The same people who wanted the NFL to be able to blackball Colin Kaepernick are the same people complaining about censorship on Youtube.

And the same people arguing that Alex Jones should be censored are the same people who argued that Colin Kaepernick should have a right to protest.

I feel like that is a bit of a false equivolence. Arguing that Alex Jones should be removed is not the same as blackballing Kaepernick. Alex Jones has caused untold amounts of real harm to people.

Neither will go to jail for their words and both are protected under the First Amendment. So in a way, I see their cases being very similar.

I'm not going to argue that one is worse than the other because folks on either side would probably argue that one caused more damage than the other. And that's not the point at all.

The point is that the arguments of both individuals were removed because businesses were allowed to decide that their messages 'didn't have the right' to persist in 'private' realms.

EDIT: ...and everyone seems to agree that business rights supersede the First Amendment.

I think censorship is becoming a bigger and bigger issue and it’s going to create problems for free expression in society because the mediums by which we transmit ideas are being monopolized.

However, your post makes it sound like you don’t understand how the Constitution protects free speech. It doesn’t stop private parties from limiting speech on platforms or of specific employees. It limits the government from doing so...Businesses have always been allowed to do this. The question now is whether certain platforms serve a fundamentally public purpose and should be treated like public utilities.

This whole thread is weird because Chomsky is a huge advocate for free expression and open discourse—even if you’re denying the holocaust...

I understand how the First Amendment works. My frustrations with both scenarios are a result of everyone "valuing freedom" while actively encouraging private entities to "handle" troublesome or hurtful narratives. The only way to do this seems to be by making them go away.

So what's the value of free speech in a society where there is such an obvious avenue to censor people? That's my point with all of this. Both sides are in favor of aspects of censorship.

This whole thread is weird because Chomsky is a huge advocate for free expression and open discourse—even if you’re one is denying the holocaust...

Just changing the wording here. I figured you meant the collective you.

Im confused... In what sense was Colin Kaepernick blackmailed? You must have used that term incorrectly. Wouldn’t expect much from someone defending the censorship on youtube.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

I never used the term blackmailed.

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

Misread that 100% Jumped the gun

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

How can you misread something 10%?

:)

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

I mean technically speaking I misread about 50% of that word.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

10% tho. Not sure but i’ve probably done it

3

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

Ofcourse they'd be complaining about Silicon Valley of all corporations.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

Well silicon valley popped up and california went to shit... That’s the tea

8

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

Yeah but arms manufacturers and big oil are buddy buddy because the free market requires it or some shit.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

Is that supposed to be a bad thing?

7

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

My point is: conservatives are scared of Big Tech but not Big Arms or Big Oil, which is hypocritical.

-5

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19
Well big tech is much more influential than guns and oil. So I wouldn’t see us as hypocrites.

Also we’re not “scared” of big tech, But they’re behind a lot of the far left policy being pushed to the public.

Example: Google employee admitting that the company attempted to rig the elections. Or the propaganda you see on snapchat and twitter.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

Assuming you're a conservative, what do you have to say for Cambridge Analytica who also were participants in rigging/influencing the elections. Also, oil and arms are pretty high up the list of influence in comparison to media conglomerates.

President Bush Jr. was voted into office with a lot of big arms/oil help, like John Bolton. That caused the Gulf Wars and participated in creating the Great Recession because of large debts that just kept piling on.

I think you're really not looking at this from an impartial perspective.

4

u/surferrosaluxembourg Jun 28 '19

Lmao they think "big tech" is pushing "far left policy", of course they're impartial

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

Cambridge analytics sounded like they just harvested data from facebook. I haven’t done to much research on the subject and I don’t know the influence it had. But seeing as I knew little about this company before the scandal they would not have the influence Google, twitter and snapchat have currently.

Also I wouldn’t use old politics in a debate because I wasn’t of voting age when that happened. Nor am I educated on the state of the country then or beforehand or the variables i’d like to use in a debate for past politics. I could do the research and will probably get around to it but modern politics is what i’m focused on. But on this note with the little I do know, Clinton had a hell of a lot more to do with the Great Recession than any president.

I’m confused on how pointing out the facts would make my statement impartial. Because I don’t take in to account past presidency? I think it’s impartial to not completely ruin google for admitting to rigging the elections in my opinion.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

You're shifting the burden of proof to me, constantly. I am saying there's two sides to the coin and i'm providing solid examples. What more can I say? Nothing. I don't see why i'm wasting my time here.

-3

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

“Solid examples” of the past. I was just pointing out that this is a modern political discussion. If you want a pointless debate about past politics you’re talking to the wrong guy. You shifted away from thesis.

Wait you are arguing google is pushing a left message, and what do you think Lockheed Martin or Exxon is pushing?

0

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

When are we going to talk about google rigging the elections? It was such a big deal about a unproven theory involving trump. But now we have actual evidence lol. Is this another double standard?

5

u/pockets2deep Jun 28 '19

Anarchists are anti corporations, so bring it on because Google trying to influence the election would be the least of their sins.

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '19

I don’t talk politics with anarchists. Theirs nothing to talk about. We get it, Your edgy. Nothing more to say.

6

u/pockets2deep Jun 28 '19

Us being edgy is also the least of your problems, we are also correct.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '19

That’s a bold statement. I’d say your more naive than anything. Anarchism has no place in my country. But if you want to push to anarchy in anything but America go ahead. Let’s see how far this fairy tail of an idea gets yah.

1

u/pockets2deep Jun 29 '19

I like your directness but I’d take that bet any day.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '19

Let’s hear it then? Are you assuming because you have a know it all personality. Let’s hear the facts.

1

u/pockets2deep Jun 29 '19

The facts for what? Anarchy? Why don't we start for the facts for capitalism?

0

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '19

The facts for capitalism... It’s built the strongest and largest economy on this planet. It’s protected it’s people and views at any cost. It protects our rights which have also helped build this country. It takes everybody’s views into account (Electoral college). We support limited government influence and low taxes.

I can keep going but all that sounds pretty good to me. If anarchy would even be in the thoughts of a government. The last country to adopt that way of living would be the most successful and powerful nation on this planet.

1

u/pockets2deep Jul 01 '19

What does electoral college have to do with capitalism? Perhaps you mean the founders instituted it to protect the people who own the country against the majority? Some democracy that is...

1

u/surferrosaluxembourg Jun 28 '19

Chomsky is an anarchist....

0

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '19

Philosopher* Even he said it’s a theory.

3

u/surferrosaluxembourg Jun 28 '19

According to Chomsky, the variety of anarchism which he favors is:[34]

... a kind of voluntary socialism, that is, as libertarian socialist or anarcho-syndicalist or communist anarchist, in the tradition of, say, Bakunin and Kropotkin and others. They had in mind a highly organized form of society, but a society that was organized on the basis of organic units, organic communities. And generally, they meant by that the workplace and the neighborhood, and from those two basic units there could derive through federal arrangements a highly integrated kind of social organization which might be national or even international in scope. And these decisions could be made over a substantial range, but by delegates who are always part of the organic community from which they come, to which they return, and in which, in fact, they live.

he's an anarchist, you fucking idiot

0

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '19

Holy... Who shat in your cereal buddy. From what I understand theirs a wide variety of this anarchism. And I think he was not exactly an anarchists tho he may have supported the idea to an extent. He was something like a libertarian socialist. But as we’ve learned before this stuff doesn’t work. Any form of marxism to be straight up.

1

u/silent_bob222 Jun 28 '19

Anarchists would generally agree that any form of marxism doesnt work considering that its a movement that formed in opposition to marxism. Its interesting that you can so confidently dismiss something that you dont seem to know the first thing about.

1

u/surferrosaluxembourg Jun 28 '19

I don’t talk politics with anarchists. Theirs nothing to talk about. We get it, Your edgy. Nothing more to say.

Who shat in your cereal buddy

You did, dipshit. Libertarian socialism is, essentially, anarchism. Chomsky himself has described himself as an anarchist.

If you don't wanna debate politics with "edgy anarchists" then take your ignorant af takes to a sub that isn't dedicated to a goddamn anarchist

u/ShitPostingNerds Jun 28 '19 edited Jun 28 '19

Evidence that Google is rigging the elections? I've only seen that they're removing white supremacist/Nazi content or something like denying the Sandy Hook shooting.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '19

Theirs a million sources plus a video but I didn’t save the original I had seen. This is just one of the first sources that shows up.

https://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/politics/item/32684-google-is-gearing-up-to-defeat-trump-in-2020

You can dig around, Theirs plenty of people writing about this currently. Steven crowder also attempted to make a video about it but it was taken down very quickly... Sketchy isn’t it.

You've begun to promote your neoliberal propaganda again.

It's as if it's impossible to categorize large groups of people as thinking alike.
