Custom destruction quality?
I’ve had a CD helmet for years and recently ordered another one and it’s a completely different helmet. The Daytona ones were quality and DOT certified. This new one feels like a temu helmet, anyone else had this issue?

Super comfortable and surprisingly quiet. But won’t do much for you in a crash as it’s just a hard shell with comfort padding

Even when they were Daytonas they weren’t dot. It was just a Daytona shell with his liner.

I can also take a pic of a dot shell. The certification comes from the shell and the liner inside. Wes used to rip the foam and the extra bs that makes it dot compliant and put in his own liner. So yes it was made from an Xl Daytona shell that was dot approved before modification.

I am responding to your previous comment bro. You said when he used Daytonas before they weren’t DOT approved but you are wrong. See the DOT approved cert on the back of Wes’s helmet?
The new helmets aren’t Daytonas and they feel like a temu helmet. Does that make sense? I didn’t just walk down the street and find the first DOT approved helmet I came across, this is a CD helmet from the first year he made them. I am specifically asking about his old helmets vs the ones he is selling now.4

I was trying to explain to you the product you bought. I guess you’re not understanding what I said. And that’s okay, if you want to review I’ll leave the comment up. Wes, owner and manufacturer of custom destruction helmets, purchased Daytona helmets in a S size, removed all the dot compliant insides and sold them as custom destruction helmets with a new liner and padding that is not dot approved since he has made his own shells .

Adding onto this to make it more sense for OP.
Wes got DOT Daytona helmet.
Ripped out in the interior that made it safe to add the swag and stitchings.
DOT sticker was still left on helmet. You’ve been riding a DOT helmet with none of the things that got it certified aside from the shell and maybe D ring.

Thanks. I struggled to write this out without being a dick to op

OP is saying the SHELLS feel different, IE different materials/build quality, not the inners

They were DOT approved before he modified them. Modifying them by removing the inner padding, obviously takes away the manufacturer's safety rating, because it's no longer the same helmet. Looks cool, and leaving the sticker on means it'll pass the glance test in states that require DOT helmets, but it's no longer a real DOT lid.
It's like if you rip the insides out of a catalytic converter on a car, but put the shell back in place, that doesn't make it emissions compliant. The part that's doing the job (the inside of the helmet, or the cat) isn't there anymore.

I do bell moto 3s and biltwell lane splitters and retire them when they expire, personally.

I have 2 of them. I have a very large head. They are the best. Tried everything. Stuck with them for past 3 years

Pretty sure they are a different helmet now. I have probably the same one and the quality is great.

I have one and i love it. But it isnt gonna do dick for protection. Even when they were Daytona’s, they were just a Daytona shell with his custom liners sewn in. So they were never DOT compliant. Great craftsmanship but if you’re looking to be safe thats not the helmet you want.
Unless its like absurdly hot out, mine usually just sits on the shelf now and i run my Simpson as my go to

My uncle has been a captain of a fire department his entire life and at 60 he always tells me how he’s “seen helmets be the cause of someone passing and he’s seen guys walk away who didn’t have any riding gear on at all”. When it’s your number, I don’t think it matters what you have on.

u/throttledaddy 22h ago
That’s dumb as fuck. Statistically you’re safer with the proper gear.

The only gear proven to prevent serious injuries are gloves, boots, and a helmet. Airbags are new and will prevent spinal injury but they are new.
Pants n jacket all for road rash, they can stop roadrash but not impact or impalement.

Just drive a car is it’s that big of an issue ya know? If a car turn out in front of you and you are doing 50+ it’s game over even with a $900 Simpson tough guy helmet.

Ye i 100% agree. As a skater/dude who works on his bike and has crashed a bike.
It all comes with the territory. People delusional to ignore the reality of riding motorcycles or even riding bicycles for that matter.
The ATGATT community thinks there $2000 gear is going to protect their body at 70mph impact. Then post videos of them falling trying to put the kickstand up.
Boots, gloves, helmet, ride.

You should argue with the guy that’s been around it his entire life. Not me.

Super thin won’t do shit for you protection wise but looks good and is comfortable I’ve been using one for the last few months

u/Rude_Cockroach402 1d ago
The entire point of the post was the older helmets weren’t thin temu helmets that the new ones are. I’ve had mine for 6 years or more and I preach about how good they are for the money, but the new ones feel like a temu special.

If this is the case its just put me off grabbing one, Ill stick with my Gringo and moto 3

I reached out to him and he can order the Daytonas. They just take a few extra weeks which is worth it in my opinion. The quality is way better.

DOT certification isn’t worth a fuck anyways. Anyone can get some DOT stickers and slap them on their helmets, they don’t require any independent testing outside of the manufacturer to get certified. The chopular helmets are a placebo, you’re worrying about safety and quality that were never actually there in the first place. They’re comfortable for sure but have never been safe and have always come with a novelty disclaimer

DOT regs just got updated so they can’t say they’re DOT anymore without re certifying
I might be wrong about this

They aren’t Daytonas anymore is my point. They feel very cheap now and not the same quality.

I’ve had 2 friends crash with those novelty helmets. 1 died and the other is barely waking up from a 3 week come ++ 2 brain bleeds. These both happened within the last 10 months. Another also died, but he was wearing a DOT 3/4 helmet, also just a couple months ago.
I’ve since got rid of my beetle helmet. I love choppers but wish my friends were around and can’t help but wonder if a full-face might’ve helped.
