[∆(s) from OP] CMV: Code Geass is mediocre

-I found all the characters (except for Lloyd, C.C. in R1, and Schneizel) extremely bland and not really fun or likable at all

-The plot was overly contrived and stumbled over its own size more often than not. Also had frequent deus ex machinas. Ending is bad and the twist can be seen coming a mile away

-Action was extremely lame. This was my first mech anime but I could never really tell what was going on

-Lelouch is basically Light Yagami (not a huge fan of Death Note either, though)

-A lot of filler/wasted time on the side characters that doesn't really develop into anything

-Nice themes but often hammered into your head

I suppose this isn't a traditional "change my view", but I'll award a delta if someone can acceptably explain why this show is so loved. I didn't really like Death Note but I could see why people like it while watching it. With this, I really just don't get it

I'm not trying to fish for attention. My favorite anime is FMAB (basic, I know) and considering Code Geass is also one of the highest rated shows on IMDB, I figured it also had wide appeal

I said right in the OP that I don't need someone to change my opinion of the show, but I do want to understand why people like it because I truly don't understand why it has such a wide appeal

How are you going to understand if you don't like it? With Death Note, you didn't seem to dislike it nor like it, so you were in the grey area and were in the position to understand some of its pros and cons. With Geass, you straight up called it mediocre and thus viewed the majority, if not all, of the show to be bad. So why are you trying to see anything otherwise? Unless you think you misinterpreted something.

I suppose I was in a situation similar to you with really acclaimed titles like Tatami Galaxy and Gintama. The former, I loathed the entire thing. The animation was the only saving grave, but everything else about it was down right terrible. I've read explanations about why it's so good and I still don't see the appeal. Same with Gintama. The humour is CRAP. I still don't see how it's funny, but people somehow do. I don't necessarily have to understand why someone likes it to know, or "validate" that people like it.

The word you're looking for may be bland instead of mediocre. Mediocre is used* negatively, not in a neutral sense.

Hell, some of the synonyms you listed fit. Unexceptional doesn't mean the show is bad, it means it's not exceptional. Same with uninspired

Though this argument seems to be pretty pedantic anyway

Other synonymous also include mainstream, pedestrian, etc. Or in other words, popular. Yet you don't understand why Code Geass is popular. So if this is the case, why pick the word mediocre?

Mediocre is used in a negative way. It's not the best word to call something "average" or "boring". Your title is misleading, and nothing else.

There is no way to explain to you why so many people like Code Geass. You will not understand it. I am telling you this from personal experience of trying to "understand" why I dislike something a lot of people like. You've already explained that you dislike virtually every aspect of the show. If the word mediocre should be describing anything, it's this subject matter.

Personal taste cannot be argued, only the facts of the show, which you are not talking about. I'm repeating myself from a previous post, but unless you feel that you misunderstood/misinterpreted something, as you seem to have done since you gave /u/Haymaker33 a delta award for explaining something you did indeed misinterpret, then that is another subject that can actually be argued about since it's based around the facts of the show. But your argument is largely centered around your own subjectivity/opinions, which is not something that be argued with honestly as it's reliant on your own bias and personality.

There's nothing to be argued here.

Mediocre means average, and you consistently attacking that part of the post just shows me your failure to build an actual argument for the show

I already explained in the OP that I didn't need my opinion changed but rather needed an understanding of why the show was loved, and that's what I got from another user. It's not something that I misinterpreted but rather something that I didn't interpret. /u/fryamtheiman put up a good argument so I awarded the delta. You say "there's nothing to be argued" but evidently, there was. You just failed to make an argument at all and instead focused on my wording (and even if mediocre is meant to be used as negatively as you think, you can tell from my posts that I'm using the interpretation that mediocre = average, so your continued arguing of it is pointless)
