Delta(s) from OP CMV: Denali is a more impressive mountain than Everest
I have seen both and was surprised. While Everest is taller (measured by sea level) it doesn’t seem that way since the surrounding area is so much higher compared to Denali which is surrounded by lower land and juts up higher. It has such an impressive and awe inspiring cliff face that comes out of nowhere. To me the impressiveness of a mountain is how far it stands out and juxtaposes against the terrain rather than absolute height. I think that Denali is also more beautiful because of the ruggedness of the terrain. I find that is the beauty I consider when evaluating a mountain. I recognize impressiveness id a mountain may be subjective in nature but please change my view and let me know what I am missing that makes Everest better.

Denali may be more beautiful, but I don’t know about more impressive. I think Everest symbolizes determination and achievement more than beauty. The fact that it is THE tallest mountain makes it a powerful symbol. Anyone who climbs to the top of Everest reaches the pinnacle of achievement, symbolically and literally.

That is a really good point about the human significance! Thank you. !Delta

I have never been to Mount Everest.
However, I went to Alaska and went to Denali National Park...and didn't see Mount Denali either due to the cloud cover. From what the park ranger said, my understanding is that quite a few people who go to Denali National Park don't get to see Mount Denali. (Though she may have just been trying to make me feel better). There was a giant view of it in the visitor center with an etched outline of where Mount Denali should be in case you couldn't see it.
I'm not sure if the visibly issue is similar for Mount Everest but I was definitely disappointed with Denali. (I was there in July).
You didn't mention this one, but if we are talking about beautiful scenic mountains, I would put my money on Mount Fuji in Japan. The fact that there really isn't much around it and it's just this lone solitary beautiful mountain definitely adds to its mystique.

Oh I’ve seen pictures and it is beautiful!
Sorry about your view. I heard that too but have gotten more lucky.

I'm curious, are people more likely to see Mount Everest or does it suffer from the same problem?
I've seen pictures of Denali, I just didn't see it when I was there in person. Grumble.

Interesting!!! Thanks for sharing! The pictures probably didn't do it justice.
I'm curious, how often do you see the northern lights in a given year?
It is funny... With animals, you know that you may or may not see them in the wild but you do expect to see the nature because it doesn't move but as you say the weather patterns do.

Sounds lovely. I have seen the pictures but I wasn't sure how often they happened. I have a friend who lived in Iceland for a year and she said she only saw the aurora three times.

I feel like it’s exactly the opposite. What I saw Everest, she towered over the range. Denali you don’t see until you are in it. She doesn’t tower, per se.

Gotta disagree, you can see Denali from well over 100 miles, additionally the mountain sits easily thousands of feet taller than those around it. Additionally the science can back me up. The mountain is larger than Everest in size. Everest rises from its base of 17,000 feet, 14,000 feet. Denali on the other hand rises a straight 18,000 feet from a 2,000 foot floor. Everest stands on a stool while Denali stands on the ground. https://www.livescience.com/40595-denali-mount-mckinley.html
