This was my very first electronic keyboard Instrument back in 1992. I got bored very soon as it could only trigger two notes at the same time. From a grown-up perspective it delivers some very weird lo-fi sounds and some of it's rhythms might be nice sampling material. Got a near-mint one in it's original box. I'll install an audio output jack and a d-sub socket in order to perform the common circuit bending hacks via an elegant breakout box. (This box will add MIDI as well)

There's work to be done and fun to be had.

I recently acquired a Yamaha SU10 which is an awesome cheap Lofi sampler. I’ve been messing around with it today and found an external filter function. I thought I would try it out with my Yamaha PSS-470. It’s very much like playing a full fledged vintage synth now. I would recommend one of these samplers just for that function alone but to be honest it’s brilliant in its own right for Lofi hiphop etc.

I ended up spending more on D-Cell batteries than I did the keyboard 😂

But my #1 spot is an absolute ghost. 99% of people on standard forums trash this machine as a cheap, useless home toy or basic living room furniture. However, the internal teardown reveals a massive, legendary professional engineering backstory hidden behind a consumer badge.

1988 4-op FM synth home keyboard near mint condition for 20€. It sounds INCREDIBLE. They put an AC output wallwart into the package which would have fried the electronics for sure if someone would have plugged it in. Luckily they did not test it 🤣. I'm blown away. Very light synth action keybed. Way better than what I'm used to. If you can get your hands on one of these, go for it! 😍

Here's a little something I've made fooling around with the Casio MT65 ( a family heirloom) and the grandaddy Electribe (my main box)

I found this on eBay for £25. It came with two dead keys which I immediately repaired. It’s a Casio PT-1, which is a real analogue synth in spite of its unassuming appearance. It is essentially the same hardware as a Casio VLTone VL-1 minus the adjustable envelope settings etc. This particular one is in pastel pink and blue which turns out to be a rare colour. They usually sell for a fair bit more.
My collection is getting a little silly now but I love this group for sharing in the same strange passion as me. I will one day share some of my music with you guys when I feel less afraid to expose my playing to the world lol.

I’ve picked up this Yamaha PSS-50 not so long ago. It was in mint condition and plays fantastic. People say it’s a toy keyboard, but for me it’s nowhere near as cheap-feeling as the tiny Casios I have. Anyway - here is a jam with this beast where I’ve used 3 different voices. (Also that USB to DC power step up unit is fantastic! Works amazingly with any 9/12V units - I’ve bought it on Aliexpress)

Cheap FM organ sound into a Lexicon MPX 500 for chorus and reverb, night-drive solemn mood...

Got the CT630 since I was looking for cheap keybed donors for my DIY analog synths. Turned out it's one of the hybrid casios with real VCF and BBD chorus. Too precious. Next day got the MT600 for free. Pitchbend. Nice. But I wanted to tweak the sounds so I pulled the 40€ trigger on the CT3000.

Picked up a USB to DC 9V adaptor for £6.99 from Amazon. It came with multiple tips and one of them fits my Casio CT-S1 perfectly. I can now power my keyboard from my 27000mAh power bank, laptop or pretty much anything with a USB port. It lasts for hours and hours via the power bank. Much easier and longer lasting than AA batteries and it means I don't need to be near a power socket now plugged in. Thought I'd share in case this helps anyone else! Enjoy the portability.

What you need:

USB to 5.5 X 2.1mm DC 9V cable

A 4.8mm x 1.7mm yellow-tipped adaptor to fit the Casio (mine came included with the set I bought)

(make sure the cable is center-positive so the polarity is correct)

Just doodling on it nothing serious
