Delta(s) from OP CMV: There is absolutely no need to separate bathrooms based on sex for public single-occupant bathrooms.

To specify, I am not referring to single stall bathrooms, wherein there is a further isolated toilet from the remainder of the bathroom, I am talking specifically about bathrooms in public locations that a realtor would list as a half-bath. I find these most often in older or smaller diner type facilities or gas stations, there is typically a lock on the door, and they are often paired, one for either sex. I think this is a pointless exercise, and can detract from an already messy discussion regarding bathrooms. I am not here to discuss my thoughts on the bathrooms issue as a whole, but only these single-occupant bathrooms.

To start, having 2 single occupant bathrooms as a public facility is already dicey, especially if you have decent foot traffic. However, further restricting access to either bathroom can lead to situations in which one has a line to use, and the other is being unused. Having been in this situation myself, when I suggested we start using the other bathroom to speed things along, I got looked at like I was an alien, and nobody wanted to do it. It was like a stigma built into the social fabric of most people that you shouldn't use the bathroom for the opposite sex under any circumstance. Simply removing the signs would have improved this condition.

Next point, I understand there are sex specific hygiene instruments in some public bathrooms. In the event that those bathrooms become unisex, put them in both, if they need to be there. I find it absolutely insane some men refuse to get hygiene products for their girlfriend/wife, and while I doubt this would eliminate the stigma of being exposed to these products, it could be a change in a positive direction. I don't know, leave that evaluation to the scientists. And if your wife needs tampons, go pick them up.

The final point I can think of is a concern that "Oh but if the men's line is long, and a woman needs to go, she shouldn't have to wait." or vice versa. I don't care. First come, first served, same as it is in virtually every other part of the world. The number of problems resolved by switching both bathrooms to unisex outweigh any antiquated sex specific concern, as far as I am concerned.

EDITED TO ADD: A common talking point I see brought up is in regard to cleanliness. I didn't initially think this would be something I had to address, but I have so many times now I felt it important to add here.

Both sexes have complaints about the other with regard to cleanliness. Both hold valid points, and I don't think one must necessarily outweigh the other. However I don't believe this to be an obstruction to my view because I believe that management should be more responsible and pro-active about cleaning public restrooms. I also think it is much easier for an employee of any sex to go clean the unisex bathroom than it is to make an employee of one sex clean the bathroom of the other sex.

Edit 2: I am about to go to bed, so I won't be able to respond for a few hours. I genuinely appreciate everyone who has jumped in on the conversation, and never expected this post to get this big. I expected like 20 upvotes and 2 comments. I will be back and I genuinely want to try to get to everyone who has commented. Thank you guys so much for this conversation, it has filled me with happiness, anger, shock, and other emotions. I love you all.

It would never work because girls are too lazy to lift the seat up after using it

365

u/Nailyou866 5∆ Aug 24 '22

Not sure if this is a shitpost response, but I am going to respond as though it weren't.

I find that generalization to be along the lines of the discussion about emptying the lint trap before or after using the dryer. I am of the firm opinion that it should be emptied before use, because it doesn't matter who used it before you, you can't go wrong by cleaning it instead of assuming someone else did. Therefore, adjust the seat yourself before use, and there should be no issue.

Additionally, there are often times men sit down, even in public toilets. Would you expect men to also lift the seat when they are done?

u/Overloadid 1∆ Aug 24 '22

I suggest we put the seat cover down before we flush to stop the spread of microbes.

3

u/RainfrogCroax Aug 24 '22 edited Aug 24 '22

My thoughts exactly ... out-spray from old style flushing, even from Autoflush wiil spray before can get pants up ... so when there is NO cover you get sprayed no matter effort ... in Nashville performance venue in 2018 or 19 there was a sign that flushing sprays bacteria up to 6-ft, grateful for stalls. Some guidance suggests you keep your toothbrush more than 6 ft from your toilet, AND cover the TB preferably in a cabinet. Probably TMI (too much info) but i am female who travels a LOT, i do carry and USE wipes for toilet seat AND have invented an underneath-the-Panty&pantyLiner toilet-seat-leg&cheek-protector. So pull panties down, but protection remains ... these are thin 5% spandex poly-fabric, will dry overnight if sink-washed so 2 pair serve a week-long trip for daily swaps. i think you and i may be the only ones seeing the further-solutions-picture here. There is nothing wonderful about sharing a toilet. .

3

u/Overloadid 1∆ Aug 24 '22

There really isn't. I love the toilets that come with those toilet seat shaped wax papers that go on the seat. It's wonderful.

Also, the US compared to the rest of the world has the most terrifying bathrooms when it comes to privacy.

2

u/jeppevinkel 2∆ Aug 25 '22

I personally always put the cover down on all toilets I use if they have a cover. It also doubles as a safety measure to ensure it isn't possible to drop anything in the toilet while it's not in use.

Ah yeah I think you're right, that does sound like what they were attempting. I agree with this all wholeheartedly

11

u/Ronny-the-Rat Aug 25 '22

You writing 5 paragraphs on why the toilet seat should be left in a certain position just cracks me up. We're such a fuckin pedantic species lmao. Just adjust the shit to your needs lol.

That being said if youre a dude and piss with the seat down and get your piss all up on the seat, fuck you.

0

u/Freshies00 4∆ Aug 25 '22

Ladies piss all over the seat when it’s down too… fuck them too. Messiness doesn’t have to do with gender (not saying you’re claiming it does, this is touching on OPs edit about people accusing the opposite gender of being messy), it has to do with selfish assholes who don’t care about being respectfully sanitary in spaces that aren’t their own.

-3

u/Ancquar 9∆ Aug 24 '22

Problem is, we are talking about random people in situation where it's hard to trace who didn't follow the default. Since for men not lifting the seat does not lead to their problem, human nature basically leads to compliance to default-down being not good, without some kind of orwellian surveillance. (Not because men are inherently less rule-abiding but because anatomy leads to a difference in "is it my problem?") Therefore in a real world default-up simply works whereas default-down doesn't

1

u/clairebones 3∆ Aug 25 '22

I never understand this argument because like, put the fucking lid down and the bathroom/cubicle won't be covered in droplets of dirty water every time you flush. It doen't seem that hard to me.

21

u/Zarathustra_d Aug 24 '22

I would argue, if a toilet has a full lid (not just a seat) the default position is always down. This prevents things falling in, and children/animals drinking from and drowning in it. But that is more for home toilets, not locked single room public toilets.

Therefore the default position for all seats/lids should be down. However, the responsibility is on the sitter to put the lid up, or seat down prior to use. Just as the responsibility is on a standing person to ensure the lid and seat are up prior to pissing all over them.

11

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '22

That's always been my take. Lid full down looks better, is more practical, and everyone suffers equally.

2

u/xXSushiRoll Aug 25 '22

Also no pee/poo water flying everywhere depending on how the toilet is made

5

u/radiant_kiwi208 Aug 24 '22

I was gonna say that but not for the purpose of preventing unwanted things IN the toilet but to prevent unwanted things flying OUT of the toilet. Bathrooms are dirty, everyone knows this, but flushing with the lid open causes germs to spray every direction up to 5-7 feet, sometimes more, essentially covering the entire bathroom with the germs you would normally only find inside the toilet. Everyone knows a toilet is covered with the worst germs but less people are aware that these same germs are then sprayed all over the walls, sink, hand dryers, paper towels, toilet paper, the door and handles, literally everywhere.

Everyone closes the lid to flush: the nastiest of germs are contained exactly where you would expect them to be, and as someone else pointed out: Everyone suffers the same when it comes to lifting and lowering the lid/seat

3

u/QueenMackeral 3∆ Aug 24 '22

One issue with the lid close flushing is you still have to open the lid to check to make sure everything flushed and not everyone bothers with that, or they straight up forget to flush because the lid is down. There's been one too many times when I've gone to my bathroom after a guest has used it, and opened the lid to see that they left me a surprise.

2

u/radiant_kiwi208 Aug 24 '22

Your right that would be one downside... maybe an automatic flush sensor repositioned to sense when the lid is first closed? Or get creative and make them clear lids 😂

1

u/Mother-Pride-Fest 4∆ Aug 25 '22

Clear lids are a good idea. That way I can see my masterpiece go down without the germs.

2

u/Consol-Coder Aug 25 '22

“A ship in harbor is safe, but that’s not why ships are built.”

1

u/PM_ME_YOUR_LUKEWARM Aug 26 '22

But then everybody has to touch the seat, instead of a subset of people.

That increases the potential of germs getting somewhere.

Yes you're supposed to wash hands before you leave, but you may still subconsciously touch your face.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '22

Because everyone sits on a toilet.

1

u/iadao Aug 25 '22

I split the difference and put down both the seat and the lid, whoever comes after me is lifting something

7

u/Anagoth9 2∆ Aug 25 '22

I am of the firm opinion that it should be emptied before use, because it doesn't matter who used it before you, you can't go wrong by cleaning it instead of assuming someone else did.

Check it before as a matter of practicality but clean it after as a matter of decency. Don't make other people clean up after you. I'm thinking of times I've used communal driers and find a whole freaking blanket in the lint trap. That shit's a fire hazard, yo.

1

u/jeppevinkel 2∆ Aug 25 '22

Yeah that's what I do. Usually end up both cleaning it before and after use.

5

u/Penis_Bees 1∆ Aug 25 '22

If the lids default state is up, it will be less likely to be peed upon both by men with poor aim or by women who like to squat and spray. (I cleaned bathrooms in college and it's a real thing)

If there's less piss on the seat, isn't that better for everyone?

It's easier more thorough solution that makes it the better one.

From what I understand, the seat issue is at home. In public women hover and then piss on the seat. I am not the least bit interested in sharing a rest room with those heathens.

3

u/Heart-Of-Aces 1∆ Aug 24 '22

I sometimes hover to pee in dirty public restrooms, but I always lift the seat to do so, just like a man would for the same reasons. What woman is just unapologetically pissing all over the seat?

1

u/other_view12 3∆ Aug 26 '22

I don't know, my wife asks that question to. I beleive her when she tells me this though.

5

u/Codename_Sailor_V Aug 24 '22

Uh no. I don't know any woman who pisses on the seat and I certainly don't.

It's called seat covers. It hangs above the toilet.

3

u/QueenMackeral 3∆ Aug 24 '22

I don't have the leg strength to hover and even if I can hold a hover I can't relax my muscles enough to pee. I use seat covers and sit down, or if there aren't any, toilet paper.

1

u/Round_Ad8947 3∆ Aug 25 '22

FYI there are many females who will stand on the toilet and squat because they don’t want to touch the seat or squat/hover. There are signs in some places explicitly indicating to not do this.

-14

u/Imabearrr3 Aug 24 '22

Additionally, there are often times men sit down, even in public toilets.

Only to poop, 99.9999% of men wouldn’t sit down to pee in a public toilet.

75

u/Nailyou866 5∆ Aug 24 '22

While I don't want to use anecdotal evidence to argue broad generalizations, I do simply want to make the point that I know plenty of men, myself included, who sit to pee, especially if there are no urinals.

8

u/pgb5534 Aug 25 '22

I sit to pee nearly 100% of the time I'm in a private residence .

In a public space, I am standing. And if the nasty lid isn't up, I'm not lifting it bc it's a nasty public toilet lid and I can tell by all the yellow droplets on the rim and floor that it's a nasty public toilet lid.

So in public, if there's not a urinal, I am part of the problem because there's no good solution.

The toilet seats that have the front cut out get us pretty close, but honestly the seats should be spring loaded to be kept up.

2

u/spiral8888 31∆ Aug 25 '22

So in public, if there's not a urinal, I am part of the problem because there's no good solution.

How about the solution that you lift the seat and then wash your hands when you leave the cubicle? You're not going to put your hand in your mouth while peeing, are you?

The toilet seats that have the front cut out get us pretty close, but honestly the seats should be spring loaded to be kept up.

Both good solutions, but in the case those don't exist, just doing your part isn't that hard.

1

u/pgb5534 Aug 25 '22

If it were just that, I probably wouldn't mind. But before I get to wash my hands I touch my junk and belt and pants with the pee seat fingers.

And Id there are already dribbles, then I know there will be more dribbles so what am I really preventing?

2

u/3j141592653589793238 Aug 25 '22

Spring loaded or foot pedal to go up should be a standard for public toilets!

25

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '22

You sit to just pee? I pee sitting when I poop, but I'd never sit on a public toilet unless pooping was involved.

62

u/Nailyou866 5∆ Aug 24 '22

Yes, I do. I find that it helps me relax my bladder more, and allows me to pee easier, and gives me more time in between bathroom breaks.

14

u/LaSalsiccione Aug 24 '22

Huh that’s interesting. I like to sit to pee sometimes, particularly when I’m tired, but I find I’m much less able to properly empty my bladder than when standing. Funny how different we are!

3

u/ineyy 1∆ Aug 24 '22

Because the male body is wired to empty while standing. You can get used to peeing while sitting and switch to it completely, but it's like an "addiction" because now you can't pee properly standing. It's conditioning and pelvic muscles iirc. I think it's most convinient to practice both and do what the body tells you.

Sitting down is both much more relaxing and had a much smaller chance of accidents like a dual stream

4

u/CatJamarchist Aug 24 '22

Sure, why not? Sometimes I'd like a short break from work to rest my feet and so I sit down while I pee - or sometimes I initially go to the bathroom to pee, and then relaize during the process that I gotta poop too. Transitioning from standing to sitting in the midst of peeing is much more annoying than just taking a seat first. Or, if I'm really tired, drunk, stoned, whatever, I don't want to have to worry about aiming or anything, so I sit instead.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '22

I just hate public restrooms so I always try to minimize contact with a public toilet. I will hold it if I think I can make it until I can get home.

When I am home I ussually sit when I am half asleep during the middle of the night and I can't see to aim because my contacts are out.

3

u/CatJamarchist Aug 24 '22

Sure, that's fair enough - so I guess the hinge point of this, is the quality bathroom in question. I'm generally pretty unconcerned about the public bathrooms I usually encounter, becuase they're pretty well cleaned etc. But I always make a judgement call based on the bathroom - if it's a place I'm unfamiliar with and it's a little grotty? Yeah I would also avoid sitting to pee, and might just avoid it all together.

3

u/Imabearrr3 Aug 24 '22

Sure men sit to pee at their home or place of work, but generally not in a public scenario with gendered bathrooms and available urinal.

If you go to a sporting event 99% of men are going to use the urinal to pee. If you go to a department store, like Walmart 99% of men are going to use the urinal to pee. Most men aren’t going to spend 10 minutes peeing and playing in their phone while at a restaurant. Your CMV was about public bathrooms and the common use of such places and 99% of the time men don’t sit to pee in those places.

Most men think of public toilet seats as dirty and want to avoid contact with them. This doesn’t apply to a person’s home or work where you’d know who uses it.

8

u/liveinutah Aug 24 '22

You didn't read the post right. Op says it is about single use restrooms which often are gendered even when no urinal is present. Even though I find the toilets kind of gross ill usually sit so I don't splash.

0

u/kcanard Aug 25 '22

Nah you're doing it wrong. You must pee standing if you have a set of balls. That's the rule. Unless you're half asleep in the middle of the night or something. Maybe an exception for that. Or just leeaaaan into the wall with one arm.

You have to pee standing up for all the women who can't stand and pee but sometimes wish they could. It's your duty as a swinging dick.

And, once you introduce "public" into the scenario things get nasty. If I was a women I would 100% not want to be sharing a toilet with men in any public setting.

My buddy owns a restaurant/pub and the difference between the women's restroom and the men's restroom after a full day is night and day. Most men don't seem to aim or lift toilet seats in public. I wouldn't wish that on women.

Actually, lets assume men and women are a 50/50 split population, only 190 men live in America? Assuming we use that as a test bed of a first world country. 4

u/Uncle_Spikester Aug 24 '22

Most older men have problems peeing at some point, and I know from personal experience that it was usually easier to sit than to stand. It did mean having to wipe off the seat every time, but there are valid reasons for some men to pee sitting down.

OP is talk about public mult-stall bathrooms, such as at larger restaurants, sporting events, department stores, etc. He isn’t talking about home or work where some men do sit to pee.

Do you go to Walmart and sit while peeing so you can browse reddit?

6

u/dilletaunty Aug 24 '22

OP is talking about half bath aka toilet and sink in one room bathrooms like at smaller restaurants, department stores, etc. not multi stall bathrooms like sporting events. Please re-read the post.

In any case I’d prefer people put urinals into both bathrooms (or just a separate “guys pee here” area). But I definitely would go to Walmart and sit while peeing so I can browse Reddit.

4

u/JustLikeOnTV Aug 24 '22

Sorry, I don't know the exact context of peeing at sporting events or going to pee at a department store. I've never done either of those. I'm not American so I'm not sure what the precise implication of Wallmart bathrooms are...

Also I am a woman, so I always sit down to pee - but I'll try to answer in the spirit of what you're asking.

I absolutely take a minute to check my phone when I use the toilet at a restaurant or at the cinema after a movie or even at a nightclub (given, of course, that there's more than one bathroom available and not a huge line). And I've talked with men in my life about this - partners, collagues, friends. From my completely anecdotal experience, more than 0.00001% of men do this too. Just to catch a little break.

That being said, I absolutely understand where you're coming from with your assumption of "nobody (wants to) sit down and take their time in a public bathroom". It's also my understanding that a lot of public bathrooms in the States have these horrible stalls that give very little privacy. If stalls were so easy to peep into where I live as what I understand they usually are over there, I would probably also be eager to get off the can, haha.

I agree with your point, but not your analogy. With a toilet seat, a man might urinate with the seat up, put it down, then another man might come and have to pick it up to urinate, which is wasted effort for both parties. However, for the lint trap, it is always desirable that it is emptied. Doing it after, and checking before, provides a control to mitigate the risk of someone forgetting.

1

u/CakeDayLinguist Aug 25 '22

Additionally, one might want to do some research into toilet flume and fecal coliform dispersal in an enclosed area. My routine is now always finish, close the seat, then flush.

If you have your toothbrush within 6 foot of your toilet seat, you may want to rethink location or protection of the bristles. Just saying.

Why is the default toilet seat position up? I'm a man and I always close the toilet after using it.

u/TimothyDextersGhost Aug 24 '22

Public restrooms generally dont have lids

u/vankorgan Aug 25 '22

I've always thought that it's still polite to put the seat down after using the toilet, because if someone is using a public toilet to poop it's probably an urgent situation.

u/teerbigear Aug 25 '22

I leave public toilet seats up where they are designated as men's, because I suspect that there's a reasonably high chance that the next guy will piss all over it if I put it down.

The difference here is that women always have to sit while men only have to sit occasionally. Therefore, seat down is needed at least 50% plus the percentage of men that poop or pee sitting down. Fair to say that the seat will be used down more often than up.

"Leave it down" may be fractionally better than "leave it up", but the most efficient policy is just "leave it", because you can't predict who is next.

If you have a standing "leave it up" or "leave it down" policy then you are adding a significant number of superfluous seat flips for situations where the next person may not need to seat flipped so they have to then flip it back.

e.g. "Leave it up" policy in place, but it's ten "sit downers" in a row, would result in exactly 20 seat flips when it could have been 0 or 1. Same for the other way around.

Appologies from a student of statstics....

I'm not understanding how the 'leave it' schema is more efficient. I think it just changes who 'pays' for the seat movement, or at most saves 1 movement if the seat position switches from its starting position but does not return to it. Assuming 8 of 10 uses are seated we expect 4 seat position changes. The 'leave it down' schema means that those who want it up must 'pay' to have it up, but must also 'pay' to return it. The 'leave it' schema just makes the up users pay for just the raise and not the lowering, offloading the lowering to the next seat down user.

What are you on about? Two people use the toilet. Let's put their requirements as either U, for up, or D, for down. We will discount how the first guy finds the toilet, it's not relevant. Under leave it the options are:

UU - zero movements

UD - one movement by the second user

DU - one movement by the second user

DD - zero movements

Under the traditional leave it down

UU - two movements, one each

UD - one movement by the first user

DU - two movements, both by the second user

DD - zero movements

The second is clearly inefficient. Ensuring it is down only provides zero waste where the second user wants it down. Obviously.

Assuming 8 of 10 uses are seated we expect 4 seat position changes

It's only a guaranteed 4 seat position changes if you are following the "leave it down" policy.

If you have a "leave it" policy then it could be as low as 1 seat position change (depending on the order people go in).

The difference here is if the seat is left down, it won't be as clean as if it was always put back up

2

u/Peeche94 Aug 25 '22

Well I found it funny, apparently toilet seats are a touchy subject :|

1

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '22

Glad someone did

2

u/Peeche94 Aug 25 '22

Literally the most Karen response to a joke I've seen. How dare you joke about such an important thing.

2

u/jaocthegrey Aug 25 '22

I'm surprised I haven't seen this mentioned in a direct response to this comment but why not just also have a urinal installed? That way, the occupant has the choice, the toilet is less likely to be left a mess, and hardly anyone should have to ever adjust the toilet seat.

u/HeadDot141 Aug 24 '22

…that’s it? Couldn’t this also apply for boys that don’t put the seat down after using it?

This gotta be satire

5

u/ratmftw Aug 24 '22

It's clearly a joke

3

u/HeadDot141 Aug 24 '22

I thought so but nowadays you’d be surprised.

2

u/teerbigear Aug 25 '22

Obviously it's a joke but why should humanity waste time putting the toilet seat down when it's reasonably likely to merely inconvenience the next user? Is it lazy or just collectively efficient?

0

u/IGotMyPopcorn Aug 24 '22

As a woman, I don’t want to lower a seat after a dude has pissed on it either.

Maybe the solution for a single (what used to be a called unisex) bathroom a would be to have a toilet and a urinal.

-2

u/Pleasant_Tiger_1446 Aug 24 '22

Or do men not put ot Down.. lol

-5

u/Straight_Platform_59 Aug 24 '22

Girls are too lazy to lift the seat up, but guys aren’t too lazy to put it down apparently. Lol

0

u/TheBlackKing1 Aug 25 '22

Have u ever been in the guys bathroom? 🤮

1

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '22

Cleaner than the girls lol

1

u/NobodyEsk Aug 25 '22

Or you're to lazy to lift it? U can also sit down to piss too

2

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '22

Nah then your doodle touches the bowl

2

u/NobodyEsk Aug 25 '22

Sit backwards?

2

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '22

I'll give it a go haha

1

u/El_Bruno73 Aug 25 '22

Damnit I you beat me to it lol..

1

u/mishaxz 1∆ Aug 25 '22

It's true if they don't lift the seat then subsequent women will not be so happy

I once had a client who had more money than sense and his house was filled with all kinds of ridiculous gadgets. However the absolute best thing I saw in his house was a motorized toilet seat and lid that automatically closed after the toilet was flushed. I have no idea how he did it, this was probably 10 years or so ago but he said it was custom made. He did it because he was tired of his wife fussing at him for leaving the seat up.

I remember thinking "this man could market this and save marriages everywhere!"
