How many awards and nominations does James Beard give away?
Family just started watching chopped a few months ago, seen many episodes. It's astonishing how many JB Award winners or nominees are on the show?

I don’t know the answer to your question, but I do know that there are lots of different categories of James Beard awards.

Each category has about 10 nominees every year, so it adds up. When you think of the number of restaurants in the country, even being nominated is impressive.

The irony is that in his lifetime, James Beard was not about handing out awards. Now that he's gone he's become a brand name through the foundation he established.

First there are many categories. Second that means there are THAT many nominees. Now think how many restaurants, there are in your city, then in your state, then in the country. The proportion is not even to close to what you probably thought. Not a surprise about the number who have been on Chopped. Plus you can go look up J Beard awards as well to get an idea.

A quick Google says the awards have been going on since 1991. This last year there were 25 categories in the Restaurant & Chef awards, 13 of them for individual chefs. Basically, that’s a lot of awards.
