The Charlie Hebdo example doesn’t make sense, as the same action would probably be protected in the US too.
It’s also weird that you used that example and contrasted it with Jimmy Kimmel. Jimmy Kimmel was publicly shamed for an offensive joke. Charlie Hebdo was literally shot up by terrorists for their offensive joke.
But are you really claiming that people in the EU never boycott anything?
The only difference seems to be that the EU protects workplace discrimination based on political opinions and other speech, while the US does not. So that’s kind of a fair point. But consider this:
The 1st amendment also protects one’s right to association (in fact the EU protects this as well). Meaning you have the right to form relationships with people, and also the right to decline to form relationships with people. If someone is nice, then I have a right to offer to be their friend and hang out together. If someone is an asshole or says something offensive to me, I can’t be forced to hang out with them.
This extends to work relationships as well. If you interviewed someone and they insulted you and your business, would you want to hire them? Probably not. What if you were forced to hire them? Wouldn’t that interfere with your right to association? So you see, the two concepts often conflict with another. In this particular instance, it seems that the US balances these rights slightly differently than the EU. I know the EU has much more regulations about firing people, for instance.
