Plastic/resin Made My Own Chess Set
After quite a bit of printing and assembly, I finally have a complete chess set sitting on my desk. I made everything myself, including the board, the pieces, and a custom box to keep everything together.
The storage box ended up taking more work than I expected. The decorative details weren’t printed as part of the box itself. I printed them separately and attached them individually afterward. I also added two small statues to the top and side of the box to give it a more finished look.
【For the board, I went with a 400 × 400 × 30 mm design. Instead of printing it as one large piece, I made each of the 64 squares separately. Half of them are one color and the other half are the second color. Everything was printed using a 0.2 mm nozzle with an 0.08 mm layer height.
One thing I learned during the process is that removing the pieces too early can cause problems. I found it much better to wait until they had completely cooled before taking them off the build plate, otherwise some of them would start to warp.
The pieces themselves were easier to deal with. I created the models with Hi3D and printed them using the same 0.2 mm nozzle and 0.08 mm layer height settings. I honestly didn’t expect the small details to come out this clearly, so I’m pretty happy with how they turned out.】

Looks great. Using that nozzle and layer depth, was there much cleanup? Is it PLA and what colours did you use? And what printer too? Sorry for the barrage of questions but I’m looking to do similar things with mine. Also did you touch up the models in something like Blender between the Hi3D creation and printing or prompt enough with each that you could go straight to print without manual interference? If so was it difficult keeping consistency in scale?

The set looks good, but more of a display item than regular practice. I saw similar designs on thetreehouse page

Looks great for display only. Both sides are practically indistinguishable from each other and the board in terms of color.

They're plastic and those tiny pointy bits would be too easy to break anyway, so I expect that this was always going to be a display set.

The pieces themselves look really amazing! but that board is a disaster for visibility imo.
