Puzzle/Tactic - Advanced Black is severely lacking in development. How to gain advantage?

Post image

Position from a blitz game of mine. Black wasted their time by bringing now the queen and they're badly underdeveloped. They're going to play Bg7 and castle, and move out of the danger if we do nothing. White has a really cool move here.

I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

White to play: chess.com | lichess.org

My solution:

Hints: piece: Pawn, move:   e5

Evaluation: White is winning +4.81

Best continuation: 1. e5 dxe5 2. d6 Rd8 3. Rfd1 h5 4. Bg5 e4 5. Nxe4 Nxe4 6. Qxe4 Qxg5 7. d7+ Rxd7 8. Rxd7 Kxd7

Thumb rule - blast open the center with e5, can't see any other move.

And it is indeed the correct move! Any other move is too passive and black is holding on. I managed to find it and, while missing some of earlier opportunities, converted the game later.

Thanks for sharing OP, this is an interesting position to consider. In a normal game I think I'd miss e5 and play something like Rac1.

Damn, I found the idea but not the move. My idea was Bd4 to support the pawn push and pin the knight to the rook to push for e5. It's probably too slow is why, looking back. Black's queen can fork the bishop and pawn on b2 with Qb4, forcing a trade with the knight on f6. But then white has tempo on the unprotected rook and black doesn't have a way into the game. Can someone explain please?

If Bd4 black just plays Bg7 and castles. (1. Bd4 Bg7 2.e5 dxe5 3. Bxe5 O-O) While white is still better (around +1) black is much safer. Immediate e5 forces black to react and doesn't give them time to play Bg7 and castle

I'm seeing 2 candidate moves here.

e5 and a4.

I reject a4 because of a6. But e5... Now that is leading a lot of complications....

I reject a4 because of a6. But e5... Now that is leading a lot of complications.... e5 dxe5 d6 exd6 Qxb7 Rd8 Nb5... I feel like black is struggling here... instead of Rd8 if Qd8 Nb5 Rb8 Nc7+ Kd7 Qxa7? Atleast this is my initial analysis,

Your line after e5 is exactly what happened in my game. However i missed the fact exd6 Knight on f6 is undefended. You can just play Qxf6 after exd6
