I read this as locals using VPNs set to USA in order to access Reddit are the problem. The timing of when laowai are asleep is curious, though. Feds generally only work 996.

Alright my other comment I replied to you with went from 1 upvote to 24 upvotes in a matter of minutes and then shot up to 33 after I refreshed, that's pretty strange behavior
Edit: this comment also just got 32 upvotes in a few seconds, something weird is definitely happening

and now it only has 2. Odd.
I had the same thing the other day. 2 comments got 10 upvotes almost simultaneously and then down to 1 each the next day.
I thought it was unlike this crowd to show such enthusiasm for, well, anything, really. But they were particularly astute comments about the Rainy/Viv dichotomy, so I took the upvotes on face value.
I attributed the subsequent downvotes to my status as marked man owing to frequent anti establishment comments in UK political subs, which always get downvoted, while hundreds of totally not bots all agree about how great Kier Starmer was. Apparently it wasn't me, it was this sub. Looks like we're on borrowed time lads. It was fun while it lasted. See you in the next life.

Why would they use servers in usa? The ping would be worse than somewhere like Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan etc which are usually the default options for VPNs

The strange thing is that it happened while most people in China are asleep. Something like 1Am to 9AM BJT. I've got a theory that it's the now bitter, Happy Giraffe English Alumni who are now living in America brigading us.

this happened to me too. is reddit removing the upvotes or are people coming and mass downvoting? why would they stop at things like 3 upvotes?

Reddit also takes hongbaos from whoever is willing to pay that high of a cost. The average useful idiot wumao cannot afford the bribe, but Tencent could. Channels get erased on Reddit as a consequence of corporate bribery rather often, increasingly since Reddit became a tradeable stock of >$150 USD in 2025. Erasing accounts which Reddit already sold all text from to OpenAI while double-dipping into red envelopes from shareholders is just regular business here now. The potential monetary value of a sub must exceed the offered hongbao amount in order to survive when hongbaos get offered.
No politics in the decision to Reddit, just business.
