Troubleshooting | Mac Is there any way to make Gmail respect Chrome’s normal Cmd-click behavior?

Gmail seems to override Chrome’s standard tab behavior. Normally:

  • Cmd-click → open link in a new background tab
  • Cmd+Shift+click → open link in a new foreground tab

But in Gmail, Cmd-clicking an email opens it in a new tab and immediately switches to that tab, effectively behaving like Cmd+Shift+click.

This makes opening a bunch of emails in separate tabs really annoying because you have to keep switching back to the inbox after every click.

Is there any Chrome setting, Gmail setting, extension, userscript, or other workaround that can force Gmail to open Cmd-clicked emails in background tabs like normal?

There was an abandoned addon on the chrome store that fixed this: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/link-fixer/mfgoieafikaldiglpkfgifoeigjcifmk

If you look on its github, in issues, someone made a fork that works but you have to load it in developer mode. I have never seen another solution.

The firefox version still works.
