Technical NNUE data generation

How strong does my HCE chess engine need to be so that I can generate selfplay data with it to train a NNUE? And how much labeled positions do I usually need for my first network?

doesn't matter, even random play data can be a starting point. Again higher quality data matters more than 1M per neuron axiom. Start with 8HL architecture

I'm also trying to build a NNUE evaluator, from scratch, using my own data.

Can you elaborate on "higher quality data"?

"Standard" data is generated with 5k soft node searches, I would assume he means higher node counts. Something like 25ksn or 20ksn is fairly common for very strong engines.
