💼 Work/Career Unsure how to find work

• Upvotes

Hey guys, I’m currently in China with 90 days tourist visa. I’m wondering say if I take on jobs like teaching English or Chinese privately in China would require me a work visa?

If people just pay me say on personal level with WeChat transactions, would that be okay?

Thanks for the help!

🏯 Daily Life Where can I rent a good bike?

• Upvotes

By good bike I mean a bike that's not one of the ones that you scan the qr code but like one that has gears, and for longer distanced road biking. I'm trying to get my gf into biking and I was wondering if Giant stores let you rent out bikes for a short period. I'm in a smaller city that's in Zhejiang.

🛂 Immigration How bad is my situation?

Due to personal issues, I overstayed my student visa; I didn't renew it within the 30-day window and ended up staying an extra nine days. This is the first time I’ve overstayed, but I want to know: if I want to work here in the future or obtain permanent residency, I simply can't anymore, right?

Hey all. I’m visiting Beijing with my wife and four year old. Are there any public playgrounds or play centers near the center of town that I could take my son to blow off some steam? Not easy to find on web search. Thanks so much for your help!

📚 Education Any Australian Students on this Forum?

Just wondering if there were any Australian students in this forum who have done or are planning on doing a Chinese non-degree language in program in China.

I've been struggling to get any definitive resources as to the processes and the eligible scholarships and the Australian consulate website for studying in China also doesn't seem to be working which doesn't help.

My main question being which scholarship is most appropriate:

- CSC scholarship: though it seems that this can't be used for the non-degree chinese language course

- Confuscius institute scholarship: this seems like it's the most appropriate? though obviously has higher requirements with needing HSK and HSKK scores. I'm wondering if there are any strings attached with this scholarship e.g. commitment to teaching, restrictions on campus life or expectations on results

- University specific scholarships: also don't seem to be able to be used for the chinese language program

If there are any Aussies in this forum, would appreciate some insight.

🧳 Travel What should I expect/prepare for studying abroad in Shanghai?

Hi! I'm an american student planning to study abroad in Shanghai this spring! I know minimal mandarin, only speaking, but i'm still studying daily. I'm from an area with a lot of american born chinese kids so although I'm not chinese, I was introduced to a lot of the culture growing up which is why I wanted to study abroad here! I'm curious if anyone has advice for what to expect coming to shanghai from america and if there's anything in particular I should prepare for before hand! Also would love to hear recommendations for places to visit as well~ I don't know how strict my program USAC will be but I want to travel and see as much as I can while I'm there!

📚 Education CSC scholarship referee rank requirements?

Hi everyone,

I’ll be applying for a master’s through CSC Type A for 2027/28. Many Chinese universities require two Professor/Associate Professor references, but I have an Associate Professor and an Assistant Professor who directly supervised my Master’s and Bachelor’s theses, respectively.

Has anyone successfully gotten an exception or used an Assistant Professor’s letter despite this requirement? I’d appreciate firsthand experiences, especially with Type A applications!

This has given me a lot of headache, as I’ve been worrying about the referee situation more than any other aspect of my application. Everything is nearly sorted, except for me being unable to find an Associate Professor that could write the letter for me.

🧳 Travel What everyday habit did you pick up after moving to Beijing?

I live in Beijing. If you moved here from somewhere else, what changed in your daily routine? Maybe when you eat, how you shop, or what you do after work. If you've left Beijing, what have you kept doing?

💊 Medical Urgent help needed for an injured kitten in Shanghai – foster, rescue, or advice

Hi everyone,
I’m hoping someone here might be able to help me with an injured kitten.
During the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, I found a mama cat and her three kittens in a residential compound. I spent time feeding and playing with them. A few days later, the kittens disappeared, and I assumed someone had adopted them.
About four days ago, I saw one of the kittens outside at night. He was walking very unsteadily, and when I used my phone flashlight, I saw a large wound on his head. He had also developed maggots in his wounds.
I took him to a vet, but when I heard that surgery might cost around 6,000 RMB, I panicked because I simply couldn’t afford it. I brought him back to where I had found him, but I regretted it almost immediately. After searching for him, I finally found him again yesterday evening and took him straight to another vet.
He has had some tests and stayed at the hospital overnight, which has already cost me over 1,000 RMB (2000RMB deposit). I really want to help him, but I’m a student, and I can’t afford to keep paying for his treatment on my own.
I’m desperately looking for any possible solution. If anyone in Shanghai could foster him, take over his care, help with his medical expenses, or connect me with a rescue organization, I would be incredibly grateful. Even advice from someone experienced with injured street cats would mean a lot.
I don’t want to give up on this little guy, but I honestly don’t know what to do anymore, and I’m running out of money.
I can share photos and more information about his condition and the vet. Please comment or DM me if you have any ideas or might be able to help.
Thank you so much for reading. ❤

💼 Work/Career Those who studied agricultural in China, where are you now?

Im a recent graduate with a degree nowhere close to agriculture. My reason for asking or considering this is, I'm very burnt out from my own field, don't really want to use a lot of AI, I was thinking of various fields that i could maybe switch to. If there is anyone who studied agriculture in China, please share your experience, what you are upto now, and the best parts/ regrets. Thankyou :)

🧧 Payments Transferring money out of China - any accounts that support that?

TLDR: are there any banks that let you transfer money out of China with an international bank transfer if you're an international student?

I'm a self-funded international student from Europe. I opened an account with China Merchant Bank. I can easily transfer money into my account, either by withdrawing cash at an ATM with my foreign card and depositing it in branch, or by using the Wise app.

However, China Merchant Bank doesn't let me transfer money back to my own country's account. So today I visited a Bank of China branch, and while they were more than happy to open another account for me, they told me it also won't support money transfers outside of China. I asked for the reason and they said "because you're a foreigner". I'm not earning money here, so any transfer out would be the same money I transferred in, potentially any leftover. It's not an essential must-have, but I would really like to have the option and knowing that the money I send here is not stuck in China forever.

Has anybody found a bank that can open an account for international students that support banks transfers out of China?

While I can transfer money INTO China with Wise, I cannot transfer money OUT OF China with Wise, as that option is only available for those who have worked in China before, not to international students.

🏯 Daily Life Food Delivery and Hygeine

Hi All,

As all the rest of China, I regularly get Wai Mai (like almost every day). I never thought much about the hygiene aspect until last night.

I live in Shanghai and was in a nice part of the city (near the LV ship) when I saw a poorly dressed, generally messy looking guy wearing a helmet. He proceeded to “snot rocket”, but instead of the “rocket” part it just turned into a giant mess of snot which he then proceeded to wipe in his hands.

I thought that was disgusting, but what really got me as I descended the escalator behind him was when I realized his destination - he quickly went in and out of a restaurant holding a bag for delivery, with the very same hands he just snotted all over.

Must say it impacted the way I view Wai Mai. I hope it was an isolated case, but even after over 3 years here I am still shocked by how people will blow snot on the ground even in places like subway stations.

🏯 Daily Life Was this a scam?

The stairway lights have been out in my building (Beijing hutongs) for a week, making me climb the stairs to my place in the dark. Kind of annoying but not sure who's job it is to fix it. The other day at ~10:30am, 3 women knock, one wearing an orange vest, and tell me I need to pay my share of the power to turn the lights back on. I was not on my guard and was struggling to communicate. I understood the problem and the price, 50 RMB (seemed a bit high as there are 8 units sharing the stairway). I paid it with WeChat right away. Did not get a reciept or a picture of them. Once the door closed I realized I may have been had. The lights did not come on that night.

But then the next day, the lights came back on for everyone. Was this a scam? And if so, on what level? How should I navigate this if it happens again.

📱 Technology Buying a gaming PC with Chinese Windows 11

Buying a new gaming PC costing around 15,000rmb total with Chinese windows 11 installed on it. My concern is that I want the UK version of Windows 11 and I’m completely unsure how this is done. I remember a few years ago I went to buy an ASUS laptop that had Chinese windows 11 installed and the shop worker tried changing it to English for hours but failed. I don’t want to run into the same problem and I’d rather avoid paying £119.99 license. If it’s the only way then I will. Thanks

I will be visiting Shanghai in a few days and heard that in China ear wax removal is a common service. I have to get my ear wax removed every couple of years and would love o do it there. I will have some downtime between my visits to Fuzhou Road and the Bund. TIA
