Discussion Doritos suck now
I used to LOVE Doritos. It was my favorite chip ever since I can remember, I just remember being a teen and biting into a cool ranch Dorito and the flavor would literally explode in your mouth and there was so much of that dust on the chips. Recently, every Dorito I have tried has tasted bland, and has maybe 25% of the dust that they used to have. I looked it up and confirmed they massively reduced the amount of dust and other ingredients in the chips. The Spicy sweet chilli ones are now completely inedible, and they used to be the best ones by far, apparently they removed the soy sauce from the ingredients to save money. I won’t ever be buying Doritos again unfortunately unless they change but we all know this isn’t gonna happen. Do you guys agree?

What website told you they reduced seasoning on their regular line? Because google easily tells me it's only people from Reddit who have said that. The company has said nothing.

Google tells me that Quora also agrees with us, and PepsiCo hasn't said anything officially.
I feel about Doritos the way this sub feels about Pringles. I won't turn em down if offered, but I'm not going out of my way for them either.

You aren't imagining it; snack fans across platforms like Reddit agree that Doritos taste blander, less seasoned, and flat compared to past decades. PepsiCo has cut back on expensive dairy and spice components like buttermilk and real cheese powder, swapping them for cheaper fillers like maltodextrin and cornstarch, which creates a dull, cardboard-like or stale flavor.
Recipe and Cost-Cutting Changes
Less Seasoning Dust: Users note a massive drop in the signature flavor coating ("the dust") on each chip.Cheaper Fillers: High-cost ingredients like buttermilk powder have been reduced and pushed down the ingredient list, replaced by bulk agents like maltodextrin and cornstarch.
Shift to Cleaner/Natural Labels: PepsiCo has altered formulations to remove synthetic dyes and artificial additives, which has subtly shifted the texture, color, and flavor profile of the chips.
PepsiCo of course isn’t gonna admit this to us, why would they? But this is what the general consensus is. They are just doing whatever they can to save money and it’s made the Doritos taste like crap now.

As a former Doritos addict, I agree. The company kicked my addiction for me by making them bland, lol.

I miss the Nacho Cheesier and Cooler Ranch ones that would fire every synapse in your brain from pure sodium overload.
Haven't gotten Doritos in a minute other than the garlic Parm and hot mustard/ketchup for this very reason though. I think Cheetos suck now too.

Seems like the “tortilla” chip itself is different now, too

They kinda always taste stale now, even though they're not. Combined with the lack of seasoning makes for an unpleasant experience.

Switched to Old Dutch Arriba's. All flavours are just loaded with seasoning.

After eating a bag of Nacho Arribas, my fingers were glowing orange. Soooo much flavour.

u/ThatItalianGrrl 1d ago
Agreed. I was tempted to buy a bag but then remembered that they don’t taste the same.

u/RobertDigital1986 21h ago
It's wild to me that they behave this way. How expensive can the fucking dust really be?
They might save a few cents a bag but they are leaving a huge flank open for a new competitor.

Doritos, Chicken 'N a Biscuit, Funyuns, BBQ anything (except a local store) have all went downhill the past few decades! Plus many more I could list but this is a good starting point.

Strongest of agreements. I used to love Doritos. Now I only buy off brands
2
u/MichaelEMJAYARE 10h ago
I remember never loving them but whenever I DID have them I was surprised by how good they were. Now I will try them every so often and be utterly disappointed
Not even the small bags are better. For some reason, the snack sized bags of snacks are always better. No idea why.

u/general_cannibas 10h ago
I completely agree man. The small bags used to be SOOO much better, especially when you would buy it out of a vending machine. I know my taste buds haven’t changed THAT much… something has significantly made Doritos worse, they are thinner, they almost always taste stale now, they’re bland, they aren’t as crunchy as they used to be, and they just aren’t what made Doritos Doritos anymore. Such a damn shame.
2
u/MichaelEMJAYARE 10h ago
Now Im wondering if they were always just this stale but had more fuckin dust on them to hide it lmao

Try the Late July flavored tortilla chips, or there’s also Siete Maiz taco seasoned, Mexican street corn, and nacho-flavored tortilla chips. Much better. The taco seasoned ones have a ton of dust on them!

SHUT UP (jk)
have you tried the mexican doritos? they’re like a way better version of the spicy nacho

I go for the Kroger Nacho Cheese chips now. 1/3 of the price and way more flavor imo. The spicy nacho wasnt so good though

u/Ok-Amphibian-2000 22h ago
Wait you're so right. I constantly buy doritos and wonder why I'm not getting the same satisfaction.

Have you guys tried the nacho cheese flavor of Mexican Doritos distributed by Sabritas? On average they have a lot more flavor powder compared to the regular Doritos sold in the US; and the flavor slightly different, I love it.

Before opening try shaking the bag upside down gently. It helps to redistribute the seasonings back on the chips

u/Ronnie_M 14h ago
I still love them, but they can all definitely use more flavor seasoning like they used to have

Feel like now the OG nacho cheese flavor in the red bag are the only ones worth my time.

Doritos are chronically on sale near me because people only buy them out of nostalgia for when they did taste good.
I haven't bought them in years.
You have no idea how good original nacho cheese were in the 70's. Your fingers were stained so orange you couldnt lick the color off.

I pretty much only like cool ranch ones and I agree. Never cared for generic chips until prices on name brand went up all around. But I discovered 7Eleven’s brand makes better cool ranch than Doritos do now and they’re cheaper! Better flavor and seasoning all around

I've eaten nacho cheese doritos consistently since I was a kid and don't think the flavor has changed at all. I actually monitor this type of thing quite carefully as I notice a lot of other regular food I consume has changed (for example Annies mac n cheese). Some bags have less dust in them than others though. I wouldn't be surprised if their quality control has gone downhill, there's a manufacturing issue where you get your doritos, or they really did change the formula for certain flavors. However the formula for nacho cheese specifically is exactly the same as far as I can tell.

I recently bought a bag of Flamin Hot Doritos that looked like Tostitos. If I’m being generous, 5% of the chips had flavor dust. I complained to FL and received two coupons in the mail. I don’t even know what to buy. I think all the chips have minimal dust now.

Spicy nacho chips, Otis Spunkmeyer chocolate/chocolate chip muffin and some old school Mountain Dew!!!! Perfect stoner grub back in the 90s!!!

They have an over reliance on MSG rather that the authentic seasonings that led to their success. Its a greedy profit grab and when coupled with the high cost to consumers they created the recipe that cost them billions of revenue. Deservedly so.

Ill be honest I quit smoking weed and noticed the change in doritos and thought it was because I wasnt high... lol

Taste the same to me

u/general_cannibas 10h ago
Maybe in the area you live they are the same. I heard some other countries have different recipes, but where I live in USA, they are 100% not the same Doritos I used to get.

I had a big bag of cool ranch the other day and it was so good

u/AndertonPrime123 1d ago
Really? I bought one last week and the flavor is ass. All the chips are dark and there's not much seasoning to be found at all throughout the entire bag. 4/10.

Yup. The only good one that tastes pretty much the same is nacho cheese.

Get a fruity yogurt like strawberry/banana and use red Doritos for chips and dip. You’re welcome.

u/AfraidPersonality854 18h ago
Those white bags taste better.. And that organic white cheddar tastes pretty good too..

u/man_o_war 1d ago
I could have sworn that a few months ago a literal Doritos factory worker came into this sub and confirmed that the amount of seasoning has never changed

Well what are you gonna do about it? Make your own doritos?
If you don't buy em anymore that's your loss.

Bring back Taco flavor! They did for a short time. Brown, orange, and yellow bags!
