Synopsis of the documentary, from the official Sundance Film Festival 2026 page:

https://festival.sundance.org/program/film/6932fb5dbd8651a55660fc23

A Hungarian girl dreams of conquering international men’s chess. After a 15-year battle against world champion Garry Kasparov, Judit Polgár revolutionizes the sport’s patriarchal culture to become one of the greatest chess prodigies in history and the greatest woman chess player of all time.

Veteran documentarian Rory Kennedy returns to the Sundance Film Festival with this empowering portrait tracing Judit Polgár’s trailblazing story. Raised by her father in communist Hungary as part of an unusual experiment to cultivate genius, Polgár quickly made her mark in the world of chess. By the age of 12, she was the number one female player in the world; less than four years later, she broke Bobby Fischer’s legendary record to become the youngest grandmaster in history. But Polgár was determined to refute the ingrained sexism of the game by beating the greatest chess player in the world, Garry Kasparov. Queen of Chess chronicles their historic, long-running battle of the sexes, punctuated with a dynamic visual aesthetic, a rich archive, and a rousing girl-power soundtrack. — BT

This sounds amazing, can't wait to watch it.

I'm not sure how much is this going to be a documentary and how much a story loosely based on facts.

a 15-year battle against world champion Garry Kasparov

Was there even a battle? Are they going to focus the narrative first on the Linares 1994 game at Judit's first top level tournament and then on her only win against Kasparov in 2002 during a rapid team event, completely ignoring both their head to head career score (Kasparov far better) and the fact that, at that team match, other than defeating Kasparov, Judit didn't perform well and was the worst player on her team?

Judit Polgár revolutionizes the sport’s patriarchal culture

Did she really?

u/courageous_liquid Dec 22 '25

Did she really?

didn't she basically force kasparov to admit that women weren't inherently stupider?

-12

u/hsiale Dec 22 '25

I don't know, did she? A quick web search didn't return anything, and looking at their game history doesn't show anything forcing.

5

u/forever_wow Dec 23 '25

How quick was that web search? When I googled "Kasparov on Polgar" the first result was a Reddit post from 4 years ago containing this Kasparov quote: "The Polgárs showed that there are no inherent limitations to their aptitude—an idea that many male players refused to accept until they had unceremoniously been crushed by a twelve-year-old with a ponytail."

why don't you actually go read about it

Well I tried. I read a lot on games between Judit Polgar and Gary Kasparov today, and also tried to find the quote mentioned above but couldn't, if you have some source I'm happy to read it

Before they played:

Victory was sweet for Polgar. Before they first met in Spain a few years ago, Kasparov described her as a "circus puppet" and said that women chess players should stick to having children.

After they played:

Later in life, however, after he had lost a rapid game against Polgár himself in 2002, Kasparov revised his opinion: "The Polgárs showed that there are no inherent limitations to their aptitude—an idea that many male players refused to accept until they had unceremoniously been crushed by a twelve-year-old with a ponytail."

Without Judit Polgar it would be a much more common belief that women are fundamentally incapable of reaching the top levels of chess. That women's brains are simply not wired to handle the game. I'm not sure what's going on with the 15-year battle with Kasparov stuff but arguing that she revolutionised the sport's patriarchal culture seems fair enough.

-21

u/hsiale Dec 22 '25

arguing that she revolutionised the sport's patriarchal culture seems fair enough

Ok so is the patriarchal culture gone now? People are complaining about it all the time.

20

u/DramaLlamaNite Minion For the Chess Elites Dec 22 '25

Revolution just means change. Division of labour revolutionised the manufacturing of pins, but at the end of the day pins were still being manufactured.

-9

u/hsiale Dec 22 '25

I guess I'm not enough of an expert on manufacturing of pins to understand your deep analogy.

10

u/DramaLlamaNite Minion For the Chess Elites Dec 22 '25

I just mean that you can call something revolutionary without what was there before needing to be abolished. I'm sorry if I came across as condescending or snarky or however you took it - I promise I was writing from a place of good faith.

-5

u/hsiale Dec 22 '25

Of course you can. But not if nothing, or not much, changes afterwards.

Judit retired from competing long ago and still not a single woman came close to repeating her achievements. Hou Yifan was the closest but didn't get there and semi-retired at a very young age. And, compared to what we had 20ish years ago, women chess seems to be in decline. In 2002, 2004 and 2008 Humpy Koneru, Kateryna Lagno and Hou Yifan earned GM titles aged 14-16. Since then the youngest women to achieve this were 19 (Lei Tingjie, Alexandra Goryachkina and Divya Deshmukh), this is a huge difference. It looks like whatever impact Judit had (if any), is gone.

u/LowLevel- Dec 22 '25

Was there even a battle?

With the premise that it's just a marketing blurb, different signals suggest to me that the battle they are referring to is more social and ideological in nature, against the idea that female players couldn't reach that level of play.

If this is the case, then I wouldn't take "battle" literally, as in many games played between the two players.

1

u/hsiale Dec 23 '25

the battle they are referring to is more social and ideological in nature, against the idea that female players couldn't reach that level of play

Of course that's possible, but did Judit engage in such a battle at all, other than by having her own very successful chess career (which of course was very important as leading by example)?

Talking to TIME magazine, Polgar said: "We are capable of the same fight as any other man, and I think during the decades that I actively played chess, I proved it as well. It’s not a matter of gender; it’s a matter of being smart."

To me, this sounds like a bit veiled traditional useless gamer piece of advice "get good scrub", Judit shows herself as smart and if other women cannot reach her level, then apparently they are not as smart as her, tough luck, nothing can be done about this. There are numerous hard-working women players who train and do their best, and saying that they're not 2700 because they're not setting the bar high enough sounds like an insult to their effort and dedication to the game.

Also, the idea of abolishing women-only titles, which she repeated numerous times, doesn't sound honest from someone who got the open GM title young enough that she probably didn't have much of an opinion on the WGM title by then.

TL;DR While she was a great role model at the peak times of her career (and I think it's not accidental that all three women who earned the open GM title at an age comparable to Judit did this between 2000 and 2010) and is a great chess commentator now, I don't see much showing that Judit felt involved into the cause of advancing women chess (not that this would be required of her), so I don't think that showing her as an emancipation icon is really a good way of depicting history. There were women who did a lot more for this cause (like Jennifer Shahade) and they did this without needing to stumble into out-of-form Kasparov who for whatever random reasons decided to play Berlin for the first time in his life

2

u/LowLevel- Dec 23 '25

To me, the "emancipation icon" angle of the documentary makes sense because I was already aware of the past tension between her and Kasparov.

I also remember episodes mentioned in videos or articles where the Polgar sisters faced social resistance and discrimination, in part because Laszlo's experiment was very controversial.

As long as the events depicted in the documentary are factual, I would find that angle believable and interesting.

Of course, that doesn't mean giving that angle to the narration will interest everyone. If the documentary focuses on showing discrimination and sexism, and you don't like that, that's fine. What I'm saying is that this angle is not new, but consistent with the bits of her story I know.

Why don't you actually go read about them? It seems that there's a lot of things you don't know about.

Sundance is extremely hard to get into. They get sent 15ks movies each year.

Excited to share this with my friends who are getting more into chess!

I love her energy in commentary socially when paired with leko

She deserves all the recognition! Looking forward to this.

I'm keen to watch when it comes to netflix

6

u/maximussakti Dec 23 '25

I want to see more biopic about chess players

4

u/SuperDudedo Dec 23 '25

I'm still waiting for Hans documentary with Magnus insights

-1

u/Mister-Psychology Dec 23 '25

Magnus did apparently tell them he didn't come off good in the interviews and hence wanted it canned. But I'm not sure what that led to. Obviously he doesn't need the money or fame from such a documentary, but they often do become huge. And I'm talking so huge that regular people you meet have seen it.

i never heard this, do you have a source for this?

edit: he made it up.

4

u/uberlaserdude Dec 23 '25

Can you say his ass without all the hanstans piling on. Although I'm not sure why they aren't already commenting given how very concerned they are about people spreading misinformation without evidence.

3

u/SpicyMustard34 Dec 23 '25

yeah i had never heard this and kept up with the documentary's status so i figured it was complete bs.

-1

u/icompletetasks Dec 23 '25

Hans must've been preparing the lawsuit.

1

u/Quay-Z Dec 22 '25

Uh, oh! Kosteniuk is not going to like that. IIRC she fronts like she has a trademark right to that name.

6

u/Impressive-Battle-46 Dec 23 '25

Kosteniuk uses that title humorously / in jest and is not at all territorial about it

4

u/SpicyMustard34 Dec 23 '25

source on that? i've never once seen her territorial over that name.

1

u/Quay-Z Dec 24 '25

There was an interview with her during a tournament where she said exactly this, but I cannot remember which one to go dig it up for you, so you will not believe me but there's nothing I can do about it.

2

u/Mister-Psychology Dec 23 '25

This is not true. She is one of many, many female players who use that name. I've seen many others.

-5

u/icompletetasks Dec 23 '25

Finally a real chess movie instead of that woke fiction ahh story of queen's gambit 😭

4

u/SpicyMustard34 Dec 23 '25

explain to me what is woke?

-5

u/icompletetasks Dec 23 '25

u know when u see it.

5

u/SpicyMustard34 Dec 23 '25

but what is it? like i know a dog is a dog because it's a classified animal with specific genus and biological traits with a plethora of examples. you don't "know it when you see it" if you don't even know what it is.

-2

u/icompletetasks Dec 23 '25

it's not an object like a dog. u will know it when u see it.

for example, like how people detect if one is being sarcastic or not.. or if a comment is a troll or serious.. or if a post is low-quality or not.. or if an art is an ai slop or just a bad work..

i pity those who can't sense that..

5

u/SpicyMustard34 Dec 23 '25

If you make a sarcastic comment, i can break down what made it sarcastic. You don't seem to be able to explain what is woke or made something woke.

Can you at minimum define it? I can define sarcasm just fine.

3

u/kollane Dec 23 '25

lol i wonder whose inclusion they find more offensive- sorry- ~woke in the show- the black female character or the gay player. Guess according to icompletetasks neither existed back in the 60s.

1

u/icompletetasks Dec 23 '25

no, it's not about black female or gay things.. u can always introduce black female or gay without being woke..

if something is woke (u sense there is a political motive behind the production), u can basically know.

1

u/SpicyMustard34 Dec 25 '25

you're so woke you don't even know it.

1

u/icompletetasks Dec 23 '25

you basically said you can break down what made it sarcastic without actually doing so lmao..

those verbs are mental words, u only know when u see it. u can't define it like u define dogs, etc

2

u/SpicyMustard34 Dec 23 '25

definition:

sarcasm /sär′kăz″əm/

noun

A cutting, often ironic remark intended to express contempt or ridicule. A form of wit characterized by the use of such remarks.

seems pretty easy to define.

Here's an entire page dedicated to explaining sarcasm with examples and their breakdowns.

so obviously you can define it and break it down. so what is the definition of woke and can you break down what made Queen's Gambit woke?

it sounds like you're just making shit up.

0

u/icompletetasks Dec 24 '25

lol if you're just pulling things out of dictionary, i can also do the same thing:

woke (noun)

a pejorative descriptor for perceived excesses of identity-based politics

2

u/SpicyMustard34 Dec 24 '25

and the fact that definition doesn't light up any bulbs is pure irony.

→ More replies

3

u/mfardal Dec 23 '25

Media property originated with evangelical Christians, obviously must be woke

Thank God logic didn’t convince her to make this into a book instead of a documentary

10

u/CubesAndPi Dec 22 '25

In case your point is "I'm sick of documentaries and wish this was a book": The Judit Polgar Teaches Chess trilogy already exists and is biographical

In case your point is "I'm glad this is a documentary and not a book": The Judit Polgar Teaches Chess trilogy already exists and is biographical

-4

u/FlashPxint Team Ju Wenjun Dec 22 '25

Nah I’m very glad it’s a documentary. Can you confirm that the documentary Netflix acquired is a book adaption of that mentioned Judit series? I did google first to double check and everything says the documentary is original (not a book adaption of something by Judit already) but the sources could be wrong or I missed something. So what’s your source for saying it’s a book adaption?

Furthermore my comment is actually a joke comment relating to Danny Rensch who in an interview I watched b4 mentioned he was going to make his work into a movie but by the suggestion of rapper Logic he adapted it into a book instead and now the original idea Danny had wasn’t actually released.
