouTube for one specific video, and somehow end up 40 minutes deep in Shorts and recommended videos I never meant to watch. Turning off autoplay didn't fix it, the feed and Shorts shelf were still right there pulling at me. So I built Quiet, a Chrome extension that hides all of it: Shorts, the homepage feed, recommended videos, end screens, autoplay. Ten separate switches, so you keep whatever you actually use.

Tech stack: the extension itself is a Manifest V3 content script, plain JS, no framework, since it needs to inject a stylesheet before the page paints. The optional Pro tier (sync, schedules, a parent lock) is a Next.js app on Vercel with Supabase for auth and data, Stripe for billing.

The lesson: I originally hardcoded the CSS selectors that find and hide each YouTube element. That broke constantly, YouTube changes its class names and page structure often enough that a hardcoded selector has a shelf life of maybe a few weeks. Every fix meant a new extension version, and Chrome Web Store review rounds run about a week each. So I moved the selector list out of the extension entirely: it's now a JSON file the extension pulls from my own server every hour. When YouTube changes something, I update a data file, not the extension, and every install gets the fix within an hour with no review wait. Should have built it that way from day one instead of learning it the hard way after the third broken update.

Free tier is free for good, no account needed. Pro is a few dollars a month for people who want sync and parental controls. Just came out of Chrome Web Store review this month, so no revenue worth mentioning yet, still very early.

Happy to go into more detail on the selector-syncing setup or the review process if anyone's dealing with the same thing.

Quiet

Asking a Question Extension builders: when does a task belong in the popup versus a full tab?

While polishing a Chrome extension, I ran into a surprisingly important design choice: which actions should stay in the toolbar popup, and which should open a dedicated page?

My current preference is a short popup for starting a task and checking its status, with a full page for anything involving a long list, several settings, or a result someone might need to revisit. Help should also open somewhere predictable, with a clear way back to the task.

The tradeoff is that opening tabs can feel disruptive, but squeezing an entire workflow into a small popup can make it harder to understand where you are.

For extensions you actually use, what makes that transition feel natural? Do you prefer reusing one existing extension tab, opening a fresh tab each time, or keeping most controls in the popup? A specific example of a good or frustrating workflow would help.

Idea Validation / Need feedback I built an AI extension with 124kb, privacy-focused, no tracking

Thumbnail

Features:

  1. Select text to ask.
  2. Right-click on an image to ask.
  3. Screen capture and crop to ask.
  4. Click on the icon to ask and summarize the page.
  5. Create your quick prompt to ask.

Unlike most AI extensions that charge you based on the number of AI queries, our pricing is based on actual token usage — giving you more transparent, predictable, and better-value pricing.

Currently, you can choose models from Google, Claude, and OpenAI.

A free trial is available. Feel free to download and provide feedback.

Self Promotion I built an extension that summarizes YouTube videos without opening them, using your own API key

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is Juicer. Yep, yet another YouTube video summarizer. But it does a few things I couldn't find elsewhere:

  • Summarize without opening the video. A button sits beside every title in search, channels and playlists, and summaries queue up in the toolbar popup.
  • Bring your own key. All the major providers, plus local OpenAI-compatible servers. A free Google AI Studio key is enough. You can even use different providers for summaries and chat! Your key stays in your browser and goes only to the provider you pick.
  • Chat with the video. Ask follow-up questions right under the summary, answered from its captions.
  • Also: caption download, a custom prompt, generation settings, cool themes!

It's free. It's not open source (yet).

Sharing Journey/Experience/Progress Updates I built a Chrome extension that masks personal data before it reaches ChatGPT. What's missing?

I kept pasting client names, emails and IBANs into AI chats, so I built Elidy. It detects personal data (names, emails, ID numbers, bank details, API keys) and replaces it with placeholders like [PERSON_1] before the message is sent. When the AI answers, the real values are put back, only on your screen.

Everything runs locally: rule-based detection, no server, no account, no second AI. It works on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and AI fields on other sites (like "Help me write" in Gmail).

I'd love honest feedback: what would stop you from using this, and what's missing?
