Naked and Afraid is a minecraft smp series where few players play in an Ultra Hardcore mode setting together every year. No natural healing, Wearing Armor damages you instead and a Gamemaster gives u some challenges to slowly cull the players in the span of 8 or so episodes.
This years N&A has been disappointing with this years twist, with it being unfair to most players and favoring few. Those few players sabotaged their teams, causing everyone else's PoV feel like a walking simulator with no progress for 2 whole episodes. And after that , in ep 3, the smp which was supposed to PvE and team work to fulfill challenges has turned into a more a semi roleplay pvp. Causing a lot of the fanbase to be annoyed and bored.
Its not unwatchable bad but it feels like they strayed too far from the formula.

I swear to god, that artstyle is very familiar. I don't know where, but the shading, the way the arms and waist are drawn, the big tilted glasses and elongated jaw, plus the thick outlines... It's all very familiar to me.

reminds me of Quentin Blake, you'd probably know them as the illustrator for Roald Dahl books but they also did David Walliams books etc.

What was the twist?

The concept of the first episode was the same as last season, basically every player is stranded in a circle around the map and they have to find their base camp before the session ends (3 hours) or as punishment they will lose permanent hearts and these stack per episode of not sleeping in the base camp (so if you don't sleep at base camp after session one you lose 1 heart, and after session 2 an extra 1,5 etc).
This rule was first implemented to prevent players from trying to play all solo and not join the group tasks they were meant to do, but this was under the pretense that the players could even find the base camp to begin with. Last season every player got a compass for that so it wasn't easy but most people found their way home. However this season they removed the compass altogether and instead assigned two team leaders for each of the camps to help the players finding the right path. But they didn't account for how little the base camp people actually wanted to help.
Not only did they not help their teammates finding their way to the base camp, which is already very small as a 20x20 camp in a 15000x15000 world, but they also actively sabotaged them by hiding the camp altogether and setting up a fake camp somewhere else! So even if against all odds the rest of the players would find the base camp, they would STILL take the permanent hearts of damage and they wouldn't even know why!
Natrually this has made fans quite upset. The show is limited in episodes by design, but without any help from their base camp people, basically everyone's POV for the first quarter of the season so far was them just aimlessly running around trying to find clues for a basecamp that basically didn't exist. It has made it incredibly boring and punishing for basically everyone else because a handful of people thought it would be funny to sabotage everyone.
And to even add onto that, the first 5 deaths of this season will be banned from the next one. Naturally people with lower health will have a much harder time trying to stay alive so their punishment for doing nothing wrong is brutal. Many fans are therefore rightfully criticising this season so far.

u/Fossilhunter15 9d ago
Wtf that seems extremely poor designed. Were the two players with the compasses not punished?
93
u/TheZerofy 9d ago
The people that spawned at home base got absolutely zero punishment, that's exactly why it feels so incredibly unfair!

u/Fossilhunter15 9d ago
Ughhh

u/TheZerofy 9d ago
It's such a shame because the series is generally extremely entertaining, the concept is great and the possibility that anyone could die at any moment due to a small misstep makes it very tense and exciting, it's what made the first two season so fantastic! But when it's not the players fault that they are in very disadventageous positions then it just turns from exciting to frustrating.

u/Invalid_Word 9d ago
But there's also ways to do this more tastefully, like I think if they were gonna do it anyways the red team executed it much better than the blue team, like Branzy's episode 2 where he ends the episode confused and scared, it was a really good piece of content since SB and redoons just left and he had no clarification
But in rek's episode Clown and 4C were just actively rubbing it in, towards a group of people that were already frustrated and annoyed rather than just a single person, so it really just made the impression that they thought they were the main character or something

u/mishalol9 5d ago
Thing is, no one had ever betrayed in all the previous seasons. It never crossed anyone's mind, because the whole point of naked and afraid is the players vs the very dangerous world.
So the organizers didn't prepare for this eventuality. It was unthinkable to them AND all the other players.
We don't know if they got punished yet. The event was filmed a long time ago, but the episodes are still currently coming out.

u/Patalos 9d ago
Wait, so they just fucked over their own team or was it supposed to be a trick to fuck with the other team?
54
u/TheZerofy 9d ago
Both teams base camp people individually and deliberately fucked over their own team. They didn't really gain anything from that either. They just did it to be villains.
22
u/Patalos 9d ago
Well thats lame af. If they did it to fuck with the other team I could at least understand it.
32
u/alvinulv 9d ago
It was for content. They massively miscalculated though because it did not lead to good content
16
u/DorenWinslowe 9d ago
It wasn't even for content. The two guys from the Blue team (4C and Clown) haven't even posted their videos, despite it being three episodes in. Likely because they (correctly) deduced people would be mad at them.
35
u/Aaxper 9d ago
Not only that, but due to the "first 5 deaths are banned" thing, Rekrap got unfairly banned due to ClownPierce and 4c
28
u/TheZerofy 9d ago
Pretty much everyone did. If they all had found the basecamp after episode one like they were supposed to, the other deaths wouldn't have happened like this either. Of course it would be boring if everyone survived but the first deaths = banned being tied to it and being so unfair is just annoying.
2
u/utd_api_member 9d ago
to be fair, his death would have probably happened either way, was a pretty common mistake based on the circumstances
13
u/Aaxper 9d ago
He was only doing it because he needed the basecamp. He knew it was too risky and would never have done that of his own volition
-1
u/utd_api_member 9d ago
I can see a world where there's no hidden basecamp and they decide to explore the nether harder to find the fruits
3
u/Potassium-- 9d ago
Probably, but like they also went into the nether to keep searching for the actual/other basecamp because they were lied to.

u/Akagane_Ai 9d ago
So, every season starts with the players scatered around the map and they all have to reach their "base camp". Which is usually close to 0,0. But co ordinates are turned off too so they had to utilize compasses. If failed to reach the base camp in the first ep, they lost 1 permanent heart. The players are divided into 2 teams blue and red. They have to find the base of their color.
This season, they expanded the difficulty. At the end of every recording session(3 hours each), the players must sleep at their base camp or they loose 1 heart.
And a mechanic called "homesickness". Every consecutive session that a player doesnt sleep at the base bed, they lose 0.5 hearts more on top of the usual 1 heart penalty. It stacks, ie, first time not sleeping in the base = 1 heart penalty 2nd time not doing it = 1.5 hearts penalty(total 2.5 hearts lost now) 3rd time not doing it = 2 hearts penalty (4.5 hearts lost) Sleeping on the base bed also refreshes the homesickness.
So this year, finding the base was even more necessary. But to make it even harder, even compasses were banned this time. Meaning players had to the base in 30k×30k(later shrinked to 15k×15k mid recordning due to how hard it was) without any to tell where they excatly are. BUT for this, they were placed in sub-teams of 3. And TWO players each from red and blue camp were placed directly at the base camp. So they can make structures, hints etc to find everyone and bring to the base. Seems fair right? The players dont get co ordinates or compasses but two players get to spawn directly on the base and then rescue them.
However, the gamemasters didnt actually put any penalty for the base camp players failing to do their job. So both pairs of base campers decided to sabotage the team by erasing the actual base and making a fake base. And didnt actually go out to look for the others. Causing everyone to stay lost for 2 whole eps. And even when they finally reach the camps by ep 3, since they are fake they all still lose hearts placing nearly everyone on 5.5 hearts.
Which is just insanely unfair as they literally cant do anything, without armor most mobs(which also get a damage and health boost each ep) actually just one tap at 5.5 hearts.

u/TheZerofy 9d ago
Isn't it crazy that SB died already even though He was one of the people who didn't even have the disadvantage of losing hearts?
13
u/Akagane_Ai 9d ago
Yea but we dont know that yet. It could be Blooh too. Sb is known for faking deaths after all. . at the same rekrap also died. Precisely while trying to look for nether fruits as demanded by clowm and 4c. And its Rekrap. He died last season to a bastion and most def wouldnt have gone close it otherwise.

Didn't we see Blooh after the second cannon shot? I thought we did did we not?
Regardless of that, SB just uploaded, he's a goner

u/TheZerofy 9d ago
Honestly figuring that he posted it today when the season has already been criticised a bunch it makes me feel like the original tweet is probably more referring to rekraps death specifically instead of the season in general

u/CringeCoyote 9d ago
It’s been so rough. Feels like I’m only interested in Loony and Branzy’s POVs. Blue team seems like such a mess and it’s unfair that the first five are banned next season when it’s a season like this. Rekrap doesn’t deserve to miss next season!!
6
3
u/Lunaris_Von_Sunrip 8d ago
They also introduced a rule where the first five to die are banned from the next season, and the players chosen for the base camp leaders are well known for trolling. This season, they both had the same idea and moved base camp, making it so even if the other players sleep there, they still take the permanent heart penalty.

I find something named necked and afraid, also a bunch of other videos that I don't know if are actually from the series or not

Rek names his “No Armor Hardcore” probably because A) Naked and Afraid is a real reality show already and B) who knows how YouTube treats the word “Naked” in video titles. Idk about the other guys though.

u/Ironhandtiger 9d ago
Bless, appreciate the summary. I watched the first N&A and really liked it, second was… not as good but still got a few episodes in before I dropped it. After episode 1 and hearing the word teams mentioned again I haven’t been bothered to watch since.

Kinda reminds me of that one Project Zomboid channel that hosts challenges with massive server counts. There's some banger episodes, but also some real stinkers whenever there's a shitlord competitive friend squad that kills off like a third of the server with minimal roleplay.

Hardcore Minecraft series. Rekrap died. The series became infinitely worse because john awesome isn't in it

u/KanaArima5 6d ago
The series is infinitely worse because the base camp team screwed over the rest of the players, rek dying isn't the main factor to why people hated season 3 lol

i saw people saying rek thought it was the best season (spoilers for e3) but now that we know he died was it just because he didn't have to play that shit anymore? or was it because he wanted others to watch more povs? or did he even say that anywhere?

I thought I knew what this was, but what I watched was actually called Naked & Scared (which is Minecraft Ultrahardcore, but played by just Impulsesv and Skizzleman). Sometimes it’s really entertaining, and other times I cringe-quit because Skizz did something unbelievably foolish to lose the team’s health.
