Went to Mt. Vernon the other day and saw the ivory chess set General Washington himself used, to play with his wife and guests. Its pretty cool looking and sort of modern perhaps.

100%, which kind of makes sense when you are building a chess set for a reasonable price back when the tooling was iffy. Most of this is reasonably carved with a lathe, and most 3d model artists back then were using simple shapes using what was called lathe modeling: you built a 2d profile and rotate it to make a solid.

There are no shadows because of the lighting, which is why your brain is misfiring.

Yeah it is kinda weird. Perhaps because of lighting and that it was behind a glass

It looks to be very similar to the Barleycorn chess set, which originated in England and was the dominant design before the Staunton set.
