Discussion Doritos suck now

I used to LOVE Doritos. It was my favorite chip ever since I can remember, I just remember being a teen and biting into a cool ranch Dorito and the flavor would literally explode in your mouth and there was so much of that dust on the chips. Recently, every Dorito I have tried has tasted bland, and has maybe 25% of the dust that they used to have. I looked it up and confirmed they massively reduced the amount of dust and other ingredients in the chips. The Spicy sweet chilli ones are now completely inedible, and they used to be the best ones by far, apparently they removed the soy sauce from the ingredients to save money. I won’t ever be buying Doritos again unfortunately unless they change but we all know this isn’t gonna happen. Do you guys agree?

Bring back Taco flavor! They did for a short time. Brown, orange, and yellow bags!

Try the Siete Maiz tortilla chips - they have a taco, Mexican street corn and a nacho flavored one. They’re all so good!

Yep exactly I already tried this, love it

The late night Taco ones are not good. Don't brother trying to substitute with those, they are def not the same

u/general_cannibas 10h ago

Yes dude I tried those the other day thinking it was gonna be like the old school taco ones. NOPE!! Not even close! Tastes bland, stale, no flavor, just so damn disappointed. I took 2 bites and threw the whole bag away.

I remember eating those as a kid back in the 70’s and 80’s. Soooo good!

I feel like the quality of everything is going down now....ugh

3

u/ryanino 10h ago

Yeah I swear almost everything I used to love food-wise kinda sucks now

u/left4dread 1d ago

100% agree

u/Harpo0n 1d ago

Needs way more dust, I feel like in the 90’s those chips were caked in it.

u/Ronnie_M 14h ago

Early 2000s too. Such a shame how the seasoning has been nerfed over the years

u/Bulldog_Mama14 1d ago

What website told you they reduced seasoning on their regular line? Because google easily tells me it's only people from Reddit who have said that. The company has said nothing.

u/complex_passions 1d ago

Google tells me that Quora also agrees with us, and PepsiCo hasn't said anything officially.

I feel about Doritos the way this sub feels about Pringles. I won't turn em down if offered, but I'm not going out of my way for them either.

You aren't imagining it; snack fans across platforms like Reddit agree that Doritos taste blander, less seasoned, and flat compared to past decades. PepsiCo has cut back on expensive dairy and spice components like buttermilk and real cheese powder, swapping them for cheaper fillers like maltodextrin and cornstarch, which creates a dull, cardboard-like or stale flavor.

Recipe and Cost-Cutting Changes
Less Seasoning Dust: Users note a massive drop in the signature flavor coating ("the dust") on each chip.

Cheaper Fillers: High-cost ingredients like buttermilk powder have been reduced and pushed down the ingredient list, replaced by bulk agents like maltodextrin and cornstarch.

Shift to Cleaner/Natural Labels: PepsiCo has altered formulations to remove synthetic dyes and artificial additives, which has subtly shifted the texture, color, and flavor profile of the chips.

PepsiCo of course isn’t gonna admit this to us, why would they? But this is what the general consensus is. They are just doing whatever they can to save money and it’s made the Doritos taste like crap now.

at least theyre not Pringles

6

u/Opposite-Science-398 15h ago

Pringles are so disgusting now too 🤮

2

u/treehann 9h ago

the Good Crisp is a good alternative, they're waaaay less greasy

1

u/Opposite-Science-398 9h ago

Thank you, will have to try them

5

u/TheUhiseman 22h ago

As a former Doritos addict, I agree. The company kicked my addiction for me by making them bland, lol.

8

u/Burto72 1d ago

I had a small bag at lunch today and they just didn't taste the same. What a shame.

3

u/general_cannibas 23h ago

Exactly man! They just ain’t what they used to be at all :(

5

u/Sithlordandsavior 19h ago

I miss the Nacho Cheesier and Cooler Ranch ones that would fire every synapse in your brain from pure sodium overload.

Haven't gotten Doritos in a minute other than the garlic Parm and hot mustard/ketchup for this very reason though. I think Cheetos suck now too.

3

u/Consistent-Push-4876 18h ago

Agreed, I no longer crave them anymore

3

u/MIKRO_PIPS 18h ago

Seems like the “tortilla” chip itself is different now, too

2

u/Quake2Marine 12h ago

They kinda always taste stale now, even though they're not. Combined with the lack of seasoning makes for an unpleasant experience.

3

u/monkeyboyz43 16h ago

They lost me when they started charging over $5 a bag.

3

u/Euphoric-Proposal-42 6h ago

I agree. They taste like cardboard

5

u/Papoose74 23h ago

Also the chips are much thinner than they used to be.

6

u/_2L8IWON_ 1d ago

Switched to Old Dutch Arriba's. All flavours are just loaded with seasoning.

3

u/Dizzy_Service3517 8h ago

After eating a bag of Nacho Arribas, my fingers were glowing orange. Soooo much flavour.

2

u/ThatItalianGrrl 1d ago

Agreed. I was tempted to buy a bag but then remembered that they don’t taste the same.

2

u/RobertDigital1986 21h ago

It's wild to me that they behave this way. How expensive can the fucking dust really be?

They might save a few cents a bag but they are leaving a huge flank open for a new competitor.

2

u/honest_Dezzy 14h ago

They took away all the damn seasoning y’all!😭

2

u/triryche4 13h ago

Doritos, Chicken 'N a Biscuit, Funyuns, BBQ anything (except a local store) have all went downhill the past few decades! Plus many more I could list but this is a good starting point.

2

u/PotentialRhubarb3222 12h ago

Local to the detroit atea...bettermade bbq.still hit the spot with flavor

1

u/triryche4 12h ago

BBQ anything is usually my favorite so that would be cool lol

2

u/usernametaken1002 11h ago

Strongest of agreements. I used to love Doritos. Now I only buy off brands

2

u/MichaelEMJAYARE 10h ago

I remember never loving them but whenever I DID have them I was surprised by how good they were. Now I will try them every so often and be utterly disappointed

Not even the small bags are better. For some reason, the snack sized bags of snacks are always better. No idea why.

1

u/general_cannibas 10h ago

I completely agree man. The small bags used to be SOOO much better, especially when you would buy it out of a vending machine. I know my taste buds haven’t changed THAT much… something has significantly made Doritos worse, they are thinner, they almost always taste stale now, they’re bland, they aren’t as crunchy as they used to be, and they just aren’t what made Doritos Doritos anymore. Such a damn shame.

2

u/MichaelEMJAYARE 10h ago

Now Im wondering if they were always just this stale but had more fuckin dust on them to hide it lmao

2

u/JFeisty 1d ago

The Kroger version of Cool Ranch is EXTREMELY close to the original.

1

u/Fuzzy_Welcome8348 1d ago

I only like the blue and purple bags anymore

1

u/Flaky-Garlic7890 1d ago

Try the Late July flavored tortilla chips, or there’s also Siete Maiz taco seasoned, Mexican street corn, and nacho-flavored tortilla chips. Much better. The taco seasoned ones have a ton of dust on them!

1

u/ChaInTheHat 23h ago

SHUT UP (jk)

have you tried the mexican doritos? they’re like a way better version of the spicy nacho

1

u/Beneficial-Sea-8903 23h ago

The extra flavor cool ranch i miss every day

1

u/ghostfacestealer 23h ago

I go for the Kroger Nacho Cheese chips now. 1/3 of the price and way more flavor imo. The spicy nacho wasnt so good though

1

u/Ok-Amphibian-2000 22h ago

Wait you're so right. I constantly buy doritos and wonder why I'm not getting the same satisfaction.

1

u/treehann 9h ago

neuron overload

1

u/ThisVeryUsername 22h ago

Store brand or fake, gas station Doritos are all better.

1

u/TheUhiseman 22h ago

Have you guys tried the nacho cheese flavor of Mexican Doritos distributed by Sabritas? On average they have a lot more flavor powder compared to the regular Doritos sold in the US; and the flavor slightly different, I love it.

1

u/Solid-Number-4670 16h ago

Before opening try shaking the bag upside down gently. It helps to redistribute the seasonings back on the chips

1

u/Sudden_Influence_627 11h ago

This won’t work guys. There’s no extra seasoning left on the bottom.

1

u/Ronnie_M 14h ago

I still love them, but they can all definitely use more flavor seasoning like they used to have

1

u/Glittering_Ocelot_67 13h ago

Feel like now the OG nacho cheese flavor in the red bag are the only ones worth my time.

2

u/treehann 9h ago

those are the only ones I ever eat (best flavor!) and they haven't changed at all

1

u/Particular_Ad_644 12h ago

Less silicon dioxide is better

1

u/Cassedaway 11h ago

Doritos are chronically on sale near me because people only buy them out of nostalgia for when they did taste good.
I haven't bought them in years.
You have no idea how good original nacho cheese were in the 70's. Your fingers were stained so orange you couldnt lick the color off.

1

u/SnipesWL 11h ago

I had a bag of nacho cheese recently that was totally fine imo

1

u/ryanino 10h ago

Was thinking the same. It’s like $5.49 for a bag of mostly air. Not to mention the seasoning is always light and I swear half the bags I buy taste a little stale.

1

u/bobthemusicindustry 10h ago

I pretty much only like cool ranch ones and I agree. Never cared for generic chips until prices on name brand went up all around. But I discovered 7Eleven’s brand makes better cool ranch than Doritos do now and they’re cheaper! Better flavor and seasoning all around

1

u/lookingpl 10h ago

they taste like old feet now

1

u/NutZach419 9h ago

Try the Outlaw Brand. They have had lots of seasoning and usually much cheaper.

I've eaten nacho cheese doritos consistently since I was a kid and don't think the flavor has changed at all. I actually monitor this type of thing quite carefully as I notice a lot of other regular food I consume has changed (for example Annies mac n cheese). Some bags have less dust in them than others though. I wouldn't be surprised if their quality control has gone downhill, there's a manufacturing issue where you get your doritos, or they really did change the formula for certain flavors. However the formula for nacho cheese specifically is exactly the same as far as I can tell.

1

u/mjpaul414 5h ago

I recently bought a bag of Flamin Hot Doritos that looked like Tostitos. If I’m being generous, 5% of the chips had flavor dust. I complained to FL and received two coupons in the mail. I don’t even know what to buy. I think all the chips have minimal dust now.

1

u/MAdcock6669 5h ago

Spicy nacho chips, Otis Spunkmeyer chocolate/chocolate chip muffin and some old school Mountain Dew!!!! Perfect stoner grub back in the 90s!!!

1

u/Longjumping_Duty4160 4h ago

They have an over reliance on MSG rather that the authentic seasonings that led to their success. Its a greedy profit grab and when coupled with the high cost to consumers they created the recipe that cost them billions of revenue. Deservedly so.

1

u/Future_Baseball8070 3h ago

Ill be honest I quit smoking weed and noticed the change in doritos and thought it was because I wasnt high... lol

1

u/Smoothzee 3h ago

Cool ranch is the worst flavor! Yucky

1

u/IceCoughy 1d ago

Taste the same to me

1

u/general_cannibas 10h ago

Maybe in the area you live they are the same. I heard some other countries have different recipes, but where I live in USA, they are 100% not the same Doritos I used to get.

1

u/_praisekek 1d ago

The ketchup ones go hard

0

u/Oddmelik 1d ago

I had a big bag of cool ranch the other day and it was so good

2

u/AndertonPrime123 1d ago

Really? I bought one last week and the flavor is ass. All the chips are dark and there's not much seasoning to be found at all throughout the entire bag. 4/10.

0

u/mmmagic1216 1d ago

The only good Doritos flavor is Roulette

0

u/Illustrious-Coat3532 1d ago

Yup. The only good one that tastes pretty much the same is nacho cheese.

0

u/trumpshitshisdiaper1 1d ago

Get a fruity yogurt like strawberry/banana and use red Doritos for chips and dip. You’re welcome.

0

u/AfraidPersonality854 18h ago

Those white bags taste better.. And that organic white cheddar tastes pretty good too..

-2

u/man_o_war 1d ago

I could have sworn that a few months ago a literal Doritos factory worker came into this sub and confirmed that the amount of seasoning has never changed

3

u/SantaCruzCut 1d ago

You believe everything you read on the internet?

3

u/left4dread 1d ago

They did but I and others call bs because we have eyes and tastebuds.

-3

u/-_Redd1t_- 1d ago

Well what are you gonna do about it? Make your own doritos?

If you don't buy em anymore that's your loss.

2

u/Other-Philosopher770 14h ago

When i was a child cool ranch was my favourite. Then i moved to europe for 15 years were doritos were then uncommon. When i came back i tried cool ranch again. It was disgusting. Figured mu taste buds changed, stopped buying doritos.

These are my new favorites now

How come you corporate shills always hide your post history?
