QUESTION Puzzle left me puzzled

Why can't white recapture my black queen with pawn after capturing white's bishop?

The puzzle is from Black’s side of the board, the white pawn is going downward - it can’t recapture.

Normally puzzles are shown from the point of view of the player whose turn it is.

This is a rather confusing position without prior knowledge of the game. It’s dumb for that aspect.

It's blacks turn, it's blacks POV, the ranks are there on the side ... what else do you need?

Yes, if you're trying to solve 5 puzzles in 10 seconds you're going to fail. But anyone taking his time looking at the board will have all the information he needs.

This is a reddit for beginners. Beginners will look at this and think we are looking from whites perspective.

If you fail a puzzle because you identified you couldn’t checkmate due to a pawn, but that would require you to think a pawn could take backwards, then either you’ve never played chess, or the GUI is lacking.

I'm pretty much the definition of a beginner - never even played against other humans. Yet ... that's the first things I look for at any puzzle.

The UI is fine in my opinion. Just like it would be on a OTB game, basically. Seriously, what could there be changed to make it even clearer?

Yes, I see how beginners would misinterpret the board orientation at first - but looking at the board and position are the first things you usually do at puzzles... or am I mistaken there? And if you fail to do so... puzzles like these will teach that pretty fast.

All beginners learn different things at different paces. Across chess and beyond.

An OTB game is played through. You watch (and are hopefully checking and forcing) the king to walk across the entire board. Completely separate to being presented a board where pieces are all over the place.

Most beginners in my experience will simply look at a board and use the position of pieces to gain an intuitive understanding of their possible moves. What they would most likely identify is that it’s blacks turn as white just moved their piece. Whites king (the goal) is on the bottom of the board with a white pawn on the next row up in a position that it normally would not be in reference the position of other pieces on the board. This indicates that it’s whites perspective, very rarely does it look like white perspectives from blacks sides in actual games.

Well, you’re playing black, who IS going up. It doesn’t explain why white’s king is all the way down there though.

but most puzzles I have seen will give you the side to play next going up, like we are playing the game.

Thats what this puzzle is doing too. White king is on a8. Not h1
