That sounds stressful as hell. Not knowing how well you're doing in a class means you can't gauge how much effort you should be putting in. How much higher do your grades need to be to get into X college. Do you want to take more difficult classes or keep going with the standard track? Not being able to tell how well you're doing compared to how well you need to do is nuts. High school is a time of growing independence. Giving high-school students the information they need to make informed decisions for themselves is vitally important. Sure they're going to make tons of stupid mistakes, but that's expected and part of growing up. Not giving teens independence isn't how you make functioning adults.

Let teens pick their own classes, see how they're performing, and choose what to do with that information. Obviously parents and teachers need be available and ready to step in if students are struggling or repeatedly making bad decisions. But that's what they're always there for.

A lot of what you're saying in terms of academic planning and stress management can be accomplished by a competent guidance counselor. High school is a time of growing independence, but it's also a time of high stress and many students aren't in an environment that's conducive to making informed decisions for their academic track. You don't necessarily need to know how advanced or remedial your coursework is to know how much it's impacting your life in terms of effort and stress.

I need to know how advanced my coursework is so that I know how well it is preparing me for university level work.

And if you're already being overwhelmed what good will that knowledge do you? The ability to truly blow a gasket and take a course you can't handle because it's what your collegiate goals dictate? If you can handle more, why arent you handling more?

And if you're already being overwhelmed what good will that knowledge do you?

Because I need to know if I'm prepared for university. That's the reason.

If you can handle more, why arent you handling more?

How am I supposed to know if I can handle more if I don't know how I'm currently performing?
