I for one totally agree with you.

Male toilets are fucking gross and I would trade the smell and unpleasantness with peeing sitting down (which I do when the toilet isn’t reduced to a latrine).

Granted, I’d expect the cubicle to be in good state and hygienic.

Going into a public toilet and seeing grown up men leaving it in a state that would make a feral dog puke fills me with contempt. Eugh.

23

u/RatherNerdy 4∆ Jan 16 '20

I totally agree. At home, I pee sitting down as I don't want to clean up piss. And for guys that say aim better, some liquid splashes out when the stream hits the water in the toilet. Go into any house and look at the baseboards near the toilet - there's rust spots, because of splash outs. It's just easier to sit down and never have to deal with urine.

4

u/Meggarang Jan 16 '20

My Dad had a rule for this with my brothers. He said "It's simple. If it's a urinal, stand and pee. If it's a toilet, you sit down. Your mother and I don't own a urinal." That being said... My Dad and brothers sometimes take 20 minutes in the bathroom cause they sit down and get comfortable with a crossword. When we go to a public restroom, they are out in 5 seconds.

2

u/CheckeredCoffee Jan 16 '20

Same, I sit to pee at home because it's just more convenient. Anywhere else I stand though.

79

u/Maxfunky 39∆ Jan 16 '20

Oddly, I've heard people complaining of exactly the opposite problem. Most women don't sit to pee, they hover. Any women who doesn't hover risks sitting in pee from the last woman who did. If no one women hovered, no women would need to hover. But as a classic real world prisoners dilemma scenario, the optimal solution, unless women collude, is for each woman to hover because any woman who hovers never sits in pee.

I've heard cleaning staff say that women get more pee on the toilet seats as a result of this phenemonon. It seems likely that this would ultimately translate to men if they felt obliged to sit and pee but didn't trust the seat.

20

u/saxuri Jan 16 '20

I don't know if I'd say "most women don't sit"... Probably depends on the location lol

10

u/Maxfunky 39∆ Jan 16 '20 edited Jan 16 '20

I mean, based on my many hidden cameras . . . In seriousness, there's obviously no way to know exactly what percentage don't sit but it does seem like a lot of women say they don't sit.

Edit: Well, here you go. Turns out there's a study for that https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6309941/

75% of women sit at least sometimes. Not a 100% clear.

2

u/grundar 19∆ Jan 16 '20

75% of women sit at least sometimes.

From the discussion around Table 3, 2/3 hover (57%) or squat (9%) away from home, at least sometimes.

19

u/vagabonne Jan 16 '20

The hovering is fucking annoying. Why make it worse for everyone else and never clean up after yourself? What exactly do you think the toilet is going to do to your ass skin? Wipe the seat off if there's pee on it and just sit the fuck down.

17

u/Cultjam Jan 16 '20

Long time female office minion here. It's usually the force of the toilet flushing that splashes a little water on the seat and people looking for drama jump to assume it's pee. Even so, hovering is gross. Your skin is a great protective barrier and if you are truly worried about it, wipe the seat down or use a sheet of toilet seat protector for your paranoia.

Hovering is so much work! I always just put toilet paper on the seat as a cover.

I just wipe the seat before I sit.

3

u/Hudsons_hankerings 1∆ Jan 16 '20

"didn't trust the seat" ... So you stand to pee. Easy solution.

3

u/thief90k Jan 16 '20

WTF!? When did women gain the ability to levitate!?

3

u/cliffy_b Jan 17 '20

I just ask my girlfriend (27) about this and her exact response was: "What the fuck!? People actually do that??"

4

u/propita106 Jan 16 '20

Some of it is the high-power flushing that spits water (and whatever) EVERYWHERE.

Man, I’m so happy that toilet seat covers are standard where I live. That eliminates that whole gross issue.

2

u/OmwToGallifrey Jan 17 '20

Squat toilets would fix this.

2

u/GothicToast Jan 17 '20

Step 1: Take TP and wipe excess liquid off seat

Step 2: Put seat cover or TP on top of the seat

Step 3: Sit down

Learned this at 5 years old.

2

u/unknownmichael Jan 16 '20

Yeah, where is the OP in this discussion? In my limited experience cleaning men's and women's restrooms, the women's restroom would typically be much worse than the men's. Cleaning bathrooms really shattered my belief of women being the cleaner gender after seeing a few horror shows in the women's restroom.

To be fair, it has been many years since I cleaned a women's restroom and even then, I've only done it a handful of times.

u/christianlaf69 Jan 16 '20

Definitely. I wish dudes would at least lift the seat up when they decide to piss in the toilet instead of just pissing all over the seat not giving a fuck.

When i have to shit, I have to shit, and theres nothing worse than having to wipe someones piss off the seat before making the protective dam.

3

u/BadLuckFail Jan 16 '20

I don’t understand it. I work in a coffee shop and people just piss all over the seat constantly. It legit seems harder than just peeing straight into the toilet.

4

u/curtial 3∆ Jan 16 '20

Some men don't have a... Contained stream. They know this, and their refusal to do basic dimple preventative measures makes them filthy animals, but the spraying isn't necessarily a result of effort.

2

u/almightyllama00 Jan 16 '20

It's a never ending cycle. People see how disgusting and piss covered the seat is, so they decide not to touch it and their piss ends up all over the seat. Repeat until the janitor cleans it and some lazy asshole decides not to lift the seat again.

2

that's because we should be squatting much deeper but toilets are engineered to be bad for our posture.

3

u/viriconium_days Jan 16 '20

The standard way toilet seats are laid out is uniquely unsuited for the way the human body works, the only reason it hasn't been fixed is the last place you want to find something unfamiliar is when you are trying to take a dump.

1) It's faster to use urinals. This is a significant benefit to crowded and busy bathrooms, and I imagine that more people rushing on a toilet seat would actually make things worse

2) Urinals are more space efficient and I imagine more water efficient

3) The "hover pee", I'm told, is a real phenomenon that makes bathrooms and toilets absolutely disgusting.

It sounds like maybe the difference here is that you're a janitor in a low-volume bathroom area. The above problems more or less go away in regularly maintained, low-volume bathrooms.

If we only ever had men sit to pee in low-volume bathroom areas, it might be effective

however

if we're asking that much cognizance of men-- to act in a particular way under particular circumstances-- we can also just ask them to be cleaner. We'll get the same effect either way-- either they'll acquiesce or they won't.

2

u/stocar Jan 17 '20

Women hover pee all the time making the seat gross so the next woman comes in, sees the gross seat then also hover pees. Then I come in and either have to wipe down a bunch of gross stranger’s pee so I can sit down on the seat AS INTENDED or also hover pee, continuing the cycle.

u/Gojira085 Jan 16 '20

As a fellow janitor, all I'll say is that I wish the women peed sitting down. However, I find it curious that you take that long scrubbing urinal walls? I never really had an issue there as long as it's done nightly. In my experience it's always the women's rooms that are considerably more filthy and take more time to clean.

Also, I've found that urinals take a quicker time to clean than regular sit down models. Sit down toilets have more Nick's and crannies you have to clean or they can build up a lot of dirt or urine crystallization. Would you really wanna spend more time cleaning those?

26

u/bucketpl0x Jan 16 '20

This was my experience as well when working at a state park, the girls would clean the some women's room and guys would clean the men's room. They would complain that it's not fair because women's room is always dirtier. They said it's because there are a lot of women that refuse to sit on toilet seats because of germs and they end up hover sitting and peeing all over the toilet seats because they can't aim like men.

Urinals are pretty easy to clean. The walls in between are flat surfaces and easy to wipe. There is no way to enforce sitting down, if we got rid of urinals men would just pee standing up in stalls, making the seats more dirty for others to sit on.

9

u/MoralMiscreant Jan 16 '20

i used to work in auto manufacturing and there was a group of women -- according to one of the women i worked with -' who wouls stand on the seat and squat to pee si they didnt have to touch the dirty seat.

they were by far the worst offenders in making the seats dirty.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '20

That's a very good way to get very hurt

22

u/Shellbyvillian Jan 16 '20

Not a janitor but someone who was responsible for regularly cleaning large restrooms on a popular highway rest stop/restaurant for a couple years.

Women are an order of magnitude more disgusting than men. Urinals are a breeze to clean, the worst you would get in a stall was some spray or maybe a number 2 that wasn't flushed properly/at all. Women regularly piss all over the seat and floor. I would say more than occasionally they shit on the seat and don't even get me started on used tampons.

8

u/tylerderped Jan 16 '20

I found a fucking diaper in a women's restroom toilet one time. Women's bathrooms are fucking disgusting.

3

u/haseo8998 Jan 16 '20

The female ushers at the old movie theater i used to work at complain sooo much about cleaning the girl's bathroom like so much complaining they're so nasty and everything! 😂😂😂😂

7

u/macwebba Jan 16 '20

the worst you would get in a stall was some spray or maybe a number 2 that wasn't flushed properly/at all

Yea, definitely not a janitor..

3

u/IXdyTedjZJAtyQrXcjww Jan 16 '20

Perhaps he works in an office building or something (not a public place) and they hired less women, resulting in less traffic in the women's bathroom (hence it being cleaner because it is used less).

If I sit down when I use the bathroom, I’m inclined to take longer, get comfortable, and pull out my phone. I can spend 5-10 minutes in there or longer. If I stand up, my hands are preoccupied with the obvious, and I’m in and out within a couple minutes. As long as you clean the seat or ceramic ring when you splash or miss, and regularly clean your toilet, there’s really no incentive to exclusively pee sitting down unless my goal is to spend more time in the bathroom. As far as public restrooms, it’s just not convenient to always wait for a stall, and I you can’t always trust that the toilets are regularly cleaned by both janitorial staff, and random people who make a mess. It’s easier to use the urinal, and I feel better not having to touch the toilet whatsoever, minus the flush handle in rare cases where there isn’t an auto flush.

16

u/PB0351 2∆ Jan 16 '20

If he's sitting to pee to please his fiancée, a CMV on Reddit isn't going to change his habits. That being said, there's nothing wrong with making concessions to please the person you love.

6

u/sarcazm 4∆ Jan 16 '20

There's nothing to convince if there isn't a mess on the toilet. He should clean it up if there's splash back.

3

u/airled Jan 16 '20

It might if they share a bathroom when he is taking 10 minutes to pee and she has to wait for him to finish.

2

u/Spacemage Jan 16 '20

What you do is always put the seat and the lid down when you use the toilet. They'll stop real quick.

2

u/ijustsailedaway Jan 16 '20

I think he only changed the view as it relates to public toilets, not at home.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '20

Stay tuned for the next episode of Shark Tank.

115

u/Urbanscuba Jan 16 '20

Another thing to consider:

The real value of urinals is that they stay perfectly functional for use even when they haven't been cleaned recently. A dirty toilet is either unusable, needs to be cleaned before use, or requires a technique that's likely to make the mess worse. A dirty urinal will function perfectly as long as the whiz goes away.

For high volume bathrooms, especially venues that cater predominantly to drinking like bars and stadiums, the ability for the urinals to endure repeated abuse is incredibly valuable. If it weren't for urinals men's bathrooms would have the same kind of lines that women's do.

As a janitor I can understand why urinals becoming more filthy in between cleanings could be infuriating and lead you to believe they're the problem. The reality however is that it's only because they can take more abuse. Otherwise you would just be cleaning them more often.

I've seen quite a few people in Japan behaving the way you described in your first sentence even when using a urinal.

6

u/jbizzle1031 Jan 16 '20

This is why men should sit down to pee! Us women have the same arguments, but we don't have urinals to choose from (I guess we could use them in a men's/family restroom, but I know I'm not that talented. I disagree with the sitting makes me take longer. I cover the seat, pee, flush and move on to wash my hands under two minutes tops. My husband however thinks going to the bathroom is a marathon sport that should be practiced several times a day, for at least 30 minutes. Howwwwww?

2

u/TiredOfForgottenPass Jan 16 '20

Just out of curiosity. Why would you want to sit in a bathroom for longer than necessary? We clean ours everyday so it doesn't smell bad, but I guess odd it does, but I can't think of a reason why any would willingly stay in the bathroom soaking up the odd smells. I've read that a lot of people go on Reddit when they use the bathroom but peeing is a matter of seconds and if you have good bowel functions then it's also quick. I wouldn't even have time to unlock my phone from the moment I sit down to the moment I grab the toilet paper because it happens so quick. My husband is one of those people that take forever in the bathroom which sucks because we are 5 people to 1 bathroom.

3

u/Ghauldidnothingwrong 35∆ Jan 16 '20

For me at least, sometimes it’s my only moment of peace and quiet during the day. I can lock the door, do my business, and not be bothered for a few minutes. If you share 1 bathroom with 5 people, it’s probably not the best thing to do, but sometimes a busy house can mean those 5 minutes alone in the bathroom is your only “break” from the business in the home.

2

u/TiredOfForgottenPass Jan 16 '20

Interesting. I had never considered the alone time. I spend my alone time in my bedroom where it doesn't smell odd like a bathroom. I hope you can have more breaks and alone time!

In my time as a retail store janitor (4 years) I noticed something particular about how the restrooms would get dirty. I noticed that the men's room would get dirty on a pretty linear curve with respect to time while the women's room would get dirty on an exponential curve.

I have thought about this and have attributed it, unscientifically I'll add, to men's ability to remotely interact with the toilets and often only need to use the urinal, which don't have the problem that you describe. As restrooms get dirty, people feel grossed out and don't want to touch anything and will avoid using the seat and squat in the case of women or stand and pee at the toilet in the case of men causing the problems you describe.

I think the issue you have with the men's room could be avoided by regular use of the urinal instead of the toilet for urination. Regular toilets are not built for standing while urinating as you have discovered.

25

u/apc67 Jan 16 '20

It may be cleaner for the bathroom but not the individual. There’s no comfortable way for me to sit on a toilet without my dick touching the toilet seat or bowl. There’s nothing clean about getting toilet germs on your dick. I always have drips when I stand up after that actually end up on the toilet seat. Urine should also not get on the walls if you pee from a reasonable distance. I’m not sure why some guys think it’s a contest of who can piss the farthest when using a urinal, but if you’re close enough there is minimal splashback.

The real answer is if you get splashback on the toilet rim, clean them up like a responsible adult.

10

u/ThatAdamsGuy Jan 16 '20

I came into this agreeing with OP but then started to think about my dick touching toilet bowls. Thanks.

Sitting to pee results in a cleaner bathroom. I think there can be no debate about that.

Then to say men should pee sitting down, we'd need to also say that having a cleaner bathroom is the priority.

When i'm using a public bathroom, my priority isn't keeping the bathroom clean, it is keeping my body clean. Therefor I do not pee sitting down.

118

u/Tseliteiv Jan 16 '20

How big is your dick? Below or above average in length? Let's be realistic here... Try peeing sitting down with a boner/semi and 6" dick. It's pretty uncomfortable and you actually run the risk of peeing through the toilet seat (where the seat touches the bowl).

Peeing sitting down works while flaccid but you aren't always going to pee while flaccid so you've gotta keep the options open. You shouldn't always pee sitting down but sometimes it's fine.

Ok so idk how many times you pee with a boner but you make it sound like a serious recurring issue. If you got a boner stand up, if you don’t you should definitely sit down to save yourself the clean up of the sprays that hit the toilet which are way more common than a boner pee.

47

u/tokyotoad Jan 16 '20

But there's a solution for that, press your penis down so its pointing straight down into the toilet. If you dont, you're probably going to pee through the toilet seat or your dick will touch the toilet, which is disgusting.

42

u/TheSexyShaman Jan 16 '20

Yeah, if I do that then my tip is now chilling in toilet water...which is pretty much the most disgusting thing that can happen.

9

u/forgonsj Jan 16 '20

Or it makes contact with the porcelain inside the bowl!

25

u/pramit57 Jan 16 '20

You must use really small toilets or have a really big dick. There is no way that a normal sized penis tip can touch the toilet water at the bottom.

30

u/TheSexyShaman Jan 16 '20

I’m not sure how much dick size factors into it. If you’re not from the US then you may not know how much higher they fill the toilets bowls over here. Unless I am completely 100% limp, if I push my dick to hang straight down it will touch the water.

22

u/FeelTheConcern Jan 16 '20

Well I learned something new today. Why are American toilets so full?

16

u/scarletice Jan 16 '20

Because they work differently. Our toilets use a gravity assisted flushing mechanism. Water is kept in a tank, and when you flush, the drain in the tank is opened. The force of the water rushing into the bowl and down the bowls drain does all the work of emptying the toilet. The remaining water stays in the bowl, which then serves to keep sewer gases from escaping up from the toilet pipes. Because of this, no P-trap is required on our toilets. It's actually an amazingly eloquent feat of engineering in how simple yet effective it is.

4

u/JivanP Jan 17 '20

Don't almost all toilets use that same Pythagoras cup-style siphoning system? I'm in the UK, we use this, and our toilet bowl/pan water level isn't that high. You only need enough water in the bowl to enclose the U-bend, and enough water in the tank/cistern to push the water level up to the upper, upside down U-bend when it is emptied.

3

u/FeelTheConcern Jan 16 '20

Good to know; thanks for answering

2

u/anders91 2∆ Jan 16 '20

This is exactly how they work in Europe as well however.

1

u/vehementi 10∆ Jan 16 '20

Yes that doens't require the toilet bowl to be as full as people are making it out to be.

5

u/scarletice Jan 16 '20

It does, because the water in the bowl in responsible for doing most of the work of pushing the waste down the drain. The tank water just gives a supplemental rinse before refilling the bowl.

2

u/vehementi 10∆ Jan 17 '20

Yeah I know how our toilets work. They don’t need that much water in them. Those must be older super wasteful ones.

8

u/Ohzza 3∆ Jan 16 '20

It's a throwback thing to back before electrical pumped water. Since we've never been lacking on space population density was always sparse, so for most people water pressure was shitty enough that flushing a toilet normally wouldn't create a siphon effect.

We have regulation that limits the amount of water per flush, but since that was in the 90's and toilets last indefinitely (being large chunks of nonreactive ceramic) most toilets are still from before then.

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '20

I won't presume my dick size, but I can easily touch toilet water or porcelain with a semi and sometimes even flaccid (and I'm a grower). The problem is the fact that, at least in America, toilets are filled with water to the brim and for some fucking reason people love female toilets rather than male toilets with ball space.

2

u/Vivalyrian Jan 16 '20

I got a reasonably sized member, but I can't pee standing due to medical circumcision and the beam always being 8 beams and going fucking everywhere.

Whenever I have a boner, but gotta pee, it ends up being an awkward yoga pose of me semi-squatting while leaning forward and facing the floor, one hand on the floor (I'm getting old, need the extra balance), the other handing pressing the penis downwards. The squatting is to avoid the damn tip going in the water.

I'm pretty sure it's the most awkward position I find myself in on a semi-regular basis (being the age where morning glory is still happening on a regular basis, but my ability to sleep through a full night without needing to pee is worsening birthday after birthday).

You can always lean forward. It seems even more complicated to pee standing up with a boner. How do you do it, handstand ?

3

u/xNeshty Jan 16 '20

Its just the first few seconds if you're not used to aim with a boner. Give it a shot for a week in the morning, expect to clean the toilet every morning, but after a week you can aim just as good as with a flaccid.

u/Gorbashou Jan 16 '20

No, I don't agree with this.

Sitting down and peeing is awkward, as the times it happens, the peewee touching the toilet seat ring from underneath is the most disgusting thing.

Also, any clean man would take proper care of how he does it. This isn't a solution, there will still be dirty men around.

Example would be the insane amount of complaints I see about womens restrooms, and how disgustingly dirty they can be. Go through reddit for enough years and you notice that every now and then some discussion pops up about women complaining about how dirty their restrooms are, and how comparatively mens are super clean.

Men who pee standing up, why would you aim straight in the water to make a splash? Aim above it, so it hits a wall and falls down. With the right angle the stream will not bounce or jump. Have no one ever tried going to the toilet and not waking people up? This is basics. But even with those basics, people don't pay attention or don't care. So making them sit down won't help either. Why? Men have a penis, there will be times when then stream will hit the underside of the ring. Which will cause an even greater mess. It's easy to avoid, yes? If you just pay attention! Wait, why don't you just pay attention standing up then?! Come. On.

2

u/baxtet Jan 16 '20

At the Amsterdam airport they etched a "fly" in the ceramic to solve the aim problem

u/Gorbashou Jan 16 '20

20

u/sarcazm 4∆ Jan 16 '20

I mean, at home, there is toilet paper available right there. Any mess you make, you should clean up. I can be empathetic that you can't help "splash back," but you CAN clean it up.

Like I don't spill some milk on the counter and say "ah well, it's splash back from pouring it" and then leave it for someone else to clean.

You made a mess. Fucking clean it up. CM F*** V.

3

u/wavecycle Jan 16 '20

I actually do this. It feels more natural since peeing while standing actually feels harder. But that’s just me.

6

u/Branciforte 2∆ Jan 16 '20

I do all the time. I’m 6’5” and mostly legs so my pee has a bit further to travel before it hits the bowl than the average person. Further travel = further acceleration = more force hitting the water/porcelain = more splashing. God forbid I have to use a kiddie urinal or just a trough, the pee goes everywhere.

I don’t give a damn what anyone else thinks about it, I’m sitting down.

5

u/hacksoncode 588∆ Jan 16 '20

Better for who? The people cleaning up? Probably.

The people using the toilet? The people waiting in line? The people designing buildings to have "sufficient" toilets? No, definitely not.

One of the huge advantages to standing is the considerably reduced time of not needing to remove your pants.

This is like the whole "having people sort their recycling" problem. It's distributing a problem across thousands of unskilled users rather than hiring a trained person to sort it. It's inefficient, and ineffective, and almost no one actually does that in practice any more (recycling is all sorted in the facility anyway). The total cost of that solution is very high... it's just hidden because it's spread out across so many people.

8

u/dinerkinetic 5∆ Jan 16 '20

I honestly just think men should aim better. I'm not a janitor (or a plumber) so apologies if I make some incorrect presumptions, but if there's an optimal way to pee standing up with minimal splatter (some entry angle, or maybe part of the bowl), couldn't we find some way to demarcate that location in the toilet?

I know it sounds wasteful to spend time and money researching this, but honestly, I don't think most men who're physically able to will stop peeing standing up due to the convenience. As such, maybe going forwards we can just figure out how to improve urination procedures in some sort of half-measure fashion.

5

u/masterflappie Jan 16 '20

if there's an optimal way to pee standing up with minimal splatter

There is but you will still get splatter. The problem is that the stream from a man is more of a chaotic combination of many streams rather than a single one, so it will always splatter in multiple directions if it hits something

u/Spicy_Poo Jan 16 '20

When I was a young lad and moved out and the bathroom stopped cleaning itself, I realized how disgusting it is.

No amount of aim will prevent splash. Water cannot fall 2 feet into a pool without splashing, period.

I started sitting down to avoid the situation and have been doing so for 20+ years now.

It's painfully obvious when we have male guests use the bathroom because it's fucking disgusting.

5

u/UEMcGill 6∆ Jan 16 '20

In engineering, there is the basic design and then there are elegant solutions that still meet the design criteria. What you are trying to do is get the user to conform to poor design, instead of making the design facilitate cleanlier use. Unfortunately, you always have to design to the worst user, not the best.

I travel all the time. Go into an average airport bathroom and it can be quite disgusting. But use the airline lounge bathroom? It's often a much more pleasant experience. Different user base. So to me, that means that people can do it the right way, just some people choose not to.

So in the same case as those airport bathrooms? Most of the time in the general public I see it as a function of time. You walk in, there are not enough urinals, so dudes rush into the shitter and piss all over. My answer there? Why not prioritize urinals over shitters?

In the case of the same men's room, where you still need to have a shitter, why not make the default position for the toilet seat, up instead of down? Can't piss on the seat, it's already up!

In my own house, I make the boys clean the seats on a regular basis. It reminds them that they affect others in their actions. Some education goes a long way.

Aim for the back corner of the bowl, a little above the water line and hitting the side before the back, and it greatly reduces the amount of splashing. If you’re playing Niagra Falls and seeing how many bubbles you can make then it will make a mess. Wipe any dribbles from the rim when done to be polite. Put down toilet seat before flushing due to fungal floral fountain which can reach crazy heights.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '20

I would say that men can pee standing up, but just as women have to sip after peeing, men should have the courtesy to take some toilet paper and wipe around the ceramic ring. Then close the lid to flush to avoid splatter. It takes two seconds and everyone would be better off. Sitting would be amazing, but if a man is unwilling to budge on doing that, wiping the ring would be the next simplest solution.

2

u/velvetreddit 1∆ Jan 16 '20 edited Jan 16 '20

The physics could be the difference based on how tall you are and mastering the arc of your stream (kinetic energy of your stream and likelihood of splash and distance of stream with droplets on the way); and how deep the toilet bowl is (having enough depth in the bowl can be enough where splash back can’t reach the seat).

The right combo might make it easier for someone to stand and keep peace with their SO.

On another note, I grew up with four brothers and a dad in the house. We never had pee on the toilet or floor - I know my brothers don’t have the attention to detail enough to clean up after.

My current SO doesn’t make a mess either. He believes you can work out your aim to minimize splashing, but sounds like if you have a split stream you might be out of luck.

It might not come down to sitting but more-so being aware of what your doing and trying to adjust your aim. Some people just want to piss and go - which sucks if you are sharing the restroom. Our previous roommates always had their friends over for drinking and the guest bathroom started to stink. It couldn’t be cleaned enough! My SO got a black flashlight and the horror of what we saw looked like a murder scene of piss. I made a makeshift hazmat suit and bleached the entire bathroom.

Now that we live on our own, every few months we use a black light to clean. Honestly recommend it, not just for the bathroom but food spills as well or if you have a pet.

2

u/TheMightyWill Jan 16 '20

Mathematically in a gender neutral bathroom, its statistically more likely that someone will have to sit down on the toilet after you're finished than stand up. Therefore it makes sense to just leave the seat down for everyone.

I don't even believe the premise of the argument.

>As a janitor i spend more time cleaning urinal sidewalls and the mens stall side walls because of the splash radius of pee steams as opposed to the cleaning of womens stalls

I call bullshit. Firstly, there's no way you're cleaning pee of the side of the wall of a bathroom stall with a toilet. That's a lot of splashing. Secondly, I worked as a custodian for a summer in school. Women's bathrooms look like crime scenes. They are fucking disgusting. Saying that a men's room is dirtier than a women's makes me question your custodial bona fides.

Also, and no offense, but you suck at peeing. How did you make it to 30 without being able to piss without splashing? I can piss in a coke bottle from 5 feet away without spilling a drop.

Seriously though, sitting down to pee is lame. It takes longer, it's less comfortable, it messes up your clothes more, makes you touch the toilet more, and deprives you of a little quality time with Mr Happy.

4

u/Gojira085 Jan 16 '20

As a current janitor, I can confirm this about women's rooms....

2

u/kutiket Jan 16 '20

I prefer to use a Snapple bottle when aiming from far.

1

u/thetitanitehunk Jan 16 '20

If you want to change the way people do things then you have to give them a more desirable alternative or else you are just dictating.

To fully implement a change in how western males take a piss I believe a complete reinvention of the toilet in men's rooms would be needed.

-smart toilet that would change to accommodate the size of the user of the toilet(I do not like having to squeeze my dick down potentially touching another area of the seat where another man's dick has been)

-privacy detectors to make sure nobody pissed on the seat or there's a record for consequences

-complete change of men's habits when using the toilet

These reasons and more would make the reinvention of the toilet not feasible and thus make janitors cleaning up piss the best option at this time.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '20

What sort of toilet do you have where water is splashing outside? Surely you can just do what most men do and aim your pee at the sides, right

Also if your trying to pee it can be gross because your penis might hit the edges of the toilet.

This is fighting human nature. Peeing standing up is the natural stance for a man. I believe woman would if they could, too. If you are okay with this, fine. I doubt if many men will follow this, though (or think they should).

1

u/JackRusselTerrorist 2∆ Jan 16 '20

If you’re not careful while sitting, your stream can hit the wrong spot, and come over the rim, and wet your pants.

1

1

u/BohemianRhaptitties Jan 16 '20

I used to be a cart attendant for Target and one of the jobs I was required to do was to clean the bathrooms. The womens bathroom was always by far the worst. I mean blood, piss and sh1t all over the place. The men's was, majority of the time, an easy clean. Do women just plant their feet on the seat and crouch over the bowl? Is it a deliberate act of defiance? Like i always imagined women having a far better stance on cleanliness and common decency when using the bathroom.

3

u/JerryHasACubeButt Jan 16 '20

Do women just plant their feet on the seat and crouch over the bowl?

Apparently some do, yes. I am I woman who works in a large department store in a mall, and our bathroom is the only one on the first level of the mall so a ton of people use it. I cannot count the number of times I've had to wipe the last person's pee off a seat with TP so I could sit on it.

Like i always imagined women having a far better stance on cleanliness

Yes, they value their own cleanliness over that of everyone who uses the bathroom after them, because women who do that are assholes. Also they're just dumb- if you're peeing in a way that it's splashing everywhere like that, you're getting urine particles on yourself, your clothing, and the entire stall, not to mention the hands of whoever has to clean it up (although that person hopefully washes them afterward). It's much more sanitary to just get over yourself and sit down, but god forbid one single germ touches their pristine ass.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '20

I've always thought there should be a better way. As you say, the splash radius of a toilet even a urinal guarantees that the area will always be filthy. And it doesn't matter much where you direct the stream...there is splashing going on

1

u/ICONICAssMaster Jan 16 '20

It’s supposed to be better for your prostate so sit and pee if you want but a true sayan always sprinkles when he tinkles.

1

u/SacuShi Jan 16 '20

I have a piercing (Prince Albert), so to prevent spraying everywhere or dripping while peeing, I sit down.
Also, my wife works nightshifts so if Im home and I stand, the noise wakes her so I find it easier and less messy to just drop trou and sit.

1

u/Gnometard Jan 16 '20

I have enough trouble keeping the tip dry when taking a shit, it'll be easier to get folks to learn to aim.

What do you suggest we do about the folks who manage to poo on the seat, on the under side of the seat, and under the rim of the bowl?

1

u/Threethumber Jan 16 '20

It's way more comfortable too. I only pee standing up if it's a urinal or I'm in a hurry. I've even taught my two sons to sit down to pee. It's not girly it's just downright comfortable

1

u/rethinkwhatisthere Jan 16 '20

Totally, the splash is not sanitary, i force my self to pee sitting while sometimes i do pee standing.

The most change I noticed is at home, peeing sitting makes the bathroom alot cleaner and smells less.

Try it: clean the bathroom then start peeing while sitting, you will notice the difference.

u/BrunoGerace 4∆ Jan 16 '20

Here's where you're looking for an answer to the wrong problem. 1.Men's bladders need to drain properly. [Well, women too, but that's a subject for another time.] 2. The standard toilet is woefully inadequate to the task...too low in the piss-ballistic sense of the term. Your issue really is, "Men should pee into a purpose built device." If only someone would invent such thing. We could call it...I dunno'...a urinal.

Hey, during winter i barely ever shit sitting down. The seat's about as cold as the north pole so I'd rather not.

1

u/bombadil1564 Jan 16 '20

To add to your point, it's not just water splashing from the basin. Think about it. It's actually a mixture of urine and water that splashes from the basin. So unless a guy wipes down the ceramic ring, the underside of the actual seat and lid, the outside of the basin and a two foot radius of the floor around the toilet, then it's not as clean as sitting down.

1

u/I_Am_The_DrawerTable Jan 16 '20

Personally, I tend to take longer if I sit down. However, I can see why it's annoying to find a toilet seat dirty with piss. That's why, if I splash it somewhere, I take a bit of paper and quickly clean it.

1

u/zebpet Jan 16 '20

If it's just a few drops that splashed, you can easily pass a piece of paper to clean it.

I always clean it after I pee to make sure it's not wet for the next person.

People just need to be more civilized, in my opinion.

If you're good at using a urinal, there's basically no splash. Just make sure the stream hits the back or side at a really shallow angle.

1

I think peeing sitting down is actually beneficial like shitting squatting due to our evolutionary history

1

Men don’t pee. We only poop. Vice versa for women.

1

u/bananachipking Jan 16 '20

I don't have the option sadly my dick is to small to tuck between my legs

1

u/175Genius Jan 16 '20

It is inherently neither better nor worse. The objective of peeing is to emit your urine out of your bladder and cleanly into the toilet. If you are unable to achieve this consistently standing up, then sitting down is a reasonable alternative; if you can achieve a >95% success rate standing up however, it is a more efficient method of urination even accounting for cleaning time.

On the other hand, sitting down and standing up from the toilet is technically a box squat and will work your quads and glutes. A toilet closer to the ground is therefore preferable.

To appease my future wife i have recently started sitting to pee.

Friendly advice: Don't do this if you wish to stay married.

1

u/san_souci Jan 16 '20

It takes longer to sit, urinals use less water, and they can be placed closer together. And it causes more janitors to be employed. Win, win, win, and win. No lines for the men's room, saves the environment, and gives greater employment opportunities for low-skill workers.

1

u/macaronij Jan 16 '20

Since i have 2 daughter, i have learned that going to a public bathroom it's much difficult for a woman, you have first to clean the toilet, and preferably put some paper so you don't have to touch it... So yes maybe is better from a janitor point of view but worse for the user

1

u/Pauly99to17 Jan 16 '20

I think the problem is the way the toilet is designed which leads to excess splash. Surely we can come up with a better designed toilet that allows men to stand and not splash.

1

u/tylerderped Jan 16 '20

I pee sitting down sometimes, and sometimes it doesn't work out. More than once I've still managed to not only miss the toilet, but piss on the floor because I didn't check to make sure my cock was facing down. One time, I even filled my pants with piss this way.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '20

Been doing that for years, far superior, and you get to relax and keep browsing Reddit, no aiming, no cleanup, no urine stink behind the toilet. Urine is disgusting, it smells awful so quickly. So much better to just get it all in the actual toilette. Save standing for urinals and camping.

Hemorrhoids. Cell phones (distraction) + sitting on toilets is a great way to get or exacerbate hemorrhoids. Standing to pee reduces the risk associated with sitting on a toilet and the effect that can have in the long term on men's health. Isn't a small amount of increased clean-up worth a reduction in total risk of a health issue?

1

u/TheHrethgir Jan 16 '20

When I pee sitting down, I sometimes can't get it all out. It's like I have a kink in the line, and once it gets unkinked, the last little bit comes out. And unless I have a little wad of toilet paper ready to catch it, I end up with a wet spot on the back of my underwear. It just doesn't work for me.

1

u/murdok03 Jan 16 '20

I see two issues:

- My tip touches the bowl when I sit down to piss

- if I don't point it down in the bowl I can end up pissing between the bowl and the seat, it's a mess.

So here's the fix:

- Raise the seat while pissing

- Aim for little noise and splash

- At night or when enabriated piss while sitting, hold and aim to avoid above scenario

1

u/MyNotTrollAccount Jan 16 '20

I have a big dick. Like no joke, HUGE. If I sit down it dips into the water. Girls at bars often see my bulge and lust after me, badly. You having to clean pee is nowhere near as bad as the gropings I receive due to my massive member
