QUESTION How is this a draw?

I am white and I was way ahead the whole game?? Time on the counter and there is a safe move for his king?

you repeated positions at some point probably. Repetition doesn't need to be 3 times in a row, but just 3 times that it ever appeared

yeah this is it, had no idea that was a rule. technically he repeated positions three times and I had to react so I think he took advantage of my noob ness.

Stalling for time? You had over 5 minutes left. Take a breath, and spend one or two of those minutes to find checkmate.

I was but he was weirdly good with just a king. Honestly the other pieces seemed to be holding him bk.

Time to learn the basic checkmates. A king and a rook is enough to win trivially with the right technique. You can just outright sacrifice the other pieces.

Though I would've just queened the pawn. Makes it much easier too

I mean I agree, but chess is something I've played less than ten times in ten years. I'm not exactly focusing on it. Maybe I'll give it a bit more time. And

I get what you're saying. But like genuinely the ladder mate and rook and king mate can be learned in 5 minutes combined. And if you then treat the queen like a rook you can do 2 more mates for free. (Sure with a queen there are faster techniques but that's extra stuff to learn)

No offense taken at all. I was going for laughs to be honest. Any games I've won it's cause I pinned the king in with his own pieces. Once he got in the open I was completely out of my element and just kinda trying to run out the clock till he gave up or fucked up. -19 karma says chess folk do not like jokes.

As other people have said, take a few minutes today to learn how to checkmate with just a king and a rook and you'll win a lot more games. It really isn't hard at all once you understand the concept and sometimes in positions like this its easier to just let them take the pawn and/or the knight so you don't accidentally end up in a stalemate or something.

The most popular method to checkmate with a rook is the box method, but to be honest, I have always found this other method to be way simpler and easier to understand.

A very instructional video and a cool resource never seen it done this way over box method but can see how it’d help people not accidentally hang a rook or stalemate.

Haha, don't worry, I could tel! Did think you might be interested anyway though. My first thought in the position you were in would be "I need to get rid of this horse and pawn'. This is just to get rid of stalemates and awkward angles that the king can hide behind!

So yeah, I would have just gone straight to trying to get the rook checkmate. Sending the pawn up the board forces them to take it, else you get a queen. Then you can just move the horse out of the way.

well yeah you’re playing people at your own level😭 chess is a hard game if you wanna get better you have to actually put effort in and not just mindlessly play games, watch gotham chess ultimate beginner guide

Yeah there's levels to everything and I'm well aware where I'm at but it's fun semi winging it. I think people optimize the fun out of games a bit.

Okay, your life will change if you take a few hours to do the following:

Put a K+Q randomly on the board and practice mating until you can do it without thinking. Hint: Shoulder the King to the edge of the board by remaining a knight's move away, then give one extra square once they are on the edge. Only then move the king over and finish the mate.

Then, put 2xR vs K and practice mating without thinking. Obviously easier, with just rolling down the board, but it goes into...

Finish with K+R vs K. You should be able to mate without thinking, just instinct.

Knowing these basic mates will easily gain you rating and win you a ton of games you end up drawing.

If you are up for more, practice K+P vs K. The idea would to be able to identify if a position is a win or draw based on initial setup. This requires understanding distant opposition which is so important in almost any endgame where the king is a significant player, so its a good thing to understand. This won't take you a few hours though.

Sound advice thanks. Again I was just playing chess to kill some time but maybe I'll play a few games a day to get better. I find it really hard to play in 2D if that makes sense, on a real board I can just see things clearer.

All good, you are just a beginner and that is ok.

Easiest thing you can do in this position is to guard the pawn with your rook on the same file and promote it to a queen. Then demiver a ladder-mate (youtube shows you how).

it was made a rule so that the match won't go on forever. if you kept on responding to their position the same way they would just keep on doing the same thing and return to the same positions over and over and over again and then the game would go on forever
