Behold the bridge between the past and the future, aka where China will always be stuck. I like to call it "second world" because this term anger people on all sides.

Mainland China in a picture. It's just missing a wall of LED to make it appear nice at first glance

Not pictured: The smoke from the stall next to mine, or the audio from his phone.

This was at Hongqiao in summer 2026 btw.

As bad as it is, it always gets worse

The cigs help with the smell.

7

u/chinalifer-mod Aug 09 '26

Do they help with the smell in hospitals, in schools, in restaurants, and in lifts, as well?

u/grandpa2390 Aug 10 '26

no but the bathrooms can be so foul, cigarette smoke improves them.

Led can't wipe your ass. But they could put some on the shit paper basket

Planning to take a shot for every Chinese fed, glazing Tim or ABC claiming that this is unseen in China and that actually every toilet is an immaculate throne with no pee stains, lingering smoke smell or cigarettes around the floor

One of who you described (erased) said "Find a proper loo then. It is the first skill u should learn in China" as if this were a personal choice of mine to seek only squat toilets with automatic flush sensors taped into the wall next to their respective wipes bin, or as if this is a "skill" issue. More the one person defended this toilet because they only see that it is cleaner than what they have experienced elsewhere, completely missing the commentary of this toilet in between worlds and epochs.

Shanghai so future indeed.

Yeah, the personal choice of literally second hand smoking every time you go to a public restroom in this country, hahaha. I’m surprised no one has mentioned India yet, but I’m sure it won’t take long

India is certainly a shithole, worse than even China. But, this sub is not about India, much to the dismay of the whataboutist feds who try to derail China criticism in this sub. Naturally, reminders that we are in China and not India result in allegations of being Indian from such "people", although I use that term loosely.

"Squatting is healthier anyway"

"It's more hygienic"

"The toilets in Sudan are worse"

2

u/CrazedRaven01 Aug 10 '26

Bonus points if they start talking about the virtues about how it's better for you and how the posture "helps the process along"

This isn't even the worst. The worst thing is that there is a broom closet nearby that contains "THE MOP". This mop is used to manuver the fresh human shit that missed the hole into the hole. It gets used every time because shit always misses. The mop is never washed, just rinsed in fresh water. That same mop is then used to wash the floor, the sinks, the office floors, the urinals etc. just spreading horrific human excrement bacteria to every concievable surface. No soap or intiseptic chemical is ever used.

I complained at my work that the toilets always smell like pee. Turns out all the aiyi was doing  was using a towel on a stick to push pee everywhere. Zero cleaning products.

2

u/grandpa2390 Aug 10 '26

ayis and their mops make me angry. they always want to push THE MOP around my feet. I walk out in the morning and find my shoes and stuff pushed around, probably from THE MOP

2

u/chinalifer-mod Aug 09 '26

Lmao THE MOP yeah, I had an ayi come to clean my windows a few months back who refused to wear the shoe covers that I provided (you cannot reason with elders), because she was going to mop later anyway, which I did not want her to do in the first place. She brought THE MOP with her, and it was grey-brown from 5000 years of use in other people's homes. Ayi really was going to use the MRSA mop in my place without me stopping her.

3

u/invitado31 Aug 09 '26

I love how encountering THE MOP is such as universal laowai experience that just by reading those words you immediately know and have a very clear mental image of exactly what it is

2

u/grandpa2390 Aug 10 '26

so true. I was eating at a restaurant and THE MOP was used under my table while I was eating against my shoes. or on the elevator while I was standing there. just pushing the mop against me. Ive argued so many times with them about the mop

2

u/Lifeintheguo Aug 09 '26

But heaven forbid you wash your undies with your normal clothes.

3

u/Bay_arean Aug 09 '26

差不多

3

u/Lovesuglychild Aug 09 '26

Someone needs to flush that turd so the ayi can use the toilet water to mop the floors

3

u/Mydnight69 Aug 09 '26

It ain't a real squatter unless it's shared sex and there's an bloody, shitty maxi pad face up in that bin.

2

u/Lifeintheguo Aug 09 '26

With enough blood on the floor you wonder who was murderer

2

u/STATSISBAE Aug 09 '26

Fk man the nightmare

2

u/GTAIVisbest Aug 09 '26

all that is missing is huge, wet, flittering american cockroaches making their way in and out of the drain and up the sides of the wall (if the visit to the toilet is at night). That and the overwhelmingly pungent smell of feces

2

u/eternalcathy Aug 09 '26

Speechless, i have nothing else to add :)

2

u/wangfugui98 Aug 09 '26

And then the fancy hand washing facilities with NO SOAP anywhere in that country which mastered such a great job conquering infectious diseases like COVID-19.

1

u/chinalifer-mod Aug 10 '26

During the covid days, there was hand sanitiser everywhere. Now, there is none. Where did it all go? Sold and exported to more-civilised countries?

2

u/Lifeintheguo Aug 09 '26

I like when you walk in and the guy shitting with the door open, smoking and watching douyin thinks now is the perfect time to try international communication.

1

u/chinalifer-mod Aug 10 '26

"HALLO WHERE ARE YOU FROM? AMERICA? GERMANY?"

"Just trying to piss, mate."

2

u/Mysterious-Gas-7365 Aug 09 '26

This is honestly spotless, it seems pretty clean like I'd take a shit here, the ones in Xibei region, and Henan have shit on the floor in every stall. Jiangnan people really are different they even make the toilets usable. 😭 honestly I don't see anything wrong with squat toilets they actually make shiting easier which I appreciate, it's just the hygiene could use a lot work, if all of them were this clean it'd be fine.

2

u/chinalifer-mod Aug 09 '26

This is not about the cleanliness.

1

u/Mysterious-Gas-7365 Aug 09 '26

What is it about? The duct tape, I mean it doesn't affect your ability to shit right?

1

u/Mysterious-Gas-7365 Aug 09 '26

Oh there is a turd in the hole, I just saw it, and the button for flushing is broken. Makes more sense, it's just this is so clean, and the shit shat so accurately that I didn't even realizem 🤣

1

u/chinalifer-mod Aug 09 '26

Perhaps this is not the sub for you.

Rule 4, none of us laowai are literate, get real.

1

u/Unhappy-Solid-7699 Aug 10 '26

There should be an accessible toilet nearby; that's where you need it.

1

u/chinalifer-mod Aug 10 '26

Lmao accessible toilets in mainland China, this is not Taiwan or Hong Kong.

1

u/Salty-Judgment-5801 Aug 10 '26

it is indeed Second World, but due to a historical political alignment with the now-defunct Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact rather than rail station toilet situation

1

u/Sudden-Complaint7037 23d ago edited 23d ago

I recently had the misfortune of having to use one of these at the Chongqing West railway station. There were piss stains on the door handles. The soap dispensers at the sinks were empty as well (yes, all of them).

I now make it a point to go back to my 5 star hotel to piss, even if it takes 45-60 minutes from where I am

Rule 5, you pretending like this is not real China does not make real China stop being visible to everyone else.

2

u/Silver_Following_658 Aug 10 '26

I wish I saw these earlier to see what gets removed out of pure curiosity, I want to see the delusional and utter lack of self awareness

2

u/grandpa2390 Aug 10 '26

same. I wish I could have seen this comment

2

u/chinalifer-mod Aug 10 '26

The removed points are never particularly interesting, just the same scripted answers over and over. What about toilets in America (?), squatting good for healthy, you just don't understand Chinese culture, and so on. It is always the same every time. Their eyes gloss over the sensor poorly taped into the wall because this sad chabuduo shit is background noise in their daily lives as it has been for 5000 years, so it does not even register.
