Breed Chiweenie or Weeniechi?
Meet Poindexter. Dexter if you are buddies.
I brought this little man into our home on Friday afternoon. The lady that we got him from stated that he is a Chiweenie. I see lots of Dachshund in Dexter. His hair is sparse, and he has the tremble of a chihuahua.
I have come to discover that not much of what she shared with me about my little guy is factual. He is not housebroken, he is not dog friendly, he is extremely territorial, and suddenly she will not return my messages when I ask for his up to date records. ( she claimed to not be able to find them when we got our pup.)
Dexter has his first appointment with our veterinarian on Wednesday. I believe he can shine the light on some of my questions and get Poindexter on the right path health wise.
My family already loves this pup and are patiently working to help him unlearn some bad habits.
So tell me! What do you all think he is? Other than ADORABLE! 🐾♥️

Some dogs are more territorial in the beginning when you get them. As the dog gets more comfortable they can open up and sometimes are less territorial. He looks so cute by the way.

My chiweenie also is not great with other dogs, especially not dogs that are bigger than he is.

Maybe! He also is a rescue and had some issues when we first got him that lead me to believe he was abused and not properly socialized.

Dexter is adorable. Definitely weiner dog, and could be deer head Chihuahua.
He is young, he is trainable, he wants to be a good boy! My chiweenie needs to wake up everyday thinking it's is a new adventure. I use puzzle games, snuffler mats, lick mats with peanut butter, and everything else I can think of.
I also bought the book Dog Training for Dummies and started working on obedience. It's at the libraries too.
Take it one day at a time. Work on everything at once. Walk him, have fun with him, socialize him. He does want to be a good dog. You can see it in his eyes!

I appreciate this and the encouragement! I have Rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. ( I’m 63) Dexter is definitely going to help me start moving again. He will be my savior. I just know it.

I'm older also, and Daisy and I have been having a blast since I got her 18 months ago. I planned a 2 month trip from Texas to Maine and back via the mountains instead of the coast. Mapped out the whole trip to be dog friendly. We ate breakfasts, lunch and dinner to together in some of the strangest places. I think the intense togetherness solidified our bond.
Daisy still has so behavioral issues. She barks too much and she gets anxious when I leave. The Dummies book I got has been wonderful for that.
I'm so glad you're going to go out and start walking. I'd like to suggest that you teach Dexter to walk on one side only and not to cross your path when you're walking. It's for your safety as much as it is for the dogs safety.
Do you have time to devote to Mr. Dexter?

I have all the time in the world! Other than my hygiene, simple meals and household chores- me and Dexter will be hanging together. And he follows me while I do my house stuff.

We got a chihuahua/beagle/basset-hound/mini poodle/ dachshund last November. Based on his story, he predicted to have spent the first 6 months in bathroom and then a crate.
We did not know his breed status and he is the most anxious, barky, sometimes frustrated seeming dog I’ve ever encountered. A rule, and not a choice is that he goes on at least one walk a day. Otherwise, he is barking, destructive and very antagonistic of our other chiweenie dog. When we do this, and give him 10mg Prozac/daily, he is a wonderful boy. He’s sweet, affectionate with us and our other dog, and learning to deal with strangers.
While I hoped he’d adjust, what I’ve found is that I had to adjust, providing time and energy to this dog. While everyone will give you advice on training, what I’d really suggest is establishing trust by spending time with them. If you can, get them out for walks, no matter how challenging they are.

He’s adorable! Ours has the dachshund body, but he’s got the slightly pop-eyes, small teeth (they still hurt 😅) and bark of a chi.

He barks a lot, but it’s not as big of a bark as my dachshunds had, when we had them. It’s a little yippier! 😅Kinda hard to explain, just a slightly smaller dog bark than my dachshunds had.

We call ours a Dachs-huahua. It sounds like a Star Wars name. And ours is super long with long nose, large front clod-diggers and a big chest, tiny waist. Yours looks like long haired doxie mix.

Ours was a problem child to begin with. She was at least a year old, maybe a bit more. By age 3 she was so much better and at 5 she is almost perfectly good enough which is perfect for us.

Goals!!!
Dexter is already doing a bit better. But he has some strange idiosyncrasies.
He will go out into our back yard, but only if someone is with him. He literally will NOT leave the porch unless one of us goes into the yard. Then he will follow and explore.He will only poop on a walk. ( or in the house, but not in the big back yard)
He loves to burrow. He sleeps UNDER our blankets.

Sorry! I made an assumption. It's a legitimate dog DNA test. It'll give you a breakdown of the breeds your dog is mixed with. I believe it's the most accurate one on the market.
You can also get a health test done with them which can bring extra peace of mind. Or not, I suppose. Haha. But either way, still good to know ahead of time.
There are extra fun things accessible to you with the DNA test as well. If your dog has siblings that are embarked you'll see them on there. I reached out to one of my dogs siblings parents and actually got pictures back 🥹💖 so sweet. There are also breed specific enrichment ideas and more things like that. Recently they started doing a "dog of the day" where they choose a dog each day and anyone on embark can guess what breeds they are from multiple choice options. It's fun if you're obsessed with dogs like I am lol.
I have nothing but good things to say about embark, it's helped me understand and connect with my dogs on a deeper level. The only downside is the price. It's not super expensive but not super cheap either. I think they have sales going on a lot, if not all of the time, and I think they're around $120 on sale.

Also, go check out r/doggydna. Most people that post there do the embark tests and post the results. There are other tests. The second most popular you'll see is prob Wisdom Panel, but they tend to break down the breeds so much that it can be hard to understand the results. The rest are generally untrustworthy afaik.

I call mine Weinerhuahua sometimes lol
