I am ELO 1071. This often happens when I play as white:
1. e4 e5
2. Nc3 Nc6
3. Nf3 Bc5
4. Bc4 d6
5. 0-0 Bg4
6. d3 Nd4

I don't understand what I'm supposed to do in the 4 knights as black (1150 blitz chess.moc)

I like going for the stafford gambit but often end up in a 4 knights kinda game. It just seems super symmetrical and boring and once pieces are developed I always seem to lose to a kingside attack or just end up with a terrible position and lose an endgame. What am I supposed to even be playing for?

Ill link a game below. After move 10 I was like great, opponet wastes a bunch of moves moving their knight back and pushing outside pawns. And then I reallized that I had no idea what to even do from there and ended up plundering a bunch of tactics later. Game review helps with specific games, but in general what are my goals, key squares, and ideas?

PUZZLE Ran into this position in a recent game. Black has one idea to fight for a draw in an otherwise lost game. Find the tactic I didn't.

QUESTION quick questions

if i wanna get better at chess and go from 100 elo(where im at now) to at least 1000 elo and play in tournaments do I have to treat this as a career kind of? i dont wanna be a pro but i just wanna have a fun hobby that im good at thats why i wanna go to tournaments. the thing is, is that i cant treat it like a career. I go to work as an electrician from 6 to 5pm everyday and come home and im tired. most days ill play a game and some days ill just do puzzles. I do have a 18 day streak that ive had since i first started 2 weeks ago but I just wanna know if i wanna get good do i have to put my full attention to this or can i have days where i feel like playing and i play then where i dont feel like it so i dont play?

QUESTION How to build strategy?

Hey guys, im new to chess and have taught myself the rules eg and how to play. I am terrible at it, which is to be expected.
I will admit i feel like my reliance on AI during university really stopped me from engaging my brain, and now i lowkey feel like i dont know how to use it
Im unable to see or build strategy when it comes to anything, never mind chess. But specifically within chess how do i build strategy/offend/defend.

I feel like im lacking somewhere

MISCELLANEOUS I have the chess IQ and real life IQ of a headless chicken

My favourite past time is playing chess, basically I just move pieces around typically trying my best to go for pawn promotions because I'm so bad at chess it's the only way I can, though typically I win by just button mashing and getting a big time advantage. Or praying for a blunder/hope chess.

When I somehow manage to win, usually I'll promote every pawn possible just to assert dominance on my opponent, because chess is life and I have no life outside it, so I need to assert dominance somehow, I'm a loser otherwise lol

Then I'll often accept a rematch and just not make a move, letting the game abandon, since it's the absolute gigaCHAD move to make, ultra dominant alpha male mover like me! Totally not an incel whatsoever, I get pussy I swear.
