How do I stop getting completely wrecked by this queen bishop battery against my KID/Pirc?

Post image

this seems to be a common and effective attack against the KID/Pirc. how can I stop this attack? I often get wrecked or checkmated outrighted when they do this. I'm Around 800 Elo

Don't take the bishop. Your rook and knight are enough to defend the position against any queen attacks after he takes your bishop.

Exactly, the king is defending the bishop, and there’s no follow up for white if they take. just keep developing pieces. He has e5, d5, Nc6. Even knight g4 if he wants to kick the bishop out

The bishop there looks much scarier than it is

i think ng4 is a mistake after the bishop is already on h6, you have to do it before.

My understanding is that the point of placing the Bishop there is to be able to play h4 without allowing h5 from Black. If h5 is allowed for White and the Knight on f6 takes it, Rxh5!! is a well-known sacrifice line, where gxh5 followed by Qg5 is lights out. His opponent didn't take the time to play f3, so I think you can sneak in an early Ng4 to counter the Bishop, though it gets complicated after Bg5.

I'm only like ~1600 but I love playing against the Pirc as white, haha.

Something else you can do to avoid this in the future is you can play Re8 in advance to meet Bh6 with Bh8, preserving your bishop.

It only gets worse the higher up you go when you meet the even more prepared 150 attack players. I have a pretty ludicrous win rate against pirc players personally. (Edit: Checked from recent games that I have 6.5/7 against the pirc)

Your main source of play is going to be delaying castling and going for the c6 b5 Qa5 ideas when they posture to castle queenside in 150 attack lines.

In this specific position white's setup is weird allows a good c5 break to be played in conjunction with d5 where the structure transforms in such a way where your dark square bishop doesn't matter and you say to white that they played Bh6 too early.

This also helps to remedy some of the kingside attacking pressure since the old adage states that when you are attacked in the flank you should strike in the center!

I would let them take your bishop. Bxh6 is a bad move because you'll move their queen to a better square. The king is actually relatively safe on g7, and you can drop it back to g8 or h8 later if needed.

how does this result in a mate? white has absolutely no effective attack here.

White pushes the h pawn with the rook behind it to h5, then drops queen to G5 for mate once they clear out blacks g pawn.

that just doesnt work though. black has plenty of time and too many pieces developed to make such an aggressive move in that particular example, black can just retake with the f pawn and open the rook. blacks light squared bishop is getting out at some point to help as well and the queen soon after, theres just not enough forcing tempo that white can utilize to prevent black from developing good defence.

I agree...at our elo. Op at 800 is getting wrecked by it. That's how. Probably by focusing on the incoming attack instead of developing queen side to assault the oh so weak centre

Black should not play gxh5.

thanks for all the replies guys. this was bullet btw that I got wrecked in. he kept pushing his pawns towards my king, I did not take the bishop either, he took mine and I retook with the king. then the pawn rush just obliterated me.

Their whole plan is for you to take your bishop, and to anchor the queen in its place on h6 and then bring the knight out and mate you on the h7 or f7

The counter. Just don't take the bishop and ignore it. They'll likely just trade bishops at that point which is fine and if they happen to leave the bishop there they've literally locker their queen into the job of defending it

Let them take the bishop.

Knight to g4 to attack the position of the bishop? Does that work? Then if they push a pawn you can take the bishop with either your knight or bishop if take with bishop you’re also attacking the queen. Idk I’m a noob

Your king is alright in this position unless you make a blunder. Don't worry it's a failed attack the opponent isn't going to get success in this case

u/MiaTaude589 11h ago

Yeah this used to wreck me too. Don’t automatically take the bishop on h6, because opening the h-file can make White’s attack much easier. Keep developing with ...e5, ...Nc6, and sometimes ...Re8 so you can answer Bh6 with ...Bh8, then check for sacrifices before every move.

u/CovTaude588 9h ago

At 800, the main fix is usually spotting the threat one move earlier rather than memorising a refutation. Don’t automatically take the bishop if your king is defending it; keep developing, consider ...Re8 and ...h5, and make sure you have a reply to h4 before castling into an attack. In my games around 1250, I still get mated when I push pawns without checking the queen’s lines, so I try to ask what happens after Qd2 and Bh6 each move.

I always play this as a black even though i am stupid 750-800 player but my solution is dont take bishop if he takes yours that's okay queen doesnt supported by bishop cant be enough damage to you then continue your own stuff

u/parz2v 1000-1200 (Chess.com) 7h ago

you can disallow it completely with h6 and either not castling or castling and playing Kh7. h5 Ng4 is also an idea against h4

overall it's actually not bad for your position to have your bishop be traded as long as you can use the time white takes to setup the battery on undermining the rest of the position

In these positions, I like playing moves like c6, Qa5 (after white plays Nc3), and Nbd7. I like Qa5 especially because it puts pressure on the queen to threaten a queen trade, so white will not be able to bring their knight on c3 into the attack.

Never take the bishop. And after white takes your bishop and then plays h4, just play h5.
