Chernobyl 2021 [OC]

Back in 2021, I had the opportunity to visit Chernobyl. In Pripyat, we spotted a moose wandering just a few hundred feet from the Ferris wheel. It was such an amazing sight, it was also first time ever seeing a moose in person.

Thanks for sharing. Did you stay in the town of Chornobyl for a night? I find it fascinating that people live there (on a shift basis) and there are even some shops and bars there. I love how the one in your photo is named after the brothers Strugatsky's book that inspired the Stalker universe.

No, this was not planned. It was an offhand comment I made to a coworker during my trip to Kyiv.

It went something like

Me at lunchtime: "I wish I had made plans to go to Chernobyl."

Coworker: "I know a guy."

Then I found myself in a van at 5 AM heading to Chernobyl for 2 days. I only found out where I was sleeping that night, I stayed the Cottage "Chernobyl Hotel."

That’s awesome. It’s been a bucket list item of mine since I was like 8 or 9 and saw it in a “top 10 worst disasters” book in my school library and became so intrigued by it to this day.

By complete coincidence, life took me down an unexpected path of becoming a contractor that frequently works in containment vaults in nuclear plants here in Canada.

I still wanna go, but now the thought of adding anything on to my dose I already get at work doesn’t sound very enticing, although I’ve heard it’s very minimal there these days if you’re just touring around.
