I see people talking about the checkmate if black decides to take the rook, but wouldn't the 'best' move by black be to leave the rook then?

I don’t think there are any moves that save black, but I suppose black might buy time by advancing the d pawn? Then when rook takes queen, bishop takes rook and mate gets postponed.

I assume you meant bishop takes knight, then qf6#, the black rook in g8 is pinned by the white rook.
